Hang the “fundamentals” around John McCain’s neck

Yesterday I was telling everyone that if the Obama campaign didn’t hammer John McCain for his “fundamentals” gaffe,  I was going to join all of my pals in the Progressive Panic Squad out on the ledge.  In particular, I was insisting that the campaign turn out an ad with the gaffe in it by this morning.

Ta da!

Now it’s time to reward good (and necessarily cut-throat) behavior. Throw some scratch Barack’s way so his team can run this ad over and over in battleground states. We’ve moved well past “It’s the economy, stupid” and onto “It’s the economy, fuckhead!!!” Hang McCain’s “fundamentals” gaffe around his neck and drench the rope in super glue.

MORE: McCain looked flinchy and downright pissed on Morning Joe today and still didn’t have a good answer cued up when Scarborough asked him what the “fundamentals” were. The economy is his Achilles’ heel. It’s time to litter his path with rusty nails.

Yay, that’s what I’m talking about! I didn’t see McBush on Morning Joke, but I did see his attempted lame-ass rebuttal at a campaign stop later yesterday. He was obviously reading a line off a cue card attempting to spin “fundamentals” as American innovation, workers, etc., and to turn it into an insult to hard-working (white) Americans to question the “fundamentals.”

It came off so phony and desperate. I’m sure as soon as the Fox News Barbie stopped chewing Tucker Bounds’ ass yesterday, he immediately dispatched the lame-ass talking points to McSame to try to contain the damage. Too little, too late. I’ll see if I can find the clip.

Yeah, I saw that, too.  It was enough of an embarrassingly transparent stretch as it was, but the fact that he was obviously reading it made it about a hundred times worse.

As it happens, I donated to Obama yesterday, on matching day. It won’t be the last time. Anyway, I did read about that health plan—McCain’s goal is to move 20 million Americans off of employer-based health coverage by taxing us on our health insurance. Apparently, some of us will elect not to have any because it’s too expensive. Those of us who stay with it will be older and less healthy and raise the cost. Eventually, companies will just decide it’s too expensive and abandon the benefit altogether. Scariest thing I’ve read yet.

I won’t keep linking to the diary I wrote on DailyKos about the health plan but I wish they would start picking up that not only is this a tax increase on many Americans (even with the offset of the credit) but also a massive payroll tax increase for employers.  If the premiums are now taxable income to employees they are subject both to income taxes and to FICA taxes.  Employers have to match FICA taxes out of their own pockets.  Result:  massive employer payroll tax increase at the same time.  Millions of small and medium sized businesses are struggling to provide health insurance as it is, with double digit increases in premiums every year.  Add to that a huge payroll tax increase and employer provided health plans could be gone within a year or too.  The grade on this asshat plan:  F.A.I.L.

gone within a year or too

Oops, when I get worked up I don’t preview two, uh, too well.  “gone within a year or two” it should be. :)
