Hang it around their necks: McCain camp was pushing Ashley Todd story

When John Cole asked this question yesterday:

Am I wrong? Did I miss the McCain team pushing this story? Because I do not remember anything from them on it.

I reported in his comments (hung up in his pesky spam filter—damn you, Balloon Juice!)  that in early reports on the Ashley Todd hoax I had seen a clear indication that the McCain camp had been pushing the story, but it looked like the original online articles I had seen had been rewritten (I went through my Firefox history to make sure).  Well, via BJ, I see that Talking Points Memo dug up exactly what I was looking for:

John McCain’s Pennsylvania communications director told reporters in the state an incendiary version of the hoax story about the attack on a McCain volunteer well before the facts of the case were known or established—and even told reporters outright that the “B” carved into the victim’s cheek stood for “Barack,” according to multiple sources familiar with the discussions.

And this is the excised text I had read early in the evening on Thursday:

Ashley Todd -- McCain

Everyone repeat along with me ... hang it around their necks.

SIDE NOTE: I’m taking a pass on feeling sorry for Ashley Todd due to her alleged history of mental illness because from what I can tell that info came solely from Ashley Todd, who lied horribly about more things than I can count over the last few days. This could just be a contemptible racist asshole’s attempt to court the sympathy vote and take off some of the heat (the media seems to be buying it), so count this skeptic out for the moment.

UPDATE: The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has a lot more on this story…

The “B” stood for “Bullshit”: McCain-Palin volunteer Ashley Todd admits she made up the attack story

From KDKA in Pittsburgh:

A Pittsburgh police commander says a volunteer for the McCain campaign who reported being robbed and attacked near a bank ATM in Bloomfield has confessed to making up the story. Police say charges will be filed. More details to follow.

Hang it around their necks. [via Wonkette]

UPDATE: KDKA has posted a story after their initial bulletin.

UDPATE: Now Pittsburgh’s WPXI is also reporting that she made it up.

UPDATE: Press conference!

Police have called a press conference this afternoon and are expected to say that the inconsistencies in the story of a McCain campaign volunteer who told them she was mugged by a man who cut a “B” on her cheek when he saw a McCain sticker on her car have led them to believe it is a hoax.

UPDATE: Looks like she did etch the “B” on her cheek while looking in a mirror...

Ashley Todd, 20, of College Station, Texas, is expected to be charged with filing a false police report and may face additional charges, investigators said. She told detectives she etched a backward letter “B” onto her right cheek and then manufactured a story about being attacked at a Bloomfield ATM by a black man who was enranged by her John McCain bumper sticker.

MORE: Here is a copy of the first police update (PDF file).

MORE: Face O’ Spuds is outraged, I tell ya ... outraged!

Assuming this is true—which I do—she really screwed us nicely. She put people like me in a difficult spot as I was forced to defend her on the small chance she was on the level.

Disgrace in spades!

I gotta tell ya, I’ve never done a political hoax myself but I have to think I’d be a little bit smarter about it than this Krazy Kretinous Kow.

That’s fucking precious coming from the guy who wrote this post.

But, can’t argue with this…

It’s not just that she’s corrupt and crazy. I mean—obviously.

It’s also that she’s not even minimally competent at it.

The Republican Party is supposed to be Evil. Not “incompetent.”

Exactly. The GOP has been corrupt, crazy and evil for a long time now, but this year you’re incompetent, too. And that’s why November 4th is going to be one of the best days ever.

You just can’t “makeup” this stuff…

From The New York Times:

Who was the highest paid individual in Senator John McCain’s presidential campaign during the first half of October as it headed down the homestretch?

Not Randy Scheunemann, Mr. McCain’s chief foreign policy adviser; not Nicolle Wallace, his senior communications staffer. It was Amy Strozzi, who was identified by the Washington Post this week as Gov. Sarah Palin’s traveling makeup artist, according to a new filing with the Federal Election Commission on Thursday night.

Ms. Strozzi, who was nominated for an Emmy award for her makeup work on the television show “So You Think You Can Dance?”, was paid $22,800 for the first two weeks of October alone, according to the records. The campaign categorized Ms. Strozzi’s payment as “Personnel Svc/Equipment.”

