18 days to go

Listen to That One:

Don’t underestimate the capacity of Democrats to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Don’t underestimate our ability to screw it up. I want everybody running scared. Over the next 18 days, other than your family and your job, I want you to make a decision that there is nothing more important than bringing about this change that we need.

He’s right. Volunteer at a phone bank. Talk to your neighbors, family and friends. If you don’t have a sign, get one. Slap a bumper sticker on your vehicle. Do whatever you can.

The GOP knows the electorate in aggregate is a beast driven alternately by fear and hate. We might be in the hope column personally, but let’s not forget that fear (about the collapsing economy, the conduct of the war, the loss of American prestige, etc.) is what’s driving the beast leftward right now.

We’re going to see an unprecedented avalanche of sleaze and lies over the next two and a half weeks; it will be an attempt to drive the beast rightward with hate. It has worked before. We can’t let it happen again.

It’ll be interesting to see what effect, if any, Colin Powell’s possible Obama endorsement on MTP Sunday will have.

I’m generally not a big believer in the power of endorsements. But that one could be big, if it happens. Mr. Powell has played coy with us before.

Colin Powell doesn’t have the cachet he used to. I lost respect for him after the role he played (or was played) leading up to the war in Iraq. He had a lot more pull before that. Now I wonder just how much his endorsement would be worth.

I think it would be worth quite a bit to many moderate, undecided independents and Republicans.  It would be a nice endorsement to get.

At this point the only thing that’s going to buy McCain and Barbie any of those My-god-how-can-they- be-so-dimwitted undecided voters, is for them to be all nice and funny and cute. McCain at that program last night and Palin, if she can possibly read from a script on SNL—the minute they start talking about issues (hey, it could happen) and hurling the slime, they go right back down again.
I don’t think there are enough “undecideds” left to change the path of this election. I don’t think Powell will have much, if any, effect but it would be nice if he found his balls—they might miss him.

Good point(s), Betty. However, ultimately, I think it’s going to be the economy that will sway voters/undecideds the most. Much as this bear market sickens me, it may be Obama’s best chance to get elected. (Bill Maher made an interesting point along these lines re racists voting for Obama when the curtain closes.)
