Friday Night Open Thread

Remember the 80s? Legwarmers, Shrinky Dinks, the ABC Friday Night Movie, Twitter not existing…

Commenters, come out to play-ee-yay!

Actually, going out to play-ee-yay would be preferable, but us destined-to-look-back-on-our-lives-with-regret types gotta have our voices heard too, am I right?

I’ve done a few odd bits of 80s nostalgia lately, mostly by watching movies. Back to the Future and One Crazy Summer were the last two.

I fear we’re in the wrong place at the wrong time.

A bunch of visitors are ending up on this old thread, having Googled GOP New Hampshire debate livestream.

They must be confused. REALLY confused. Not only was that one way back in October last, but the NH debate they were looking for isn’t till tomorrow night!

So they must be wondering how we were so prescient?

And how Cain ended up back in the race ...

(I managed it with a time-traveling DeLorean.)

I re- watched The Warrior recently. I loved as a kid but lowered my expectations accordingly. I was surprised at how well it’s held up. And that I fell in love with Deborah Van Valkenburgh again.

And hey, look! I guess Brits like it too.

Let’s see, the 1980’s.  Hmm, I got my BS in 1983, went to grad school in 1985 (no jobs, so what the hey?), and then got into a really lousy marriage with my grad school office-mate.  1990 dawned with a truly necessary divorce and I got my life back.

Needless to say, I like the 1990’s so much better; met the love of my life (who is still my hubby and we’re quite happy), changed careers a few times (what can I say?  I get bored easily), found where we wanted to live and have become as attached as barnicles.  Who says love’s not pretty?

Oh, and 3 cheers for the fact that it’s Friday night and (apparently) very few of us here are suffering the indignities of dating!

Heh. No dating for me - I met the love of my life in the 90s too (and we’re still together, I haven’t become a monk or nothin’.)

1980s were mostly high school and college for me so I remember them pretty fondly, what of them I can remember - Friday nights were pretty different back then.

Waxing nostalgic for the Age of Reagan and his Manichean world view requires proper musical accompaniment.
My work pal and I used to sing along in the lab when this came on WHFS during the latter’s waning days of alt-rock glory.

The Warriors was better as a book.
