Open thread - Taking refuge in trivia

Taking a break from checking my alerts every .3 seconds.

Did you know the Wizard of Oz is 73 71 (thanks zhak) years old today?

Share your trivia below. Trust me, it’s better than running outside for a smoke every 5 minutes.

Back in five minutes.

(You can also place bets on when Walker will end the suspense which is killing everyone daid.)

(2.33 EDT - Various Tweets state the ruling will be out closer to Noon PDT (3.00 EDT).)

(3.04 EDT - Judge Walker waiting for the first head to explode…)

(3.15 EDT - I’m hearing the rumors, trying to confirm. Before I drop dead.)

That there’s a LAW against having contact with aliens? ..If the government has no knowledge of aliens, then why does Title 14, Section 1211 of the Code of Federal Regulations, implemented on July 16, 1969, make it illegal for U.S. citizens to have any contact with extraterrestrials or their vehicles?

OK, this is theater queen trivia, but…

There’s a production of Funny Girl playing here in Sacramento this week, and I just realized that the first act of Wicked is cloned from Funny Girl.  The arc of Elphaba from awkward girl unsure of how to use her talents (When I’m With the Wizard/I’m the Greatest Star) to a defiant act-one closer in which she rejects the counsel of her friends and defies gravity (Defying Gravity/Don’t Rain on My Parade) is identical to that of Fanny Brice.

Did anybody notice how much O Brother, Where Art Thou owed to the W of O? Besides the Ku Klux Klan/Witches’s Castle scene? The golden field/poppy scene, for instance.

Joe.My.God. has a live feed of San Francisco City Hall, where everybody is gathering to possibly get married! Talk about butterflies.

Considering the quality of NOM’s “Evidence? Who needs that?” legal work, I’m betting on a lot of bouquets being thrown shortly.

71 yrs, not 73.

& it didn’t open for reals a couple weeks after (it was reviewed in Time mag the 3rd wk in August, I believe).

Awesome movie though.

I’m betting on a lot of bouquets being thrown shortly.

I only found their filing earlier today and was too jittery to give it a full read but:

1. The people have spoken, leave Prop. 8 alone (Walker addressed that).
2. Concern trolling for the poor gays who might get married between now and the appeal (Um. Fuck you).
3. Only straight couples can have babies without help so marriage = 1 man & 1 woman (Walker addressed THAT).
4. There’s no harm in not letting gay couples marry (ditto).

I’ll say this. The one thing you do NOT want to do is present a judge with arguments he’s already addressed. This will irritate him.

And now, it is 11.56 PDT. The NoCal website has been down for about 10 minutes.

That man had better issue some LETHAL legal prose.

There’s a Ryder rental van constantly getting in the way of the UStream live shot, which for some reason has its camera across the street. PLOT, perhaps?

I wish I could keep two windows open at once, without my computer getting all ‘splodey!

Every time they cheer for that damn bus, I get fooled into thinking it happened.

Couple of conservative signs: A MORAL WRONG CANNOT BE A CIVIL RIGHT and RESIST JUDICIAL TYRANNY.

Though they might not be conservative (or liberslobian); What is more wrong than denying citizens their pursuit of happiness? Or more tyrannical?

Poor oppressed Christofascists, having gay marriage, what? Forced on their consciousnesses?

2. Concern trolling for the poor gays who might get married between now and the appeal (Um. Fuck you).

Don’t laugh that one off so easily. Our local weekly did a nice profile of local gay couples who are truly tired of the back and forth between married-un-married and they find it insulting and tiresome. The gist is that folks just aren’t going to go crazy with the re-marrying thing this time around.

Poor reporter seems to be the last to know, but San Fran City Hall people are cheering.

LIFTED! Via Joe.

Source is twitter?  I dunno.  Nothing on the page.

I can’t confirm yet either and if I keep hitting the refresh button on the six pages I have open I’m gonna break it.

I am so sorry. NOT lifted. Joe.My.God jumped the gun. It’s extended until Aug 18. The ruling is here.

OK, so it is good news after all, just a dream delayed a few more days. Never mind me; just a case of wedding whiplash.
