An astoundingly good night to be a Democrat

After several tough months of wondering if the Democratic party would ever be united again, Hillary Clinton, in one pitch-perfect, heartfelt speech, just persuasively and decisively corralled the World’s Most Fucked Up and Fantastic Family together again.

That was a thing of beauty. America just got the big break it so richly deserves. Tonight, we celebrate.

MORE: Pumalicious!, of all people, donated $10 to Hillary following her speech, so with the backing of my fellow Rumproast bloggers (and PUMA hunters) Betty Cracker and poputonian, we’re encouraging everyone else to do the same. If you didn’t get ten bucks of enjoyment out of that speech, maybe you should be out roaring or pouncing somewhere. Donate here.

Hillary hit a grand slam with that speech.

The audience are breathless waiting for the response from Petey Puma Pants!

Wow. Just wow. I think Pumalicious in the thread below made a great suggestion. I’m throwing $10 Hillary’s way. Awesome speech.

I agree Betty and thought the same thing when I read pumalicious’ post.

Just added a donation request to the post.

Kevin (not K) announced he donated $50 in the open thread.

Meanwhile, in a parallel universe, our fellow Hillary admirers had this to say:

What does this color pantsuit mean?

#19 pumetta on 08.26.08 at 10:48 pm
Notice how she is shaking her head “no” as she speaks….

#38 hillfan4mccain on 08.26.08 at 10:52 pm
Orange: tint of color of puma (cat) coat.

Uh-huh. The orange pantsuit was chosen to signal the mighty PUMA pride.

She is talking to us right now!

Yeah, you dumb motherfuckers. She’s telling you if you believe in what she stands for, don’t vote for the dude who stands for the exact opposite.

Hillary
You sold out! BO is a cheat and a fraud.

Mmmhmmm. Who coulda seen that one coming? That’s okay, Hillary. Real Democrats still love ya. Then one almost gets it:

#98 Ergot4Hill on 08.26.08 at 11:02 pm
How can we profess to support Hillary but at the same time not listen to her admonitions to us—admonitions that if we really support what she stands for, that we have to support Obama?
Are we saying we know better than her?
I have a headache from this, fellow PUMAs.

#123 pumetta on 08.26.08 at 11:06 pm
Is she telling us to keep going?

#159 jody in florida on 08.26.08 at 11:11 pm
If you disregard the references to NObo, it sounds like she’s saying, “don’t give up the fight.” maybe i’m delusional…

maybe i’m delusional…” FIXED.

#239 redraz9 on 08.26.08 at 11:25 pm
So we have another day of trying to figure out what she means…..lol
This woman is killing me……lol

Oh Redraz, just use those things that are holding up your glasses—they’re called ears. She’s not speaking in code. She’s not signaling you loons with her pantsuits. She’s telling you to stop being a bunch of selfish babies.

Yeah, I just made the mistake of looking at The Confluence. As I’ve been saying for ages, these horrible piss-poor Democrats are beyond repair.  Hillary may have been trying to get through to PUMAs, but it won’t work. Good riddance to them. Hillary did, however, probably get through to a much, much larger group of her hardcore supporters who were still on the fence and would never, ever want to be associated with the lunatic PUMA fringe.

I knew the PUMAs were delusional but dear god what the fuck are they going on about?

Being a cynic I’m going to wait until after Billy Bob’s speech tomorrow to give Hil some of my cash.

“Are we saying we know better than her?
I have a headache from this, fellow PUMAs.”

Oh noes!  I’m trying to actually THINK!  OW, OW, OW!  It’s funny about the color of her pantsuit (LOVED the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pantsuit line BTW) because there was an article in the Living section of the paper where Michael Kors was going on about how mustard is the hot new color right now (seriously!) so Hillary was just styling with it.  Go Hillary!  I knew you’d come through, girl.  Now tell that hubby of yours to get with it too - does he want to see you and Chelsea scowling at him in the audience tomorrow night?  Off to donate then go to bed.

Thanks for the props, Kev.  I can’t wait for tomorrow.  Bubba is going to not only knock one out of the park, he’s going to follow it up with an inside the park home run.

Damn this is a great night.

