Humboldt, Temple Grandin is great! She is the subject of Oliver Sacks’ An Anthropologist on Mars (her description of herself, a highly accomplished woman with Asperger’s). She wrote a really fascinating book on animal behavior, Animals in Translation.

Among other things, she examines the mess humans are making of animals by breeding for specific traits, despite the woeful side-effects. Example: Turkeys who are in pain from having legs which can’t support their weight, and will choose bad-tasting feed with painkillers over good feed without.

She loves cows—she identifies with them. She empathizes with them as prey animals. Yet she designs slaughterhouses—humane slaughterhouses. She said something like “being knocked on the head is a lot better than having your throat torn out by a lion.”

But something caught my eye in the article you linked to—something ominous:
