My, Those Republicans Sure Don’t Like Hearing That They Voted to End Medicare!

As a result they are trying to strong arm a New Hampshire TV station and Comcast into pulling this ad.

Their complaint? That the ad is NOT TRUE, dagnabbit!!  And they are very butthurt about it!  An excerpt from the nasty letter they wrote:

The Budget Resolution as approved by the U.S. House of Representatives does NOT end Medicare. In fact, the Budget Resolution makes no changes at all to Medicare for current or near retirees, as none of the Medicare-related provisions in the Budget Resolution would even take effect until 2022.  This fact makes the Advertisement especially misleading, as the woman featured in the Advertisement is a current Medicare beneficiary, and would not have her Medicare benefits ended, or even changed in any way, under the Budget Resolution.

The emphasis is theirs.  The foot stomping and spittle flecking you’ll have to insert on your own.

It should also be noted that the woman in the ad does not say or even imply that her  Medicare benefits will be ended; she says the legislation will hurt families like hers.  A completely undeniable statement.

When the controversy first came to light some were concerned that if the Rethugs succeeded in getting the ad pulled it could hurt Democratic efforts to make Medicare an issue in the elections next year.  Not to worry.  Comcast weighed the opinions of both sides and has decided to continue running the ad.

Very effective ad!

We can only hope to see many more like this, when it really matters, next fall.

I agree.  I especially like the part at the end where she says she voted for Bass several times but “Charlie Bass has changed.”  How many people are thinking that about their trusty Republican Congress People now that the Tea Party is dictating their agenda?

I think a lot, but definitely not all, of Republicans are aware that the Ryan “plan” is meant to only affect people under 55 now, but they rely so heavily on Medicare, that any sort of threats against it seems like a personal attack to them.  Threatening to take away Medicare is almost like threatening a family member, a caretaker.  Even though *I* won’t be affected, how dare you jeopardize the lives of my children!  That kinda thing, ya know?

If everyone is so freaked out about money they need to bring all the troops home, and cut defense by a shockingly freakish percentage.  Then all will be right with the world, and the Medicare-is-going-bankrupt jargon will be a thing of the past.  :)

It will end Medicare once every one now 55 or older has passed to their eternal reward.

On the other hand, good that Comcast (alleged to be more right-wing than many other corporate entities) decided to take the money & keep running it.

Great ad.  I, too, loved the ending.  “I voted for him five times, but no more, bitchez.”

Wah wah wah how DARE the Dems tell the truth and stay on message?

Defensive lot, aren’t they?

Seniors are also suspicious of a divide and conquer strategy such as the “hey people over 55 now, not to worry!”, and are thinking that once a change like Ryan’s plan goes through, their benefits are next in line for attention.  Rightly so in my opinion; Ryan’s plan isn’t the ultimate goal, it’s just a start.

They are already putting this into action for Medicaid since it is a state by state block grant system, and dickheads like Scott in FL or Christie in NJ will/are taking that new autonomy and slashing funding.  After all, their masters have created the impression that only those of a dusky hue with Caddies and baby production machinery use Medicaid.  I wonder how the folks who are relying on Medicaid to pay for mom or dad’s nursing home care are going to react once they see what’s in the works?

Seniors are also suspicious of a divide and conquer strategy such as the “hey people over 55 now, not to worry!

Seniors I have talked to find it offensive, as if the Republicans just want them to die quickly so they can get on with screwing everybody else.

Since seniors frightened by Fox News lies got us the lunatic teabaggers controlling the House, maybe genuinely scared seniors will help us get rid of them.

Are you sure you’re not talking about a Vons commercial?

Exactly!  This is a key part of the formula that needs to be drilled home in every local add.  Insert Local GOP medicare-killing congress-critter here….

Rightly so IMHO too. You really hit the nail on the head of where they really want to go…

That would be a delicious and deserving irony, wouldn’t it?  We can only hope.

Face it, if the GOP loses the senior citizen vote…they are totally fucked!

I think the GOP has gotten too smug and comfortable in being able to fleece the gullible and convince them to vote against their own interests.

They’ve forgotten that they have to make their BS at least sound like some enticing Nigerian scam instead of openly smile while telling people they want to slit their throats….

We should mark 2011 down in history as the year that they’ve actually jumped the shark so far that the average person finally takes notice…