Regarding Ashley Todd, I’ve got two words for you…

Francisco ... Nava. (sniff, sniff) Smell test results coming soon…

UPDATE: I had to run out after posting this, but now that I’ve had more time to review the allegations and the this-is-what’s-gonna-happen-next Twittering, the smell test gets a D+. And I think I’m being generous. Even Pajamas Media and Michelle Malkin (no linky for the stinky) think this might be a hoax. From PJM:

A reader who says he’s a plastic surgeon writes that he believes the attack is superficial and may be a hoax. Chillingly, he closes with this line which I’m paraphrasing: “This may be a Tawana Brawley moment for Republicans.”

MORE: From the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review...

Police planned to administer a polygraph test to Ashley Todd, 20, because her statements about the attack conflict with evidence from the Citizens Bank ATM where she claims the incident occurred, police said.

UPDATE (10/24 9:30AM): A police representative was on MSNBC a short while ago and while she didn’t come right out and say it (she did use the word “inconsistencies” a lot), it was fairly obvious that Ashley Todd failed the polygraph test.

SIDE NOTE: I’ve been one of the few Obama supporters I know who hasn’t been nervous once (I swear, ask my wife) about his chances since our convention, but when I first heard about this story I became worried. Really worried. It fit tightly (and, as it turns out, too tightly) into the “Fear of a Black Country” narrative I’ve seen unfurled in the comment sections (and sometimes the posts) at wingnut and PUMA blogs over the last several weeks.  The storyline goes that a) African Americans will riot in the streets for days if Obama loses the election or b) that large packs of swarthy black thugs will roam he United States as Barack’s enforcers if he wins. Inevitably, someone or several people mention how they’re going to go out and buy a gun. If this story turned out to be true, in my opinion, it would have done severe damage to Obama’s campaign and from one early report I read before running up the “Francisco Nava” portion of this post, the McCain campaign was acutely aware of that and were actively pushing this story (I read that it was a campaign spokesperson who initially told the press that the “B” stood for “Barack”). John McCain called Ashley.  Sarah Palin called her, too. They were latching onto this story bigtime and were fully prepared to ride it for all it was worth. From what I’ve seen this morning, a lot of liberal blogs are still holding this story at arm’s length or not touching it at all, but I think it’s important that we clearly and loudly identify this as the HOAX that it appears to be and hang it around McCain and Palin’s necks because this story has already seeped into America’s feeding tube and it’s imperative that we yank it out of its throat hole before Twitter Brawley can do anymore damage than she’s already done.

UPDATE: Here’s a good post from a PA (Pittsburgh?) resident about the incident [via the comments at Instaputz].  Most interesting is this “UPDATE”:

Apparently local talk radio host Marty Griffin (KDKA 1020) isn’t buying it either. He’s reporting that Ms. Todd called the McCain campaign office before reporting this incident to the police.

Hang it around their necks.

UPDATE: New details from WPXI in Pittsburgh. She’s changed her story and the national chairman of the College Republican National Committee is going all in (much like someone else we know):

The College Republican National Committee confirms that before the attack, Todd had just finished a campaign assignment at the University of Pittsburgh.

The group’s national chairman, Charlie Smith, told Channel 11 News the alleged victim is taking time off to recover from what he views as a political hate crime.

“It’s really too bad that someone, anyone, would have to go through this type of intimidation and abuse when she’s just trying to be more politically active and more active in our democratic process,” said Smith.

Gawker has a lot more. And, as Betty Cracker points out in the comments, the Executive Vice President of FOX News blurted out the following on his blog:

If Ms. Todd’s allegations are proven accurate, some voters may revisit their support for Senator Obama, not because they are racists (with due respect to Rep. John Murtha), but because they suddenly feel they do not know enough about the Democratic nominee.

If the incident turns out to be a hoax, Senator McCain’s quest for the presidency is over, forever linked to race-baiting.

