L’Affaire Edwards

So the National Enquirer was right – John Edwards did have a cheesy affair with a third-rate filmmaking floozy. Color me shocked. Not. I’ve always thought Edwards was an opportunistic phony – a DLC tool when that was all the rage, a war supporter when that was politically convenient and a war opponent when that became the popular stance.

It seems he was just as fickle in his private life. I’d like to brush it off and say that if Edwards can’t keep his pecker zipped up, that’s his wife’s business, not mine. But it’s not as simple as that. The jackass could have jeopardized the Democratic Party’s chances at a critical juncture in history. What if he’d won the nomination before this bombshell exploded? This makes it more than just a private matter.

He lied about the affair and went into the primaries knowing the media was sniffing around. Did he honestly believe he would get away with it? I guess so, but the willingness to take that risk says something about the man.

And there’s this: Edwards paid his side salad something like $115K for a few YouTube videos that a moderately intelligent chimpanzee could have produced on a reasonably well-equipped computer. If I had been one of his supporters who contributed money, I’d feel pretty fleeced right about now. What a dickhead.

I’m disappointed too but did you see the headline at HUFFPO? Bragging they were the first to report and basically having a PUMA-fest. Fine- John Edwards screwed up but why do we have to skin, saute and sauce our own. Don’t the freepers do a good enough job? I think being “fair” and barbecuing our own is over rated.

I think everyone’s overreacting. This is not the end of the Democratic party or Obama’s chances in November. What everyone forgets is that the Edwards family handled this privately two years ago. It’s past news dredged up to piss you off. That’s all this is.

Edwards is a flake. I thought so in ‘04 but came around to listen to him in ‘06. When he announced the ‘wife is ill’ I thought the timing made it seem gratuitous.  Nonetheless, I came to admire his speeches about poverty and helping the disadvantaged. This latest episode, however, brings it all back to the beginning. Edwards is a charlatan and we need to expunge him from the ranks. Let the loser earn his forgiveness by doing volunteer work to help the needy. We don’t need him in politics. And make that a big headline on Huffpo, or anywhere. Edwards can only hurt Democrats now. He is useless to the cause.

It’s amazing how, after Edwards has admitted that he was having the affair, that suddenly there is nobody in the whole country who ever supported him.  How’d that happen?
