Classy. Real Classy.

As you may have seen, over the weekend a highly predictable blogstorm erupted after extremely unpleasant things were said in a “caption this” photo thread on Free Republic targeting Malia Obama for wearing a T-shirt sporting the CND/peace symbol. The story was reported in the Vancouver Sun by Chris Parry, who also posts at Daily Kos as “hollywoodoz”:

“A typical street whore.” “A bunch of ghetto thugs.” “Ghetto street trash.” “Wonder when she will get her first abortion.”

These are a small selection of some of the racially-charged comments posted to the conservative ‘Free Republic’ blog Thursday, aimed at U.S. President Barack Obama’s 11-year-old daughter Malia after she was photographed wearing a t-shirt with a peace sign on the front.

The thread was accompanied by a photo of Michelle Obama speaking to Malia that featured the caption, “To entertain her daughter, Michelle Obama loves to make monkey sounds.”

Free Republic immediately circled the wagons. The offending thread was first canned, then reinstated with most of the comments intact (it may have been pulled again by now - it’s been hard to keep up!).

Stellar genius FR poster joinedafterattack then tantalized his fellow freepers with the promise of a “bombshell” post exposing Parry. After a series of delays which resembled the “whitey tape” debacle in miniature, what finally hit the tubes proved to be more of a spittle-saturated squib of a smear campaign:

BOMBSHELL & FREEPER CALL TO ACTION on Daily Kos & Vancouver Sun Reporter [Hot Links @ #208]

Freepers, get the word out loud and wide. The Vancouver Sun “jounalist” Chris Parry that defamed Jim Robinson and FreeRepublic is none other than radical left blogger “Hollywoodoz” at the Daily Kos. In addition to writting for the Vancouver Sun, Chris is a frustrated and failed internet entrepernuer having launched many websites and blogs, all of which have virtually no traffic, following, or success. Chris also writes movie reviews, though these are pretty lame.

Chris Parry actually advocated attacking “negros” and blaming the republicans for it. See this post at the Daily Kos by “hollywoodoz”, who is in reallity, as proven below Chris Parry of the Vancouver Sun. See it here: http://www.dailykos.com/story/2005/9/9/10324/92702 This spells BUSH, CHENEY, BROWN. Now if this is not grounds for losing your job at the Vancouver Sun, I don’t know what is.

Bloody Useless Sack of Hatred

Can He Eat Negro Eyes Yet

Blaming Republicans Only Works Now

Chris Parry to state it again, has advocated attacking blacks and blaming republicans. This explains his article attacking FreeRepublic about post about the Obama girls. Amazing. Looks like Chris has done what he advocated back in his Daily Kos post.

Additional FACTS (links and back up below) A review of Chris Parry’s posts on Daily Kos and other places on the net reveals that far from being an unbiased reported printing the facts, Chris Parry has called for or stated, among other things:

- Violence against those that disagree with him and his left wing beliefs. (1)

- Chris has written in the Daily Kos that people should be “google bombing” Bill O’reilly as a “terrorist sympathizer.” Is that what we should expect from unbiased media writters at the Vancouver Sun? (2)

- Bashed Carrie-Prejean in his Sun articles to support his personal biases as exposed in the Daily Kos (3)

- Bashed “tea parties” in his articles which were then held up by the left as proof that tea parties failed. Afterall, this news came from a real “reporter” unbiased in his coverage right? (4)

- Supports Michael Moore as he bashes President Bush with the usual left crap while at the same time calling himself “an objective writer” (yes, he is that wacked out) (5)

- Says it is “understandable” why Saddam tried to kill Bush Senior. Yikes, that is scary. (6)

- Apparently has a preference for “girl on girl action” (moderator, see the link below). Guess this disproves those that thought he went the other way. With a blogging name like “hollywoodoz” one might have thought he was searching over the “rainbow” for other types in Hollywood. (7)

- There is evidence of his being in contact with Markos Moulitsas of the Kos. No conspiracy here, just facts. (8)

- Apparently Chris Parry is a loan shark of sorts taking money and interest from small international companies desperate for cash. He has even funded palestinean construction. Interesting. (9)

- What motivated Chris Parry to attack FreeRepublic and Jim Robinson? The evidence is clear that Chris Parry has his own left agenda, one proven by his posts in the Daily Kos.

- Chris is Canadian. Doesn’t he have enough problems in his own country to write about. All the political articles he has written are about the US and left leaning. All his other articles deal with Canada. Odd. Note this hit on Condi Rice. The guy is a nut. (10)

MY OPINONTake the time to follow the facts below and then get this out to his boss at the Vancouver Sun and to the MSM, and in particular David Shuster who will be reporting on Chris Parry’s Vancouver Sun article on Monday. If Shuster is to quote Chris Parry, he ought to state that he also a left wing blogger for Daily Kos who advocates punching “you in the fucking head” if you disagree with him and that Chris Parry also has manipulated information to destroy others before and advocated attacking blacks and blaming it on republicans.

