Blackheart (Open Thread)

Here’s Joan Jett, the boss hen (and my pal Ravenclaw the Red, who appears to be popping out of JJ’s breast, “Alien”-style):

JJ is nice to humans, but she’s pretty mean to her fellow fowl. I mentioned her bullying ways once before, and some of you gently admonished me, saying that JJ was being firm, not a bully. Well, maybe. All I know is I’m glad I don’t have a red comb or neck dooley-bobs for her to pull!

If all of your fowl are so wonderfully named, Betty, I think you’re going to need to list them for us.

It’s the Chicken Way.  In a big flock, there is always some poor omega-level hen who is nearly naked from all the mean girl crap she gets from the rest of them.  Makes me feel better about not being a vegetarian!

@ Lowkey—I let the kids name them, so I can’t take credit (or blame), but here goes:

Joan Jett
Ravenclaw
Ninja
Fuzzbutt
Henrietta
Bigfoot
Dorito

I would have gone with something like General Tso, Kung Pao, etc., if I were in charge of naming the flock. Not that I would ever consider eating one of them—they are pets. I can’t eat chicken at all anymore, and I used to really like it. Le sigh.

I fostered a goat once for a biker club and called him “Barbeque”, considering his ultimate destiny.

I’m going to go on record saying that I love, love, love Joan Jett.  She lives on Long Island (back in the day, she saved a little kid from drowning- in my mind, I picture her clad in a black leather jacket, riding a Harley into the surf, and pulling the kid out… don’t tell me that’s impossible!), and she plays a lot of local shows, a lot of free promotional appearances at parks.  I think I may have seen her play more than anyone else, and she always delivers one hell of a show.

Ahhh… Joan, you’re the best.  Oh, and chickens?  I like chickens.

I can’t eat chicken at all anymore, and I used to really like it. Le sigh.

Hmmm.  I’ve been thinking of getting a couple of layers now that my big shaggy mutt is gone (cuz he had hunting dog in him somewhere and would have totally taken chickens out, no matter how secure the coop) but this gives me pause.  I really like chicken too.  So maybe I just have to settle for buying my eggs at the farmer’s market. ;-)
