McCain’s Pork Schtick

First McCain is caught pastorbaiting in public, and now he’s on tape yanking his pork schtick—only this time he indirectly links a hockey mom to a bridge collapse in Minnesota:

First watch this awesome TPM produced clip (about one minute):

Then watch McCain go ballistic:

“Maybe if we had done it right, maybe some of that money would have gone to inspect those bridges and other bridges around the country,” McCain said at a campaign stop in Ankeny, Iowa on Aug. 4, 2007. “Maybe the 200,000 people who cross that bridge every day would have been safer than spending $233 million of your tax dollars on a bridge in Alaska to an island with 50 people on it.”

How many people died in the 35W bridge collapse? How many infrastructure dollars per capita has Alaska sucked out of the system for their own pork? ANSWER: Per capita, they have sucked out more than any other state.

The hits, they just keep a’comin.  This is just getting ridiculous at this point.  Yoo-hoo, traditional media, it is time to wake up.

Scan these headlines ... they might be catching on.

Not drip, drip, drip. More like gush, gush, gush.

Slowly but surely the truth comes out. Problem is, we have only 50-some days to truth-check Palin, and the media is gonna stick to the sideshow stuff, no matter how many Maddow’s they put on the teevee.

McCain wants these distractions, he needs them, and he knew by picking Palin it would distract from his own disastrous legislative history.

I think Olbermann might be right, that Obama’s big moves might be during the debate period. The lies might come back to haunt Palin and McCain then.

The lies might come back to haunt Palin and McCain then.

That’s not going to happen before, during or after a debate, that can only happen when the media, where most folks get their information, call out the lies for what they are.

Debates are going to be spun like spider webs no matter the outcome, just go back and watch Gore vs. Bush, Kerry vs. Bush, hell, Alan Keyes vs. Bush, and tell me how effective they were.

There is only one solution—in two parts. The Obama campaign keeps hammering the Republicans for their bullshit and the media picks up on it and reports it. so far, all I’ve seen both from right and left wing blogs is a bunch of hand-wringing about how sexist the atackls on Palin have been. It’s bullshit, but when you call out Jane Hamsher on her bullshit, even the lefty blogs get to moderating comments.

I saw your comment yesterday (or was it earlier today?) about getting censored at FDL. I never became accustomed to the comment section there and gave up trying. The signal to noise ratio was always high (or is it low) and too hard to get an intelligent thread going. Don’t know if it’s true today since I haven’t been back there in probably two years, but they used to call it the swamp. As a side note, I did meet Jane once and enjoyed a cup of coffee with her. She is quite charming. (At least when she’s not moderating comments! )

Here’s a great site for state-by-state data on federal money disbursements. And here’s a post I did about the Palin hyposcrisy: More Likely Than Not, You’re Funding Sarah Palin’s Gubernatorial Snottiness.

Nice post, Grace; thanks for the links!