These attempts to discredit Parry are pretty laughable since the offending thread must by now be one of the most screencapped and otherwise recorded ever. The story has also been picked up by MSNBC, which is set to cover the story today, according to David Shuster. This may have added to the anxiety evident in the infighting that erupted in a subsequent FR post, with those who would defend what was said going the full 12 rounds with those who want a bit more decorum over there.

Parry himself responded with a rebuttal on FR:

To: joinedafterattack

Uh, you’ve drawn a few odd conclusions here.

Yep, I absolutely posted at DailyKos.com before starting work at The Sun. Also posted here. Also posted at MLB.com and scout.com and… god, after fifteen years on the internet, I might even have visited a porn site or two.

I guess the big question here is “and?”

Has no Fox News personality ever posted here? Has no conservative columnist ever deigned you worthy to post a comment?

Your massive ‘find’ is nothing more than a couple of breadcrumbs on the internet trail that point to a couple of websites I long ago sold off (Unreel Media is owned by another company these days, though if you’re looking for editorial services, they’re amazing and worth a call).

Did I organize a Google Bomb of Bill O’Reilly a few years back when he called for an attack on San Francisco? Sure enough. Proud moment.

Do I think Carrie Prejean is a moron? I do. Absolutely.

Do I think Michael Moore was right? Yup. I think history proved it, though I’ll agree he cheats to get the footage he wants (you can find plenty on dKos where I’ve said as much).

Do I think it’s understandable Saddam tried to off Bush Sr? Sure. Bush told him that the US had no beef with Iraq muscling Kuwait over an oil dispute, so when the US suddenly called him evil for doing so, it would make sense they’d have a beef. I’m not saying he’d be right in going after Pappy, I just think the urge to do so would be understandable coming from him.

As far as girl on girl action is concerned, like I said, I don’t own those sites anymore. Well, not all of them. Not that one, anyway. Last I heard it was going to be a techy review site, but I guess they opted for automated news aggregation of a given sort. I contacted the owner and he took the phrase off the site just now, so there’s one for the little guy.

Yes, i have had contact with Markos Moulitsas. I emailed him once. I’m guessing Jim (sorry for the name screw-up - will fix it when i’m next at my desk) has done same.

As for the loan sharking bit… well, that’s just a terrible lie. I’m a member of a website called Kiva.org, that lends money to third world people who want to start a business and can’t get credit due to their circumstances. I would send $50 every few weeks to be loaned to an ox farmer in Zambia or a baker in Azerbaijan, and they would then pay the loan back as they could (interest-free) and the money could then be re-loaned elsewhere. If that’s loan-sharking, then I guess I’m a loan shark, but I’m thinking any rational person would see it as a good thing to do. Sending aid is dumb, because you’re just temporarily filling a hole. Offering microcredit builds an economy. Again, proud moment.

What motivated me to write the piece about FR?

Well, you see, I’ve seen a lot of anonymous blog posts in my time that were nasty, vicious and beyond the pale. They happen on dKos too, as you know, but most of the time they’re isolated incidents and quickly stomped.

But this was an entire thread in which everyone - bar a couple - were pounding out racial, sexist and just plain boorish abuse at an 11-year-old girl. That’s not cool.

That it was suppressed and placed under review would make it a non-story, if it stayed suppressed, but when it came back, with a note mocking the person that complained, that comes across as ‘site approval’ to me.

More comments of the same nature followed before someone finally put the kybosh on things - after it went public.

Say what you will about my political beliefs (I’m a lefty, never hidden it), but that’s a story.

For those who wondered, yes, I believe Letterman’s joke was wrong. I also note he apologized and clarified his intent on national TV. So be it.

What it all comes down to is, if you properly moderate your forum (Gosh, I called it a blog? Consider me flayed) so that 11-year-old girls aren’t called whores, we can go back to just believing in opposite things and I can get back to writing about MMA, Jon and Kate Plus 8, and other such important things.

Much love, and feel free to drop me a line at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) if you want to discuss things further. I’m an open book, as should be any journalist, left, right or otherwise.

At this point, I’d like to give a special award to Gawker, which ran with the FR smears with what seems to me an uncharacteristic lack of perspective (though I’m not that regular a reader).

Predictably, this is a storm that hasn’t stayed in its teacup, and some of the RW blogs are already on the defensive and lashing out with wild claims about Parry, such as JammieWearingFool. Since I’m in an award-giving mood, here’s one for an interesting variant on Godwin’s Law in the comments there:

Gee, I remember someone else that advocated the same thing, “Chris Parry to state it again, has advocated attacking blacks and blaming republicans.” only this ‘infamous’ person advocated blaming whites and went on to star in one of Hollywood’s most gruesome murders.

