Missouri Prop C vote devastating refudiation of Obama, health care reform!

Well, that’s the spin. But I think Mistermix over at Balloon Juice gets it exactly right—it’s yet another demonstration that people want to have their cake and eat it too. Look at the ballot language (full text here):

Shall the Missouri Statutes be amended to:

• Deny the government authority to penalize citizens for refusing to purchase private health insurance or infringe upon the right to offer or accept direct payment for lawful healthcare services?
• Modify laws regarding the liquidation of certain domestic insurance companies?

Duh! No one likes government mandates. But do you suppose they would have voted to restore the insurance companies’ rights to deny coverage due to preexisting conditions? Nope.

The GOP will demagogue the mandates issue to exploit people’s ignorance and fear. It’s what they do on every issue. No surprise there.

Also unsurprising is the fact that the media don’t make it clear that the ballot initiative singled out the most unpalatable measure—without which the popular parts don’t work—and failed to educate readers on that caveat. It’s what they don’t do (i.e., their motherfucking jobs).

That proposition is such a disingenuous twisting of words, I’m surprised anybody voted “No.”

Fortunately, it’s just more pointless, Teabaggy window-dressing. These 10th Amendment challenges aren’t likely to get very far…especially when some of thee states realize how broke they are, and start looking to DC for help.
