Harmonious Dissonance: Ted Kennedy and Orrin Hatch

The tune isn’t memorable. The sentimental lyrics do not soar. This tribute by songwriting conservative senator Orrin Hatch to his liberal friend is not the cartoonish stock-in-trade of the modern American political circus. But it is a commemoration, not just of Ted Kennedy, but of an idea: that the opposing side is not composed of devils, but fellow citizens, whose worth to the general polity is more than the hollow victory to be gained by demonizing them.

From the YouTube page:

Here is a stirring tribute song to my good friend, Senator Ted Kennedy called ‘Headed Home.’ I wrote this song with the great Phil Springer. Take a moment to listen to the words. You don’t have to agree with everyone’s politics…none of us agree 100% of the time. But you have to admire a lifetime dedicated to public service and improving the lives of others—and that is just one of the many things that made Ted great. I think this song captures a small part of Ted’s legacy of service. Listen to it and see what you think.

That is just about one of the sweetest things I’ve come across in a while. Thanks, Mrs. Polly. I kinda dug the guy’s voice, whoever it is, and I’ll take Hatch’s songwriting over Ashcroft’s any day of the week.

Today, Orrin gets a full-throated “bravo” from yours truly.  Nicely done.

Kevin, I believe that would be Phil Springer singing, and his voice is pretty great.

And yes, Senator Hatch has it all over Ashcroft. His song is from the heart, not just a jingoistic abstraction.

And the fReichtards will denounce Hatch as a Islahomocommietraitor in 5…4…3…