Charles Manson ring any bells?

Amusing as all this is squirming is, it goes without saying that the targeting of Malia Obama in this way is heinous - and no, I also don’t agree with targeting Palin’s family in a similar tone, before some wingnut pops up spouting that sort of self-justificatory crap.

Not that it’s restricted to Free Republic. Those of us who spend much time on the you-know-who and RW blogs will have our own examples of horrible things that have been posted in the last year. Here’s one I spotted in comments over at Ace of Spades the other day. I nominated the writer, di butler, for Asshole of the Week. In a pretty strong field, I think she’s still a contender:

83 I couldn’t believe it when I saw the article about Worf jr. in the peace t-shirt. The very idea that an 11 yr old was making a political statement at the G-8 by wearing the shirt to protest arms and wars is beyond retarded. Millions of kids wear shirts and what have you with peace symbols on it. She wore the shirt for one of two reasons: One, she thought it was hip and looked cool. Two: Worf sr. told her to. I know 11 yr olds. They don’t understand or really care about all that crap, unless they are some child prodigy, and frankly she doesn’t come across as all that swift. I also think she looks a little too casual and like some celebrity or rapper’s kid. I understand she is on vacay and just hanging, but couldn’t they have packed her something a little nicer, especially knowing she is going to be photographed a zillion times?

For those who may be mystified, Ace is in the habit of referring to Michelle Obama as “the First Klingon,” as “pushback,” so he claims. Which makes the extension to calling Malia Obama “Worf Jr.” a little less imaginative.

There. And I didn’t call them a bunch of racist fuckwits once.

Oops.

MORE: The observant among you may have noticed that the example above where Parry allegedly “advocated attacking negros and blaming the republicans for it” is actually an acrostic of sorts (pretty lame, but I expect Parry didn’t imagine it was destined for stardom one day - it was written a week or so after Katrina):

Bloody
Useless
Sack of
Hatred

Can
He
Eat
Negro
Eyes
Yet

Blaming
Republicans
Only
Works
Now

There’s no other word for it - this allegation is a big fat LIE, plain and simple. I don’t expect much out of Free Republic, but I hope Gawker at least will run an update, retraction, and possibly offer an apology for a pisspoor piece of journalism by any standards, weekend or no.

UPDATE: As Shuster notes, it’s now just getting silly over there:

David Shuster is a poofter as well as a Zero kneepaddist.

And RW blogs are still peddling the unsubstantiated Gawker meme that somehow - nobody specifies how - Parry incited, or even spoofed, the Malia-bashing.

I know 11 yr olds. They don’t understand or really care about all that crap, unless they are some child prodigy…

So Asshole of the Week also doesn’t know any 11-year-olds capable of understanding basic politics or committing to causes. Either the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree in the intellectual curiosity department or these folks keep their kids remarkably ignorant of current events. My guess is the latter, probably because they’re afraid their kids would call them out for being retrograde jackasses.

Whether or not Parry is an agent provocateur, my reaction at scrolling through the original FR thread was surprise at how restrained the commenters were in their routine, reflex thinly-disguised rage at having America represented by a Black Family That Acts White But is Really Just Ghetto Trash. Usually, they’re a lot more up-front and unguarded, and vastly more incendiary with their P-shopped images. It’s pointless to spoof them, since they’ve already got it covered “in spades.”

In hindsight, that was actually a rather poor exemplar thread to demonstrate racism on FR…but my guess is that the presence of a “peace symbol” caused their “‘ho/bitch/General-Cinque-raped-Patty-Hearst” brain centers to get shorted-out by their “dirty-hippies-lost-Vietnam-and-spit-on-our-soldiers” neuron clusters, resulting in an overall voltage drop across the system.

How dare you point out the nasty things we actually said? We’ll point out nasty things you didn’t say, so there!

They don’t, won’t and can’t get it.

I must also note that at least one Anthrax hoaxer and the guy who tried to grab Elie Weisel in order to make him confess that the Holocaust never happened were both ... Surprise! Regular posters at Freeperville.

Isn’t this behaviour expected of FR?

Isn’t this behaviour expected of FR?

What I don’t expect is the likes of Gawker promoting a meme that gives the RW blogs cut-and-paste cover. It’s shoddy reporting. From the comments on the Gawker thread linked above, the author opines:

Foster Kamer
07/12/09

Well, this one’s developing fast: Parry responded to the accusations by Free Republic here. Down the rabbit hole we go…
Edited at 07/12/09 3:39 PM

That’s just not good enough. A decent journo would have run the allegations by Parry before publishing.

It’s also easy to forget that we blogstalkers may be familiar with FR’s bent and tactics, but not everyone in the blogosphere is, let alone normal human beings.
