A Nice Night to Reminisce About My “First Time”

So this cute little ad has been making a stir of late:

Maybe it’s just me, but my first time in the voting booth ended up meaning more to me than my first trip between the sheets.  I’m probably not the only person who can say that. For one thing, I gave it more thought. For another, it was an assertion of who I was as a political person. I’d been an open, committed liberal since my mid-teens, and I had talked about my decision with my parents. They had approved of my decision—but even if they hadn’t, I’d have still gotten behind that curtain and pulled a lever for Bill Clinton.

That was my first.

Anyway, wouldn’t it be neat if one’s first time in the voting booth was as much a right of passage as losing one’s virginity? Or even more so? And that everyone kind of felt like it was the cool, adult thing to do, and paid a lot of attention to not just doing it—but making it special?  I think it would. Seems like right wingers just think the ad is kind of dirty, though:

Now, that’s just Erick, son of Erick, and he’s kind of a blunt instrument of unimpressive size, but really? One’s first time is “fallen” and “depraved”?  Because FWIW—folks have always been totally having sex and that’s how we all got here—oh wait.

You know, I could be looking at this all wrong. Maybe the coy, flirty joke of comparing voting to one’s first time having sex isn’t the real problem. (Although, heaven only knows that conservatives do seem to have a weird time recognizing that women are sexual creatures whose consent is continuously required and whose bodily autonomy should be held as sacrosanct.  )

Nope. I’m going to go out on a limb and suggest that the problem might be that women are sexual creatures whose consent is continuously required to govern and and whose right to vote should also be considered sacrosanct. (Even some conservative women seem to have a hard time with that one. )

Just saying.

Voting is one of the most important and powerful things you can do as a citizen and the ad’s message that it separates the women from the girls is totally right on.  I know all my kids felt this about the first time they voted.

The bleating, whining and pissing from the conservatards over this video just proves what a strong message it is.

I know all my kids felt this about the first time they voted.

And by the way, so did I.

Erick Son of Erick really shouldn’t speak so harshly about Bristol Palin.

Being destined for the fire means smaller heating bills.

Guess these Righteous Buckaroos are too young to remember when Saint Ronnie the Raygun made exactly the same risque double entendre . . . but then history isn’t their strong suit, eh?

I have to say that Saint Ronnie’s first time joke is also classic guy-on-guy/har-har/made-her-cry-it-was-so-big dickishness, whereas this Dunham video is the woman having all the agency in her ‘first time’.  I think that’s what’s got Eric Son of Eric shorties in a twist.

Also worth noting that in a world whose history includes such monstrous atrocities as torture, slavery, and genocide, the thing that Asshole Assholeson thinks is finally going to send us all to hell is making jokes about sex. I shudder to contemplate a mentality that’s so thoroughly devoid of anything resembling perspective.

Hypocrisy is, needless to say, rife among the wingnut blogs that have been having the vapors about this vid.

These are the same RW blogs that glory in the regular R.S. “Other” McCain clickpimping frenzy that is the “Rule 5 Sunday” softporn link exchange.

Oh my the conservatives are flipping. Me thinks they have their underwear on too tight.
