Health Care Plan Passes House 220-215

From The NY Times:

Handing President Obama a hard-fought victory, the House narrowly approved a sweeping overhaul of the nation’s health care system on Saturday, advancing legislation that the Democrats said could be their defining social policy achievement.

After a daylong clash with Republicans over what has been a Democratic goal for decades, lawmakers voted 220 to 215 to approve a plan that would cost $1.1 trillion over 10 years and that Democrats said would provide relief to Americans struggling to buy or hold on to health insurance. [...]

Democrats were forced to make major concessions on insurance coverage for abortions to attract the final votes to secure passage, a wrenching compromise for the numerous abortion-rights advocates in their ranks. They hope to make changes to that amendment during negotiations with the Senate, which will now become the main battleground in the health care fight as Democrats there ready their own bill for what is likely to be extensive floor debate. [...]

Only one Republican, Representative Anh Cao of Louisiana, voted for the bill, and 39 Democrats opposed it. The House also defeated the Republicans’ more modest plan, whose authors said it was a more common-sense and fiscally responsible approach.

UPDATE: Cao’s vote in particular is driving the wingnuts insane. And that rancid sack o’ tweets RightBloggerPat is keeping ‘em coming...

My Uncle served in Vietnam all he could stab this Country in the back. @samuel @levihenry @kerrence @tonyyeung @paparatti @Yeggo @frautoasty

@tonyyeung That’s because LIBERALS like YOU LIED about the damn war, ya sland-eyed ASSHOLE

I’m really starting to distrust ANYONE of Eastern Descent. 1st it was John Yu, then it was Obama’s guy saying we should repay China.

I’m head fucking serious… Al-Qaeda is not our Worst Enemy. The East is man. China, Japan, Vietnam, all of ‘em. #tcot #hcr #killbill #VTO

Okay. I will admit it… I fucked up on Japan… They weren’t commies. But they did attack America.

Awww, that’s sweet.  He admitted he was wrong about Japan. How terribly honorable of him. Now if we can get him to admit that the correct phrase is “sold down the river,” all is forgiven.

Geraldo on Fox: “What’s that retirement group? AARP, thank you Molly—they never endorsed this bill, did they?”

Calls for violent revolution are up about 750% on FreeRepublic. Whether or not this version of the bill pleases any liberals, it’s triggering a psychotic break on the other side.

Of course, whether these DemonRat whores know it or not

This means WAR…

Not playtime, not “elections have consequences”, not “Well…we won”

WAR.

All the “provisions” we Americans have been buying since October 2008…time to “offer” a sample to those in DC who tax us to death without representation.

Second Amendment believers - ARISE! ARISE and take your country back!

A.A.C.

it’s triggering a psychotic break on the other side.

Wow, that comment was, ummmm, refreshing.

I meant the Freeper’s comment, not yours Strange.

I certainly don’t doubt that one of these wingnut lunatics is going to do something really, really bad in the near future.  Who’s going to be on the receiving end of it is anyone’s guess.

Another Freeper:

One of the things to do after we take over next election is outlaw the Democrat party just like the Nazis were outlawed in Germany.
****
There won’t be a next election…and they know it. The United States of America is gone. The Tea Parties did not scare or concern them in the least..BECAUSE everyone was afraid to look anything but politically correct. Don’t show anger, be nice. How brain washed are we????? It is sad…so sad.

You can’t get more American than one party rule.

@KK—Understood, of course.

BTW, don’t freak over the Stupak Amendment just yet. Not that it isn’t absolutely heinous, but the Red Team consensus seems to be that it was an optical illusion designed to let the Blue Dogs burnish their conservative street-cred on a provision that that will evaporate by the time we get a final bill.

That could turn out to be wishful thinking. But when even the Hard Right calls “Bullshit” instead of gloating over a pro-life “win,” it gives me hope.

Wait, freepers/teatards aren’t only racist against black people like Barack Obama?

WHO KNEW?

Freepers:  We’re SHOCKED, shocked I tell ya!  Who knew a healthcare reform bill was going to pass the house?  Now we have to have an armed revolution!

an optical illusion designed to let the Blue Dogs burnish their conservative street-cred on a provision that that will evaporate by the time we get a final bill.