“Are we saying we know better than her?
I have a headache from this, fellow PUMAs.”

HAHAHAHAHA!

DILEMMA!  PARADOX!  ILLOGICAL! CIRCUITS FAILING!

MUST… GET TRANSFUSION…FROM ROVE…MUST…

FAIL….

That was a fantastic speech.  If she’d had that attitude all the way through the primaries instead of getting all up herself maybe she would’ve won after all instead of being pipped at the post.

I think I can translate the gist of Hillary’s speech in 10 words or less for poor old redraz9 and the rest of the Pumas.  She means, my dears, “For fuck’s sake, vote Obama or we’re all screwed!”

She didn’t push Obama’s name all that much, opting to push the party instead.  I think that was a good choice to bring over those who aren’t sold on Obama himself.  She was saying even if you don’t like our choice of candidate, he is so much better than the alternative.

She didn’t need to preach to the choir.

The Carville sneakers make a little more sense in light of this:

DENVER (CNN) – Hillary Clinton will be on hand for Barack Obama’s acceptance speech, but according to a source close to former President Bill Clinton, he will not: the source tells CNN that Clinton will not join his wife at Invesco Field Thursday night.

DENVER (CNN) – Hillary Clinton will be on hand for Barack Obama’s acceptance speech, but according to a source close to former President Bill Clinton, he will not: the source tells CNN that Clinton will not join his wife at Invesco Field Thursday night.

That’s perfectly fine.  It’s his wife and his legacy. His wife came off as a winner.  Unfortunately, that’s all the talking heads will be yammering about for the next two days.

I was less impressed with Hillary’s speech than some. I think to have done what was needed she would have had to directly rejected the poisonous memes that her campaign promulgated and which infect her followers. In particular the claim that she didn’t lose fair and square.  I think Josh Green put it well for The Atlantic

“After all the breathless speculation, where does this leave Obama? My guess is: slightly better off.

A major reason why Clinton lost the nomination was her inability to fully commit to a strategy. Once she conceded, this stopped being her problem and became his: for all the talk of unity and coming together, Clinton seemed serially unwilling to commit to the idea of Obama as Democratic nominee. Thus, each outlay of dutiful public “support” was eventually marred by some tactless remark or hint of encouragement to an outraged bitter-ender that, if only they kept faith, there might still be a way. There wasn’t. And each episode brought the controversy roaring back, further imperiling the prospects of the actual nominee.

This always struck me as the behavior of someone aware of her duty yet allergic to the idea of turning away even a shred of support. Clinton obviously still wants to be president. Tonight, she swallowed the entitlement that is intrinsic to both Clintons and said the right things. She made the intellectual case for Obama. She seemed finally to accept that, at least for now, her own political future is inextricably bound to his. Most important to the Obama campaign, she explained in somewhat clinical terms why she supports him, and indicated, fairly explicitly and before an audience of diehard supporters, that everyone else must now do so too. She checked that box.

“None of us can sit on the sidelines,” Clinton said, but did not implore. “No way. No how. No McCain.” Had the message come any later, it wouldn’t have counted. Had it come with real feeling, it would have counted for much more.”

oh and more on pantsuit language:

“233 PortiaElizabeth on 08.27.08 at 7:34 am
I just found this over at Bitter Politicz:

One of Uppity Woman’s posts has a comment on the significance of the orange pantsuit. Seems that’s the color the Ukrainian revolutionaries would wear to protest the rigged selection/ not election process they were forced to endure. Ya thinkd Bill and Hillary Clinton would be smart enough to make a statement like this? Hell yes!! And it would fly right over that idiot’s head. The most incredibly classy version of flipping BO the bird we’ll ever see!”

The PUMAs are like the social conservatives…they’ll find a way to look at a rock and see a tree because they have to see that tree!

That comment about the orange pantsuit mirroring the significance of the Orange Revolution in the Ukraine is exactly what I’m talking about: It’s a ridiculous idea to anyone who doesn’t need to believe that Hillary is really dog whistling to them. But to those who live only to fill in between the lines, they’ll grab any little stray thread and run with it.

The next stop for these people is LaRouche Territory.

That’s funny, I got up the morning after Hillary’s speech and made my first donation to her debt fund.
