Make it so
Where we see Congressional Dems as a jellyfish folded over in a spineless approximation of a defensive crouch, National Review’s Benjamin Zycher detects a cunning claque of Machiavellians moving stealthily toward the real Crown Jewel of Socialism that Rep. Bachmann prophetically foretold—an honest-to-god Big Gummint takeover of 1/6th of the US economy:
I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it again: We are not out of the woods. It is wholly possible, and perhaps even likely, that the Dems will now turn to a limited version of health-care legislation designed and labeled as “insurance reform” — that is, sharp limitations on underwriting combined with guaranteed-issue and no-cancellation regulations.
In other words, no denial of coverage based on medical condition. This would yield a massive adverse-selection problem: No one would sign up for coverage until they developed expensive medical conditions. Even accident victims would be invited to sign up for “insurance” — shifting their known costs onto others — as they were wheeled into the emergency rooms. This, of course, would destroy the private-insurance sector, leaving only government to fill the void. Voila! Single-payer by stealth.
The beauty part? For once, the Democrats could use the average voters’ ignorance, short attention span and inability to digest anything more complex than bumper sticker slogans to their advantage:
Public-opinion polls show overwhelming support for such regulations, and Republicans in Congress would be hard-pressed to oppose them. But oppose them they must, for this path would lead inexorably to the nirvana of health-care socialism that the Left has been dreaming about for decades. It is our responsibility to provide congressional Republicans with the requisite education.
Hahahaha! Good luck with that “education” shit, pal. You and yours have trafficked in ignorance and fear to your own advantage and the country’s detriment throughout this entire process—screaming about death panels for Baby Trig and Grandma while the grown-ups tried to “educate” the public on the reality of our untenable health care situation.
How sweet it would be to see the shoe on the other goddamned foot for a change. And what a bracing sight it would be to witness insurance fat cats spending millions promoting the type of bill they just spent a year and millions of dollars trashing. Of course, this will never happen because it makes entirely too much sense.
