Yes, “dumb hick” John Cornyn just brought up “wise Latina” again ... ugh.

I’m not sure I understand the GOP strategy here. If they’re trying to put down a marker for future SC nominees, they’re doing a piss-poor job of it.

Otherwise, they’re just reinforcing the negative stereotype of the GOP as the party of white male privilege.

The Republicans do understand they’re having problems with Hispanic voters these days, don’t they? Do they really think they need to solidify their hold on the white knuckledragger demo? I don’t get what they think they’ll accomplish by hammering away at this.  I guess they’re looking for her to slip up, but it’s an enormous risk.

Do Republicans care about anything but fetuses, guns and discrimination against white dudes? Apparently not.

Actually, Kevin and Betty, key Republican strategist and deep-thinker on race in America Pat Buchanan thinks the winning strategy for the GOP is dialing the white resentment factor up from its current 11 to seven million.

I won’t link to him, but Yglesias lays out Buchanan’s argument rather clearly…

Uh-oh.  Looks like Tom Coburn has some ‘splaining to do.

Oy. That would be pretty harmless under most circumstances, but when your party has spent the last few days trying to portray the nominee as some sort of Latina supremacist, well, not so much… Maybe next time a questioner brings up “Wise Latina” (in other words, the next time a GOP senator opens his yap), Sotomayor should say:

Hey, we’ve all said things that can be misinterpreted. Earlier today, Mr. Coburn went all Babalu on me. I could have made the assumption that he’s an insensitive bigot who is unable to look at me without thinking about bongo drums and pidgin English. But I take a more charitable view. As should you all.

OMG, if you haven’t seen Stephen Colbert’s take on the Sotomayor hearings you HAVE to check this out, http://www.colbertnation.com/the-colbert-report-videos/ 233529/july-14-2009/senator-wences-questions-sonia-sotomayor .
