Confimation Hearings Under Way - Let the Poo Flinging Begin!

Up first?  Ms. Senator Hillary Clinton, President Elect Obama’s choice for Secretary of State.  What can we dig up?  Hmmmmmmm.  I know, her husband runs some, you know, charity kind of things.  I’ll just BET there’s some dirt there!

Well, not exactly.  The AP breathlessly reports that Clinton intervened at least six times over six years in government issues directly affecting companies that later joined the Clinton Foundation’s Clinton Global Initiative.  For a bit of background the Clinton Global Intiative or CGI was an outgrowth of the Clinton Foundation and

reflects his (Bill Clinton’s) belief that governments need collaboration from the private sector, non-governmental organizations, and other global leaders to effectively confront the world’s most pressing problems. After attending thousands of meetings during his career in which urgent needs were discussed but no action was taken to solve them, President Clinton saw a need to establish a new kind of meeting with an emphasis on results.

(later)

To fulfill the action-oriented mission of CGI, all members devise practical solutions to global issues through the development of specific and measurable Commitments to Action.

The website further notes that, since it was begun, members of the CGI have made over 1,200 commitments around the world with a monetary value of about $46 billion.

And Hillary somehow was involved with six of the companies?  What did she do?

Well, first off, in 2004, she wrote a letter to the FCC expressing concerns about the effect on local carriers, such as a company named PAETEC of changes in local exchange carrier access rates.  A family foundation associated with the chief executive of PAETEC later joined the CGI (in 2007) and has since made a $10 million dollar pledge to MIT for development of solar energy.

Second, in 2005, she wrote to HHS urging approval of Gardasil, the newly developed human papillomavirus vaccine.  HPV infection is a leading cause of cervical cancer, by the way (a fact not mentioned by the AP.)  Merck, the developer of the vaccine, later also joined CGI.

Another company that suspiciously aligned with CGI was Barr Pharmaceuticals.  AFTER Hillary wrote to HHS in August 2005 urging that “science, not politics” guide the agency in it’s decision to approve Plan B, AKA the “morning after” pill.

Finally, the article relates that in 2003,  Hillary intervened in a dispute about building a pipeline on behalf of KeySpan Energy along with “several other members of Congress from New York”.  And, suspiciously, in 2007, KeySpan, now called National Grid, joined the CGI.

So, wait.  First I’m only counting four things, not six.  And two of these “interventions” involved issues of great significance to feminists and anyone concerned with women’s health issues.  Hell, I wrote to HHS about Plan B.  I wasn’t aware of Gardasil when it was being approved or I would have written about that too!  Hillary is nothing if not a feminist, and has always championed women’s health issues.  I would have been pissed off if she HADN’T written those letters.

And the other two, hugely suspicious, letters involve supporting constituent issues and, in the case of the pipeline, she was also supported by several other NY Congress people.

Not to mention that what these companies are doing, by involving themselves in the global community through membership in the CGI, is a very positive and good thing.  Why does the AP want to make it look like some kind of payola?

Hahahahahahahahahaha.  What am I saying.  It’s the AP!!

Dear President Obama;

I would gladly donate $100 a month to the DNC if you will commit to do one small thing every day to piss the pumas off.

I’m not asking for much, just a “sweetie,” or occasional urban black comment, or a joke about your Kenyan citizenship.

I will also make a single donation of $500 if you release the whitey tape exactly one minute after you are sworn in.

Regards;

justlen

I’d send in $1000 if he’d say “‘scuse me while I whip this out” as he approaches the podium to give his inaugural speech.

How about a “where all the white women at?”

or instead of “so help me God” he says “fo’ shnizzle”

Here’s the thing I don’t quite get about the Clintons: they get really secretive about things when they don’t need to. They were so obdurate about not releasing any of the CGI/Library donor info during the primaries, and they also held out on releasing Hillary’s First Lady records until late in the day. And then there really wasn’t anything of note in the latter—if anything, they revealed that she wasn’t anywhere near the shadow president both her foes and fans had painted.

I understand that they’ve been smeared unfairly (Whitewater, Vince Foster), but the pattern of holding out/not finding records (the Rose Law Firm billing records) tends to give more ammo to their enemies, not less. And I really don’t think this is the same thing as saying “Why doesn’t Obama release the ‘vault’ copy of the COLB if he doesn’t have anything to hide?” It’s obvious that he couldn’t have gone to law school, received a passport, or run for any public office if his citizenship wasn’t clear.

But in the case of the CGI and First Lady records, I think we can argue that those are pertinent to figuring out conflicts of interest. And when the Clintons dig in their heels until they absolutely have to go to transparency (as with this appointment), it puzzles me.

Especially when there really isn’t any big fire there to be seen. I suppose it’s the survival technique they’ve adopted after being accused of such nonsense.

Anyway. Will be glad when these confirmation hearings are all done and everyone can get to work!

