Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Nope. It’s a deflated gasbag!

Or possibly an omen?

Romney blimp turning heads in South Florida
Mitt Romney leads President Obama in latest Florida polls

MIAMI - Flying high in the polls, Mitt Romney was also flying high over the streets of South Florida Friday morning.

A blimp with the headline “America needs Romney” was seen flying over Miami-Dade and Broward counties.

The blimp is the first sign that South Florida will take center stage in the political universe over the next few days.

This evening:

Mitt Romney blimp makes emergency landing near Fort Lauderdale

A blimp-like aircraft emblazoned with an “America Needs Romney” message made an emergency landing near a Davie park this evening, much to the joy of many voters in Broward County, one of the most-liberal places in Florida.

There were no injuries, Davie police said. Except, perhaps, for Republican pride.

The Sun Sentinel adds:

Two people were on the 160 foot aircraft but no one was injured, said Davie police spokesman Capt. Dale Engle.
Engle said high winds forced the aircraft to land in the Parkside Estates development around 7:10 p.m., near the Robert H. Bamford Sports Complex.
...
“The winds were so strong it was pushing them west,” he said. “They were trying to drive east but they couldn’t push into the wind.”

Oh the humanity!

Also: This is apparently from August. Spooky!

Looks like a blimp to me. Otherwise it would be a dirigible, which has a rigid structure & wouldn’t collapse like that on landing.

Anyway, “America Needs Romney” like it needs yet another hole in its already Swiss cheese head.

Looks like a blimp to me. Otherwise it would be a dirigible, which has a rigid structure & wouldn’t collapse like that on landing.

Aiaiaiai. And here was me, having scrabbled round Twitter, trusting the quibbles I read and trying to preempt pedantry! ;O)

OK, I’ll scrub that “isn’t technically a blimp” footnote from the post, and thanks for the correction!

Gah! I give up:

And, though from far away many were certain they saw a blimp, Engle said that wasn’t the case. It’s actually a thermal airship, which looks like a blimp from far away with its round, balloon-like top.

But up close, the lower part of the airship looks very different from a traditional blimp, Engle said.

Crikey, I give up too. Never heard of a “thermal airship.”

Ahhh, Wiki sez it’s more or less a hot air balloon, w/ a burner, as opposed to a blimp which has lighter-than-air gas in it.

Our knowledge is increased.

I think we’re in danger of losing sight of the truly momentous symbolism of this event here. Though the world supply of “hot air” jokes has been exhausted on Twitter already.

Pedantic bastard is pedantic:

Looks like a blimp to me. Otherwise it would be a dirigible, which has a rigid structure & wouldn’t collapse like that on landing.

A dirigible is a steerable lighter-than-air flying machine (it can be “directed”, hence the term).  A zeppelin is a dirigible with a rigid skeleton, a blimp is a dirigible without a rigid skeleton.  A thermal airship is a vessel full of hot air that goes down before it finishes the course, much like Mitt Romney will be.

Oh, the humanity!

“As God is my witness, I thought turkeys could fly.”

Had to take the interstate south for an errand this morning and there, hanging above us all, was a tethered blimp shaped balloon with “We need Romney” or some such.  Having read this earlier I couldn’t stop the fit of giggles it gave me.  It was still intact on the way back - shoot.

And, yes, I very much hope the deflated gasbag incident is indeed an omen!
