What do you expect from someone who’s a proven puppet of the old neocons?

We were treated on TV here last night to the spectacle of Israeli cabinet minister Benny Begin making this immortal response when asked if Israel would allow an independent international investigation into the flotilla killings:

Our self-investigations are always independent.

In the face of such intelligence-insulting doublethink, there’s not much scope for meaningful dialog, let alone negotiation.

And yeah, Tom. It’s always worth reminding ourselves in times like these that plenty of Israelis and non-Israeli Jews hate what’s going on as much as we do.

I wouldn’t have wanted to be judged personally by reference to the conduct of Thatcher or Blair when they were in office. Just having to live under them and feeling impotent to do anything to divert their programs was humiliating enough.

The only hope at the moment is that this does for the Israeli government what Suez did for the British. But on past form, I’m not holding my breath.

YAFB - what is the reaction of the public over there to Brits being held without charges and not being allowed to speak with lawyers or diplomats? I would have thought that they would be taking a very dim view of it.

I don’t speak to enough people to be able to give a general report, obviously.

I suspect that those who are apologists for the Israeli regime will continue in that vein—those activists on the ship were asking for it, etc. etc. I don’t see jingoism trumping that.

It’ll be interesting to see how far the new government takes it. They’re making encouraging public noises so far, but talk is cheap.

Israel, through their Ambassador to the United States, is now denying that there’s a food shortage in Gaza. So I assume there’s pretty much nothing they won’t do/say at this point.

Big double-header on Sarah’s Facebook page today. She attacks the media for creating the McGinnis imbroglio and takes a stand with Israel against America and NATO.

Tom65 inspired me to correct one graf from her post:

Anyone who sees the video of Israeli commandos being attacked as they ~~land on that ship~~ rappel down to the ships from armed helicopter gun platforms in the dead of night, wearing full strike-team gear, knows the people aboard ~~were vicious thugs, not “peace activists.”~~ had every right to be completely freaked-out and in fear for their lives.
