Good Luck With All That, Mitt.

So, here’s what we get from Mitt Romney’s interview(s) thus far—he wants Obama to apologize for discussing Romney’s Bain Capital record, and also, he’s only going to disclose tax returns for two years.

Well, I’m sure that clears everything up, not.

For one thing, I’m certainly not the first person who would point out to Mitt that politics ain’t bean bag. Romney should not expect much sympathy regarding what is or isn’t a permissible charge during a campaign from someone who was accused of “palling around with terrorists” in his last one (or even hears a re-hash of old rubbish from Romney’s surrogates, like this). And for another, if there is any question regarding whether Romney was running Bain Capital even part-time after 1999, that buck should stop with none other than Mitt Romney.

With respect to the tax returns—it’s become a tradition that presidential candidates release their tax returns since some honest, moneyed, Republican candidate did just that thing in the 1960’s. It’s an unfortunate irony that this fellow was Mitt’s old man, but you’d think that would at least have clued him in to the idea that if he were going to run for president (like, once or twice), he might want to have tax returns that other people could look at. If anyone is creating the impression that there is something lurking in his returns—it’s him for making them a secretive, big deal.

Unless, you know—there’s really something there.  (Hmm—which would also be his responsibility, right?)

At any rate, if Romney thinks he’s getting an apology—uh, no.  And I would venture to guess that saying he won’t release any more than two years worth of returns is certainly not going to stop people from asking about them (which I’ve been saying since January, when it was his GOP competition asking.)

So, if he was looking for his interview time to fix the last few days of Bain-mania—no.  Not so much.

Poor Mitt.

He can’t talk about his term as governor because of ssshhh you know what, and now he’s having to claim that as a businessman he was an absentee sleeping partner.

I guess that leaves the Olympics and fancy hoss rustling.

Yup. The GOP only have themselves to blame. They can’t say his primary opponents didn’t warn them. Repeatedly.

I thought “running Bain Capital” was supposed to be his selling point.

Given the ginormous amount of ad money and ground game funds (less sure about whether this will be implemented effectively) it is essential that the Obama campaign decisively set Romney’s image early on.  If he goes into the Tampa Convention even slightly damaged goods that will help cement the popular image of him.  Of course, he will still get at least 45% of the “likely voters” (voters allowed to vote) but the balance depends upon…well…letting the Mittbot be itself.

“Well first of all, I’ve complied with the law ...”

To let me pay the lowest amount of taxes possible.*

“I know that there will always be calls for more.  People always want to get more.”

Especially if it’s FREE!!!

Sorry Willster.  Mr. and Ms. John Q. America ain’t going to buy this line of BS.

* As a CPA I never want my clients to pay more than they should but there is a qualitative difference between not padding your expense account and stashing huge wads of money offshore because you technically can.

Plus he seems to seriously not get the optics of digging his heels in and refusing to disclose any more than the absolute minimum that he has to, when all the recent presidents and presidential candidates have disclosed vastly more.  Either he definitely does have something to hide or he believes so totally in himself as the authoritarian father figure who sets the rules himself that he thinks he can say “no” and everyone will fall in line.

Neither answer is a good one for Willard.  Maybe for John McCain though.  ;-)

The appearance of problems with the tax returns could just be stupidity in being overly-secretive on his part (I doubt it—you can only read “He gave John McCain 23 yrs worth of returns and McCain chose Sarah Palin” on Twitter so many times without seriously wondering.)  But the poutrage and demand for an apology over the “felon or fraud” allegation is positively hysterical.

How dare the Obama campaign make a conjecture about my record based on information everyone has seen! (Let me guess, Willard—it hurts when we press riiiiggghhht there?)

Mitt just isn’t likeable anough to pull off the “They’re being so mean to meeeee” act after all his tough-guy posing and truthy attack ads in the primaries and since, and his major trick at the moment seems to be to double down on the patrician arrogance:

“The person who knows what’s best for you is standing right in front of you. Take a look.”

“Silly voter, if I give you one tax return, next thing you know you’ll just want another.”

“Obama’s not up to the job, but I’m danged if I’ll give you anything other than my word that I’m better than him, that should be quite enough for anyone.”

I wonder if, with the appropriate research, Romney might have to run away from the Olympics, also, too and have nothing left but….?

Dunno how that would pan out. Maybe we could leave him the Olympics. If his (sketchily) stated policies and obnoxious temperament aren’t enough to sway people ....

Politicians need a certain level of self-assurance, confidence, and ego to become top leaders. But Mitt is way over into “HOW DARE YOU!” territory. “DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM?!” doesn’t win votes, it makes people want to see you take a fall. A big fall.

Romney’s biggest problem is that he’s acting like the boss, when he’s merely a job applicant.

B4, I think I love you, will you marry me?

[Full disclosure: I’m a lesbian]

Excellent question, Vixen . . .

The federal government provided between approximately $400 millionand $600 million of that budget, much of it a result of Romney’s having aggressively lobbied Congress and federal agencies. It would prove to be a record level of federal funding for the staging of a U.S. Olympics. An additional federal $1.1 billion was spent on indirect support in the form of highway and transit projects.

Utah Senator Bob Bennett said that much of the needed federal money was already in place and an analysis by The Boston Globe stated that the committee already had nearly $1 billion in committed revenues. Olympics critic Steve Pace, who led Utahns for Responsible Public Spending, thought Romney exaggerated the initial fiscal state in order to lay the groundwork for a well-publicized rescue.Kenneth Bullock, another board member of the organizing committee and also head of the Utah League of Cities and Towns, often clashed with Romney at the time, and later said that Romney deserved some credit for the turnaround but not as much as he claimed: Bullock said: “He tried very hard to build an image of himself as a savior, the great white hope. He was very good at characterizing and castigating people and putting himself on a pedestal.”

Oh SNAP!  Here’s the Obama response to Romney’s demand for an apology:

Yeah—click that.

Did not come to play around.