Pre-Halloween Open Thread

I’ve got a bunch of nonsense to plow through today, so feel free to drop any interesting links in the comment section. I’d also be interested to hear what some of you are dressing up as for Halloween (if at all).  I’ve begrudgingly participated in the ritual throughout the years, skipping a year or two in between.  Here are a few of my past “costumes”:

  • Cokie Roberts: Made a mask by blowing up a headshot and adhering it to cardboard, but unfortunately had to cut our her most recognizable feature: her eyes. Left it at a Ukrainian bar on the Lower East Side and after returning there a year or so later, found out they had hung it over the bar and were occasionally offering Cokie Roberts drink specials.
  • Destiny’s Child: Same deal as above, but I glued three lifesize heads to cardboard this time and supported it with a basic plastic mask (with assistance from my super crafty wife Chris). Beyonce was in the middle, so she suffered the eye pokin’.
  • “Left Eye” Lisa: I needed a quick costume, so I just stuck a piece of black electrical tape under my left eye. Ta-da! Man, you shoulda heard me belt out “Waterfalls” over and over that night.  It was really something.
  • Richard Reid (aka “The Shoe Bomber”): I put on a fake nose and wore a long-hair wig, but I spent the whole night pointing at the singed wick hanging out of my shoe because everyone thought I was Howard Stern.

After a couple of years off, I’m thinking of dressing up again this year and currently Nancy Pfotenhauer is in the lead (I must have been drag queen in a former life).  And, yes, if I run with that, the eye holes will go in her neck.

MORE: I’m in full agreement with this rule.

EPIC PFAIL! Hardball’s Chris Matthews destroys McCain campaign’s Nancy Pfotenhauer over Sarah Palin

Tonight on MSNBC’s Hardball, Chris Matthews totally destroyed McCain senior policy advisor Nancy Pfotenhauer over Sarah Palin’s failure to understand the role of the vice president. Obama spokesperson Bill Burton took part as well, but mostly just kicked back and enjoyed the bloodbath.

Dear Alien Abductors:

When the election is over, kindly do not return columnist Kathleen Parker:

“Palling around with terrorists,” as Sarah Palin said of Obama, gets to an underlying xenophobic, anti-Muslim sentiment. Using surrogates who strategically use Obama’s middle name, Hussein, feeds the same dark heart.

This tactic, denied but undeniable, has been effective with target audiences, some of whom can be viewed on YouTube entering a Palin rally in Pennsylvania. One cherubic older fellow totes a stuffed Curious George monkey wearing an Obama sticker as a hat…

To McCain’s credit, he has tried to correct his audience—when, for example, a woman said she couldn’t trust Obama because he’s an Arab. Gosh, wonder where she ever got that idea? But the McCain-Palin bad cop-good cop routine is what it is. The hot babe lathers the crowd; the noble soldier hoses them down. This isn’t a campaign; it’s a sideshow.

We prefer the alien pod-person with which you replaced her.

It’s so cute when Republicans pretend that they’re feminists…

From the Las Vegas Review-Journal:

Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin cast herself as the heir to feminism’s legacy in her first visit to Southern Nevada on Tuesday, saying if Democrat Barack Obama were serious about respecting women, he would have chosen Hillary Clinton as his running mate.

“Our opponents think that they have the women’s vote all locked up, which is a little presumptuous, since only our side has a woman on the ticket,” Palin said.

“When the time came to make a decision, somehow Barack Obama just couldn’t bring himself to pick the woman who got 18 million votes,” she added. [...]

“For the women in this audience and across the country, are you ready to break the highest, hardest glass ceiling in America?” the Alaska governor shouted to thunderous cheers during her 25-minute speech.

Of course, thanks to Palin being on the ticket, Republicans have developed a keen new respect for women, right?

Cost to accessorize Caribou Barbie: $150,000

Laughs we’re going to have over John Edward’s $400 haircut from here on out: PRICELESS

The Republican National Committee appears to have spent more than $150,000 to clothe and accessorize vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin and her family since her surprise pick by John McCain in late August.

According to financial disclosure records, the accessorizing began in early September and included bills from Saks Fifth Avenue in St. Louis and New York for a combined $49,425.74.

The records also document a couple of big-time shopping trips to Neiman Marcus in Minneapolis, including one $75,062.63 spree in early September.

The RNC also spent $4,716.49 on hair and makeup through September after reporting no such costs in August.