The Millenium Pipeline was originally and ingeniously planned to run through almost every nature preserve in Westchester, including the Brinton Arboretum in my hometown. Hillary was one of the officials who applied pressure to get it moved to a less ecologically sensitive, and probably less politically connected, route.

The AP didn’t mention HRC’s negative interference in any of these donors’ business before the state. Not that I don’t think Hill has the ethics of a Borgia, but seeing the formerly respected wire service so obviously slanting a story is just plain embarrassing.

I recall this about Ron Fournier who runs the Washington bureau of AP(from Sourcewatch): “In October 2006, prior to returning to AP, Fournier was approached to see if he was interested in a ‘senior advisory role’ in communications for John McCain’s presidential campaign.”

AP is part of a media orthodoxy very comfortable with what Eric Boehlert called “Versailles,” an aristocratic deference by the media to the elite.

Apply grain of salt as needed.

AP is the Fox News of wire services. The only good thing (well, sort of) is that fewer and fewer papers are using them. I feel bad for the good AP reporters who are getting shafted, but not for the brand overall. When Nedra “Shameful Hack” Pickler loses her job, it will be a good day.

When Nedra “Shameful Hack” Pickler loses her job, it will be a good day.

Amen. She’s a complete disgrace.

@Kerry Reid,
I think the Clintons used to try to quash rumors and disinformation right at the get-to.  But, it didn’t work.  It just kept coming.  Much of it being flung by Richard Mellon Scaiffe’s reporters.

I think they learned.

And, I think Obama learned by watching.

By the way, I think we pitched a complete shutout in the Weblog awards - no PUMA site won.

Mimi, you’re probably right. Thought that still makes me wonder why Hillary played kissy-face with Scaife during the primaries.

I’d send in $1000 if he’d say “‘scuse me while I whip this out” as he approaches the podium to give his inaugural speech.

FTW!!!1!

I’m setting my VCR just in case.

By the way, I think we pitched a complete shutout in the Weblog awards - no PUMA site won.

Yeah, I just saw that.  Too funny. Even the non-PUMA stuff they endorsed didn’t win. I think the only PUMA-endorsed blog (The Effluence) that won was Cake Wrecks and that was a huge front-runner from the get-go. It appears they got their PUMA HAKA all over Fuck You, Penguin, who appears to have lost a close one to Cute Overload.

Unfortunately, it looks like Pharyngula lost to the anti-global warming site, Watt’s Up With That? I hope that the award they get will double as a life raft when the ice caps melt.

Marindenver, baby, sweetheart, everything you needed to know occurred in the first 10 or 15 minutes of that hearing. Indeed there was more sucking up going on in the Senate chamber this morning than at a vacuum cleaner convention. Though at first I thought all that fawning over Hillary would make the PUMAs happy, as Betty pointed out, it was probably just a sorry reminder that their gal was resigned to being a secretary while that one got to be President.

J.  I saw some of it this morning.  It reminded me of Meryl Streep’s “trial” in “Defending your Life.”  Everyone was giggling they were so giddy.

I loved “Defending Your Life”! Good call. (Making mental note to rent movie. :)

Kerry-

it looks like Pharyngula lost

PZ never acknowledged the contest , so I never mentioned it over there.

He must have had some reason because Pharyngula is probably 25 times larger than the #2 science blog, and they crash a poll somewhere almost everyday.

If he wanted to rally, there would have been no contest.  Maybe because most of his traffic is atheists and progressives he didn’t want to stomp science blogs for reasons of fairness, but I’m surprised he let some ‘Bad Science’ blog win, they hate bad science more than god over at pharyngula.

Lost in the pumPAC Triangle:

Griffin 01.13.09 at 7:34 pm

I absolutely will not do ONE THING that puts Hillary Clinton in a good light. She betrayed every American woman who supported her and that did not change simply because she’s up for SOS or because she’s made a few good sound bites. I will never support her again, after what she did, and I don’t understand why anyone in PUMA PAC would.

If you didn’t see it when it was posted, don’t look for it now.

The brief vogue of “Hillary-let-us-down-but-we’re-about-more-than-j ust-Hillary” posturing has passed. The PUMAs have fallen in love all over again.

I think what no one is addressing about HRC as Sec State, is how different is she gonna be from her husband> I mean ok, so we know her husband has a charity which takes billions in donations from foreign govts. We know that and can hold her feet to the fire. But when she is advising Obama, how different will her views be from that of her husband? That’s what I don’t like about her appt. I mean I have yet to hear of any of her views that were a significant departure from that of her husbands, like say the approach to Mideast peace, or bombing Iran or ...well bombing Iraq. I mean I know Obama is our President and will set policy, but he is already showing himself to be leaning towards a more centrist thinking. So exactly what is HRC going to bring to the table? People say, well she will be an effective administrator at State, but she couldn’t handle a own goddamn Presidential campaign. No one is asking her that. No one is asking about the lessons she learned from her health care initiative failure in the 90’s. I mean Im not saying she is a bad choice, but really, does she really need a free ride here?
