Obama’s presser

It’s a good thing Obama didn’t talk about anything important in his press conference tonight. Lynn Sweet derailed the whole goddamned thing by asking about the Gates arrest.

UPDATE: As Steve M at No More Mister Nice Blog notes, the conventional wisdom among the press corp is now etched in stone, as typified by Politico hack Ben Smith:

He never detailed his own plan, or named a single victim of America’s broken system, and he spoke largely in the abstractions of blue pills, red pills, and legislative processes.

Jesus God, did we watch the same press conference? Obama didn’t provide details like a prescription formulary and dependent beneficiary criteria—because the plan is still being hashed out! And what about this?

So let me be clear: This isn’t about me. I have great health insurance, and so does every Member of Congress. This debate is about the letters I read when I sit in the Oval Office every day, and the stories I hear at town hall meetings. This is about the woman in Colorado who paid $700 a month to her insurance company only to find out that they wouldn’t pay a dime for her cancer treatment – who had to use up her retirement funds to save her own life. This is about the middle-class college graduate from Maryland whose health insurance expired when he changed jobs, and woke up from emergency surgery with $10,000 in debt.

Those sound like examples of specific victims of the broken system to me. Does Smith want Social Security numbers and addresses? Maybe. But what he and the rest of the press corp really seem to crave is performance art. They don’t give a shit about policy. They want carrier landings and flight suits. God help us.

Well, Obama should know what happened, since he and Gates are both black. Black people break into houses all the time, and laugh about how they did it when they think white people aren’t listening. For all intents and purposes, Obama “broke into” the White House by winning more votes than anyone else. And how did he get away with it? Because white people weren’t listening. Ipso facto, QED. I rest my case.

However, Gates made a dumb mistake breaking into the home of a Harvard professor. Did he think the police would actually believe he “lived there”? Get serious.

I sure hope Gates gave the cops a picture of his “Certification of Driver’s License” from the State of Hawaii. Ha-ha. Man, you give one of those people a suit and a desk, and the rest of them start acting like bosses. What a world.

Health Care Reform? Yeah, I heard something about that. I guess it’s a “big deal.”

LOL, StrangeAppar8us. LOL.

After all, a man’s home is his castle.

A man’s health insurance is his hassle.

Who cares about the hassle.

Mitch McConnell says we have the best health care in the world ? They are concerned about rationed health care and that’s what we have now. If you live in TN or VA, this is what is called quality health care.

Remote Area Medical ( RAM ) will visit Wise County, VA again, people go to the fair grounds and line up in the hot July sun to see a doctor ! If we have the best health care in the world this wouldn’t be going on.

Lynn Sweet derailed the whole goddamned thing by asking about the Gates arrest.

It’s not Sweet’s job to make Obama’s job easy for him or even to ask him only on topic questions.  But re: your image from CNN, it was the CNN editor’s choice to emphasize the question and answer regarding Gates.

I certainly hope you are being facetious…....

Anon & Jared: Please report to the Remedial Irony Detection Facility immediately. We can help.

@anon
No you are right, and the reporter’s question was fine and Obama’s answer was fine. See the complete answer here:

And yeah, I think everyone is saying that the CNN editor has very poor news judgment, along with the entire gaggle of trite, superficial, overprivileged cable thumbsuckers.

I just want to thank Betty for posting so I didn’t have to keep looking at the upside-down mouth puppets.

She’s just upset that Obama likes bloggers better.

You say that now, but when someone emails you a link to the video you’re gonna be, like, oh yeah, i love that video.  I saw it weeks ago.

You watch, Terry.  You just watch.

He never [...] named a single victim of America’s broken system

One of the numbskulls on Morning Joke made a similar observation this morning. I guess Obama needed to drag an uninsured person with terminal cancer out on the stage and start screaming, “This person is going to DIE!!!!”

