Kyl Clarifies: Spending Must Always be Offset; Tax Cuts (for the Wealthy) Never
Via Ezra.
AZ Senator Jon Kyle speaking on FoxNews on Sunday makes it clear that, in his view, Congressional spending on stuff like, oh, extending unemployment benefits for the millions of unemployed, must always be offset by cuts elsewhere. Cutting taxes, though, and especially cutting taxes for the wealthy, why, that’s different! Here he is:
I’m just an accountant by profession so maybe my math’s not that good, but isn’t the net result on the deficit of increased spending or decreased revenues exactly the same? Yet Kyl says in his own words that “you should never have to offset cost of a deliberate decision to reduce tax rates on Americans.”
But who really thinks that it’s average Josephine Americans that he’s talking about here. Kyl’s record reflects that he’s never passed up a chance to cut taxes for the wealthy. Eliminating the estate tax, cutting taxes on capital gains and dividends and retaining cutbacks on income taxes for people making more than $250,000. These are the people who deserve breaks in our country, and there’s no reason to expect that these breaks need to be paid for.
So the Republican line here seems to be that the Party’s got your back if you’re wealthy but middle class and unemployed Americans are on their own.
