Can someone please tell me who “Jon and Kate” ARE?

Why do I have to keep having headlines about these people thrust into my face every time I open my browser or stand in line at the grocery store?  Who are they anyway?  I mean, from what I can gather they seem to be a couple of self centered douchebags who have been exploiting the circumstances of their family (sextuplets or something?) on a reality show for several years and now have gone full bore crazy, split up and are vomiting all the loathsome details of their *personal* lives and all the dirt they can dig up on each other all over cable teevee and the tabloids (and yes, I’m including People Magazine in that term) and getting PAID for it.  Do I have this right or am I once again living in some kind of parallel universe where up is down and everyone is batshit crazy?  Oh, and as long as we’re at it . . . who are HEIDI and SPENCER and WHY SHOULD WE CARE?!?

p.s.  I didn’t post a picture of Jonandkate because I couldn’t find any where they didn’t have obnoxious smirking expressions.  Maybe that’s just the way their faces are.  Or maybe their faces froze like that just like your grandma said would happen.

That about sums up my understanding of them too. I look forward to the kids’ revenge: “8 minus Jon & Kate,” which will hopefully generate enough $$ to fund the extensive therapy these kids will need to process their parents’ ostentatious douchebaggery.

Yesterday in the check-out line, I saw a tabloid heading proclaiming that Octomom was calling out Kate for being a crappy, exploitive parent. Which was a little like reading that OJ disapproves of Chris Brown’s personal relationship skills.

Betty, I can see it now on cable: Battle of the Litter Shitters!

i found a picture of them online where they don’t have those stupid smirks-

Among the Google ads for this post: “Will Jon & Kate Divorce?” and “Are Jon And Kate Moving?” Nice.

For the record, I have never watched the show or seen or heard either of them or read tabloids, yet some how I still know all about them. WTF is up with that?

Why does TV promote and glorify people for being idiots who made bad choices?

I’ll just leave this here.

Mar, no more notion than you or Betty! I think they coach a Little League team or something. Weren’t they thrown out of the L.L. World Series for pitching a ringer in playoffs?

Well, see, Kate is a bitchy sufferer of OCD and Jon is an uncommunicative slacker and the two of them married in their early 20s and through the wonders of assisted reproductive technology managed to produce 8 kids in 5 years… and then through the miracle of desperate cable programming producers got their own TV show along with lots of extra goodies like expensive trips and housing upgrades… and eventually, through the sheer erosive nature of their personalities, Jon and Kate drove each other to the brink of insanity (and drove their kids to numerous acting-out behaviors)... and then they filed for divorce… and Jon got several new and very young girlfriends, some motorcycles, and a bachelor pad in Manhattan and Kate got really pissed off.  Oh, and I forgot to mention that they’re good Christians, you bet. Yep, it’s been 3 or 4 seasons of very precious memories.

Thank you Grace.  You will now be my GoTo person for information on obnoxious teevee fake celebrities.  Anything you can do to enlighten me on Heidi and Spencer will also be appreciated.  ;-)

justlen - isn’t that a picture of an actual Congressman and his family?  I think I saw an article about him and his family once.  I was near apoplexy by the time I finished it.

I honestly dunno, but I’ve never watched that Idol somethingorother show either yet know several people who’ve surrendered huge swaths of their lives to it. Yet I keep seeing references to both.

Now, “Octomom, the Reckoning” I’d watch.

marinedenver, I think it’s the Duggar family.

Jon & Kate I’ve heard of.  Who the hell are Heidi and Spencer?

I think it’s the Duggar family

Oh, dear heaven, those people are reality show family exploiters too!  Just with a Christian twist (God is providing for them by giving them a reality show and book royalties).

marine, did you see the pictures of the house the freakshow family lives in? Somebody is funding them.

In answer to your questions other than two names that I frequently see on tabloid covers when I am stood in line at the grocery store and some people that the nice lady on MSNBC on weekend mornings is forced to report on to the point one morning I honestly thought she was going to vomit on set, I have no idea who they are.  I personally think reality TV has been the downfall of civilized society, we are not far from going back to stadiums where people are fed to lions and forced to fight each other to the death (not that there is anything wrong with that if it rids us of the people who watch this drivel).

Why does TV promote and glorify people for being idiots who made bad choices?

Someone’s gotta cover politics.

The Washington Post had a column about the current crop of the “famous for being famous”.  Here it is:

Yes you have it right. As for Heidi and Spencer, you’re best off not knowing. Andy Warhol was right, which sucks big-time.