@Jared Hyder—Yep, I was just channeling the typical response to the press conference at my neighborhood bar:

1. Anger that Obama pre-empted World Heavyweight Midget Strangling
2. Confusion as to why Obama and another black man were breaking into a Harvard professor’s home, and why the police didn’t just arrest Obama and send him back to Indonesia for being a Marxist
3. Deep concern that Obama looked “wired-up on something” and appeared to be loitering nervously around the podium, as if waiting for a victim
4. Astonishment that Obama is shutting down all the hospitals so that medical care will only be available at Mosques and Health Rationing Death-Farms operated by FEMA
5. Nostalgia for Jack Webb, John Wayne and “nice” black people like “Benson”

Good christ, guess who’s on Dylan “Hawk Face” Ratigan’s show right now? Andrew ... Dice ... Clay. Yay media!

Does Smith want Social Security numbers and addresses?

Countertops.  He didn’t supply any information on their countertops.  How can we even discuss their health coverage until we are sure they don’t have an inappropriate countertop?

This is about the woman in Colorado who paid $700 a month to her insurance company only to find out that they wouldn’t pay a dime for her cancer treatment – who had to use up her retirement funds to save her own life. billy beat me to it, but:

Don’t worry - Malkin’s on the case!

I actually signed up at Politico to post that paragraph where he gave specific examples. Waste of time, judging by the bottom-feeding, mouthbreathing “ha ha ur mesiah sux! Socileesm sux” crowd that is in the majority there.

They don’t give a shit about policy. They want carrier landings and flight suits. God help us.

You’re right—it sucks. But if those are the ground rules, maybe it would help for him to bow to the inevitable and bring the schmaltz—or bring the outrage.  He doesn’t attack anyone, because his ideal is to have everyone at the table.  It might help if he pulled an FDR and turned the enemies of this into Mr. Potter (not J.K. Rowling’s Potter, but Frank Capra’s).

I guess Obama needed to drag an uninsured person with terminal cancer out on the stage and start screaming, “This person is going to DIE!!!!”

The right-wing version of this always works for the Republicans.  Babies dragged from incubators, anyone?

It’d make for good theatre.  Maybe we should pressure the White House to start doing show and tell.

WELL I THINK WE CAN SEE THE DIFFERANCE BETWEEN OBAMA AND BILL CLINTON HERE.  WHEN ICE CUBE RELEASED HIS SONG ‘COP KILLERS’ PREZ CLINTON RIGHTLY CRITICIZED HIM.

BUT WHEN PROFESSAR HENRY LEWIS GATES STARTS SCREAMING ‘COP KILLERS’ WELL OBAMA SAYS ‘WELL I DEFINATELY AGREE WITH PROF GATES.’

WELL GATES IS LIKE THE IRAQIS, A TOTAL INGRATE TO ARE BOYS IN UNIFORM.

BUT WHEN PROFESSAR HENRY LEWIS GATES STARTS SCREAMING ‘COP KILLERS’ WELL OBAMA SAYS ‘WELL I DEFINATELY AGREE WITH PROF GATES.’

Except for the part where that didn’t happen.

STOP FUCKING YELLING.

I call Poe on original ordinary guy or whatever he is.  I think he’s a character blogger.

Thank you for your blog post on this, Betty Cracker!

My wife and I agree with you 1000% on this.  We were beginning to feel that we were the only ones who felt this way, after hearing some of the on-air commentary and reading various news reports and blog comments afterwards.  Good for Krugman!

It felt like WTF? Did people watch the same news conference and answers that we did?

And oh yeah, Lynn Sweet is a total ratfucker on this one.  She knows damn well if that any commentary or questions about the Gates arrest would steal the headline.  Greedy fuck!  The whole press conference was about health care and almost every other question was at least on-topic.  It is like the asshole who derails the comments on a blog post by trying to change the subject to something completely unrelated.  Obama was kind enough to announce he would take one more question and she uses it to ratfuck him!

She knew full well what she was doing and that the media, which is more interested than encouraging infotainment and ginned up controversy than reporting actual factual news would eat it up and be all over it.

Health care is an extremely important need and issue in this country and Lynn Sweet is fucking all of us over by taking the focus off of something that really matters in order to hog the spotlight. Shame on her!
