Bob Barr: Census Is In Yr Drawers, Countin Yr Thingummys!

WackyBarr

Bob Barr, after rebirth as an emBarrassing Libertarian Wackaloon, is afraid the all-powerful Census, now that it has the backing of the Law as he understands it, will be breaking and entering his sacred home to rifle through his underthings! Don’t fret, Bob. We only want to know how better to accommodate you during your stay in the Alinsky Cabin at Camp FEMACORN anyway.

Senator Vitter spanks Gulf Coast oil containment efforts

image

From Lowry’s unpublished personal notes:

Addressing the shortage of booms, Senator Vitter had a novel suggestion, proposing creation of miles of homemade booms made out of LUVS diapers and clotheslines.

“LUVS have exceptional oil-absorbing properties,” noted the Senator. “I don’t know why they haven’t thought of this. It’s perfectly obvious.”

That’s just crazy enough to work.

Excuse me while I relitigate the primaries…

...but, c’mon, it’s pretty funny that Bill Clinton was the one asking Joe Sestak to drop out. The only thing that would have been better was if they waited until the 31st (hint, hint) to release the info.

Surprise! “Energy Expert” Palin Has No Idea How to Handle the Deepwater Spill

Sift through Sarah’s latest 1,340-word emission with a fine-powder screen and a jeweler’s loupe, and you’ll find a shitload of opportunistic finger-pointing, winky misdirection and mendacious résumé-fluffing—but not a single, practical, actionable suggestion regarding how to deal with the busted BOP, ameliorate the spreading oil slick or protect the Gulf Coast, its fragile ecosystem and the livelihoods of the Americans who depend on it.

If this pretentious political ankle-biter has any specific technical, strategic or regulatory recommendations that might minimize the impact of the Deepwater Horizon event and avert future drilling catastrophes, the world is all ears. Till then, she’s just a failed journalism major who’s trying to monetize her wholly-serendipitous Big Break. C’mon, Sarah—prove to me you’re not the Lindsay Lohan of accidental political celebrities. Cancel your big-ticket speaking gigs, fly down to New Orleans and show everyone how you handled the Exxon Valdez spill…which happened three years before you were elected to the Wasilla City Council.

Don’t hurry. I’ll just be here. Whenever you get done milking the outrage of your book-buying, Fox-watching fan-base will be fine. Take your time.

PS: Plug your own damn hole, Ice-Genius.

Lanny Davis: Still a clueless tool

image

According to Lanny Davis, Rand Paul is a misunderstood Mr. Smith (like the one who “Goes to Washington”). And if we know what’s good for us, we’ll realize it’s just plain wrong to enjoy Rachel Maddow’s masterful takedown of Paul and the teabagger wunderkind’s subsequent national media flailing.

Know why? Because after initially enjoying Paul’s media roasting himself, Lanny Davis discovered that Paul is a sincere, principled man who is just echoing the Libertarian Party platform (even though he’s running as a Republican). How does Lanny Davis know this? Because he looked it up! On the Libertarian Party website!

…Maddow’s co-hosts at MSNBC, and Maddow herself, seemed to relish playing and replaying Paul’s humiliation just a little too much.

That’s when I decided to read the Libertarian Platform… I wanted to understand better why Rand Paul was taking what seemed to be such a politically suicidal set of positions. It explained a lot ... including about why my and my fellow liberals’ sanctimony about Mr. Paul might have been somewhat misplaced.

Under its “Statement of Principles,” the Platform states: “Since governments, when instituted, must not violate individual rights, we oppose all interference by government in the areas of voluntary and contractual relations among individuals.” Under “Property and Contract,” the platform states that “property rights are entitled to the same protection as all other human rights. The owners of property have the full right to control, use, dispose of, or in any manner enjoy, their property without interference…”

So there it is: If you believe in that principle, you wouldn’t agree with government compelling a private restaurant owner to serve anyone he or she doesn’t want to, regardless of the reasons.

Get. The. Fuck. Out!  Well, that totally excuses Paul from answering to any consequences that might flow from enacting legislation in line with that principle! Why didn’t you say so, Mr. Paul?

Buckle Up: I’m Defending Sarah Palin (and Oxford House)

This new line of attack on Sarah Palin is making me queasy:

The home Joe McGinniss is renting used to be an Oxford House from 2005 until 2008. The tenants were men recently released from prison who were recovering addicts. What? No fence to protect sexy Sarah in her tank top? Dear God! Who was lurking in that house watching her children play?

First of all, there’s no evidence that the tenants were “recently released from prison.” Check out the Oxford House site or this 60 Minutes segment about the group. Their application (.pdf file) doesn’t even ask if potential members have a criminal record nor does it state anywhere that it’s a requirement. Implying that recovering alcoholics and drug addicts who want to make better lives for themselves are dangerous, shiv-wielding criminals is just as fucking stupid as Sarah Palin implying that Joe McGinniss is a peeping tom and a pedophile. Seriously, aren’t liberals supposed to support projects like Oxford House and not paint their clients as potential threats (“there goes the neighborhood!”)? I’ve got a halfway house on my block and I’m damn proud it’s there.

And if Sarah Palin had no problem with an Oxford House moving in next door to her or even welcomed it, as this blog post from 2008 indicates (“blurb” link unfortunately dead), well, good for her (and Todd). Using that fact as a cudgel to smack her over the head regarding the McGinniss brouhaha is absurd, reckless and petty. Stop it.

Where’s Dick?

image

Given his past keenness to criticize the administration at every opportunity since leaving office, the silence from Dick Cheney—and his vociferous daughter, come to that—over the Gulf gusher and government handling of the crisis is noticeable. Surely this is a great time to cement his mooted bid for the presidency?

It’s not as if the once-de facto President has any ties nowadays to Halliburton, having divested himself when he took office, so no conflict of interest there.

His tenure was marked with farsighted steps to improve accountability and oversight in the Energy Department. The current administration may be struggling to figure out how to come to terms with the legacy of the previous one, but the man who can probably do more than most to explain what went on is curiously silent.

As we wait anxiously to learn whether the topkill has worked, hopefully then free to brace ourselves for the post mortems, lawsuits, and debates about the best strategies for mitigation and cleanup, we need a man of integrity and decisiveness with long experience and insider knowledge and contacts—a Dick, in short—to shoulder the current effete leadership aside and tell it like it is.

Step up, Dick. Your moment has come.

Repubs Totally Out Of Governing Ideas - Turn to TeaBaggers and Wonketeers for Help

No, I am not making this up.  As announced at BigGummint and even on Leader Boehner’s own personal website, the Pubs have launched America Speaking Out, a new website dedicated to letting We the People tell Repubs what their agenda should be because they can’t think of one.  Except saying “NO” and “HELL NO” a lot.  The website encourages you to pick a topic (such as Fiscal Accountability, National Security, etc.), put forth your own very special ideas as to what Republicans should do for America in this area and, TA-DA, earn badges!!

How many of you think there is reasoned, rational discussion and discourse of sensible policy and ideas going on there?  How many of you shot coffee all over your monitor at the idea?  Various commentators have cherry picked a few choice responses.  I’ve cataloged some of my own after the fold.
