BCS National Championship Game

I haven’t followed college football as closely this year as I have in the past. Not just because my team (the not-so-mighty Gators) sucked this year either.

My loss of interest may be because the long-time revulsion I’ve felt at how the NCAA exploits athletes and the ways schools exalt their football programs to the detriment of academics was amplified a hundred million times by the horrifying activities that were allegedly covered up at Penn State. Yeah, it wasn’t MY team, but those who think the mindset that compelled outwardly normal, decent people to turn a blind eye to a serial child predator is confined to Happy Valley are kidding themselves. It’s enough to put a fan off her Jello shots.

But I’m still going to watch the BCS Championship game tonight, and furthermore, I’m going to make a prediction: LSU will beat Alabama. Again. Geaux Tigers!

I’d use those (and the broader culture you mention) as an excuse to be smug about never being a football fan, but it’s really just a matter of taste, so I can’t.

It could happen to anybody’s favorite activity which has been hyped all out of proportion to its actual importance. Like, who knows what evils lurk among the production staff of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic?

I haven’t watched a game all season, Betty, and as for this farce of a “championship” game I hafta go with the schol that gave us the “Chinese Bandits”.

I’ve had too much or too little to drink to properly snark on it myself. I can’t be sure, so I’m going to assume for now it’s too little.

Wow, HB—I don’t think I could go cold turkey like that! RE: Bama, I mostly just dislike Saban. I’ve always had a soft spot for LSU. They aren’t doing so hot so far, though; maybe I jinxed them.

I think people are too heartbroken by Obama appointing a raving liberal as his new Chief of Staff to talk about that at the moment. Or excited at the fact he worked for Citibank for a year. I dunno, it’s so hard to keep up with the trends of da yoof.

Oh, and spare a thought for poor Oliver. Been there, it sucks, brave and right thing to do.

A friend of ours went to Bama, so we share her triumph. LSU was shut OUT, y’all. Under normal circs I wouldn’t care, but in that emotional vacuum I went with our friend’s preference. Let’s just move on.

21-0. So much for my career as a bowl game prognosticator. I should have known better—it was a rematch! The first time my Gators won a National Championship, we had been beaten by Florida State in the regular season. We beat them 52-20 in the rematch.