Please let it be so. Those outlandish creatures at that ludicrous Effluents, or whatever that wacked-out thing is, are planning to go all Lysistrata on the penis-wearers of America, who will surely crumple under the strain of their withdrawn favors.

If only they hadn’t chosen to illustrate the article with a picture of the lower half of an airborne gymnast in a pink leotard, with “CLOSED FOR BUSINESS” in red letters over her very likely quite underaged crotch. It’s a picture only an evil clown could love.

Now all it needs is 115 votes in the Senate!

“What’s that retirement group? AARP, thank you Molly—they never endorsed this bill, did they?”

The Fail is strong in this one.

Who’s going to be on the receiving end of it is anyone’s guess.

I love how every arsehole calling for revolution gives the order to rise up. I’ve yet to see even a hint of “Follow me to the barricades!”

The fRightWing: Too many Keyboard Kommanders, not enough troops.

As for violence because of this. I guess so. But as I’ve said before, in D.C., we’ve got cops for EVERYTHING.

PUMAs withholding sex would be like me withholding my x-ray vision.

Meanwhile, the Stupak amendment is generating nearly the same level of hysteria by the ultra-feminists on Kos.

/just sayin’

Great post, Kevin K. On the subject of “sold up the river” I see this lovely malapropism as part of the general right wing refusal to remember slavery and its horrors.  If you actually remembered the phrase correctly as “sold down the river” you’d have to also remember slavery and you’d be embarrassed to attack Cao (from Louisiana/the end of the river) using this language. Because slavery never really existed, in the right wing imaginary, or was repealled by affirmative action, or something. But my other thought is that maybe its an unconcious statement of a belief that since power has shifted from the south to the north all concessions to federal government/obama/the dems is a symbolic selling “upriver” of the now enslaved right wing.

aimai

i think the freepers had their initial psychotic break back in ‘06 when rove had the math

meanwhile a 5 vote wins - not too goood if you as me when you have an 81 vote majority

but a win is a win, now watch the lieberman changes get pushed thorugh just to king joe on board

Given that final vote tally, remind me again how Lambert thought single-payer could pass?

I think the the five vote margin is a bit misleading because Pelosi probably let some Democrats from more conservative districts vote against the bill because she knew it had enough votes to pass. They’ll probably vote for it when it comes around again, assuming Pelosi needs the votes.

@Iggy—I think that’s a pretty good surmise.

Democrats may be conniving, dishonest reptilians who are utterly divorced from political reality, but I doubt Pelosi would have gone to a dramatic midnight vote unless she was absolutely certain she had a few reserve “Ayes” in her pocket.

Evil? Perhaps. Suicidal? Hardly.

Given that final vote tally, remind me again how Lambert thought single-payer could pass?

You mean if he made an honest attempt to answer such a question rather than just sneering at the questioner? Ha, I know, but if he did the specifics would be incomprehensible, clouded as they would be by a bewildering array of brackets and quotation marks.  The essence would be understood though and would come down to something like, “shut up, that’s how.”

Go back to Japan, Cao! And take all the Indians back to Africa on your way!

Is it wrong of me to want the Freepers to actually try an armed revolt?  Mostly so that we could all enjoy the exact moment they find themselves facing the National Guard, and the trousers of thousand dumb white guys go brown…?

I mean—I know these guys think of themselves as the Founding Fathers reborn, but they’re a lot closer to the Whiskey Rebellion.  Only, less competent.

You’re the one who put it up, lady.

I gather that Bill Owens cast the 218th vote.  Sweet.

You’re the one who put it up, lady.

With the legend “Closed for Business,” right? Suggesting “Snatch For Sale” otherwise. Yeah, nothing demeaning about THAT positioning. Plus, the classic “no head, no distinguishing features, just a pair of legs, groin, and torso” imagery that real feminists have complained about in mainstream advertising for decades. If that had been used to sell “feminine deodorant” or something, they would have been screaming for a Prowl to Teh Wimmen-Lynching Boiz of Mad Avenue.

I guess swearing in two additional Democratic congressmen in time to vote was the most significant outcome of last Tuesday’s elections, now wasn’t it?
