Place revenge dish in microwave; set on “defrost”

There are a number of theories on Lieberman’s motives for gutting the health care reform bill—he’s a spiteful prick; he’s an insurance lackey; he’s a wizened, whiny prima donna; he’s all-of-the-above. Whatever.

I don’t want to waste another goddamned minute psychoanalyzing Joe Lieberman. The end result is the same: We are fucked over but good by that smarmy worm. Again.

I also don’t care anymore what the president or Democratic caucus plan to do about Lieberman’s naked perfidy in this fight because it’s clear to me that it will be this: FUCK ALL. The senate is famously clubby, and if you ask me, there’s not enough “club” in that clubbiness. But nobody asked me.

Although nobody in office gives a damn what liberals think, MoveOn.org does. I received an email from MoveOn at 5:47 yesterday evening with a subject line that read simply “Lieberman.” It was a plea for donations to help take Holy Joe down. It appeared with this graph:

image

They had reached 89% of their goal of raising $400K by the time I saw the message. I kicked in $5.

Later yesterday evening, I checked again, and they had upped the ante to $500K:

And reached 96% of that second goal.

I checked again this morning:

image

The new goal is $750K, and they had reached 86% of that before I had my second cup of coffee.

I just checked again, and here’s the new graph:

image

They’re at 66% of $1M.

A few hundred thousand here and there, and pretty soon you’re talking about serious money. According to the New York Times, Lieberman has received $1M in campaign contributions from the insurance industry—since 1998. MoveOn is on track to raise that by lunch time today.

In yesterday’s Lieberman-is-a-prick thread, Kevin said, “The only good news I see coming out of this mess is that a large chunk of the media/punditry seems to have finally realized what a vindictive, petty little shit Lieberman is.”

I think he’s right. Attention whore that Lieberman is, he, like Balloon Boy Dad before him, appears to be learning that not all publicity is good. Watch him stammer through a post-hoc justification for his Medicare buy-in flip-flop here. He doesn’t seem to be enjoying that exchange, does he?

So buck up, fellow libs: Lieberman has won the battle. If we’re honest, we’ll have to admit he’s won the whole fucking war. But he’s mewling about running in 2012 already—GOP? Independent? O, whatever will he do, a breathless nation wonders?

But beneath all the coy bullshit, what this means is that he still wants something. Which means he can be denied if we stay focused. The revenge casserole is wrapped in plastic layers and placed in the deep freeze. But the thought of listening to Lieberman’s concession speech keeps me warm.

Fuck 2012.  I want to start hearing about progressives organizing against moderate GOP candidates next year.  Those of us with time and money need to do everything in our power to get the teabag nominees on the November ballot, especially in those crucial senate races.

We get 62-32 dems in the Senate, and Mr. Liebermann is Mr. Irrelevant.

Pumalicious, Florida is with you. Moderate GOP guv and current sentate candidate Charlie Crist is now tied with teabagger Marco Rubio, who was at one time down something like 30 points. The downside is that the Dem candidate isn’t exactly setting the world on fire, so we might end up with Senator Teabag.

CT Dems won’t have Lieberman, so it’s either the GOP or another independent run in ‘12. I think he’s toast either way.

Need to keep an eye on the PA Senate race. To my mind, Specter is about as trustworthy as Lieberman.

I’ve watched a few of Rubio’s speeches on YouTube and he scares me. He’s a full-on wingnut, but he’s got a natural, smart, conversational style about him and connects well with people. He isn’t a incurious dumbass like Palin. I can definitely see him appealing to independents who don’t look too closely at his politics.

Specter may not be trustworthy, but based on the appearances I’ve seen lately, the man definitely knows who butters his bread.  I don’t see him bucking the party line anytime soon.

Are there any ethics rules in place to keep Lieberman from popping up on the board at Aetna within a nanosecond of leaving office?

I’m afraid this is one of those questions that answers itself.

He’s a full-on wingnut, but he’s got a natural, smart, conversational style about him and connects well with people.

He’s not hard to look at either. I’m seriously considering donating some money to Crist because Rubio could definitely spell trouble for FL, and as a young, handsome, not-dumb, charismatic wingnut from a swing state, trouble for America down the road. Be very afraid.

Mrs. P, I suspect Lieberman will end up in a lobbying firm or board somewhere. I don’t think he could have won even before he showed his ass so dramatically in the health care fight, and it’s difficult to imagine the latest histrionics improved his position.

Here’s an interesting tidbit from TPM:

A Senate Democratic Chief of Staff weighs in ...

I don’t pretend to know Joe Lieberman’s motivation, but it’s working to perfection if his goal is to divide Party leaders (Obama, Reid, etc.) from the Democratic progressive base. I don’t remember seeing this level of outrage from movement progressives before, and I wonder if the only possible way to quell it is to secure Snowe’s vote for reform and then remove Lieberman from his chairmanship. I’m not necessarily advocating that, but many people (including many on the Hill) believe that he is playing us for chumps (not waiting for the CBO score of the Medicare buy-in, opposing something he advocated a couple of months ago), and there need to be consequences. It’s not an easy decision, though, and I don’t envy Reid.

I still say they’d do fuck-all, but this is further evidence of the scale of the damage. Even if Lieberdouche wanders off into the sunset with a fat Aetna gig, such a send-off would have to ding that enormous ego. Cold comfort, that, but we take the crumbs we can get.

I challenge Lieberman to a round of Roshambo.

I really am more pissed at Lieberman than the Blue Dogs. A case could be made for Lincoln, Landrieu, Nelson et al being from red-to-purple states where they actually could face blowback from constituents (I think that blowback is gravely overstated and Ben Nelson is still a preening little turd, but whatever). However, Lieberman only faced blowback from CT Dem voters BECAUSE of his warmongering, and he knows he can’t win statewide again (at least, I would hope he can’t, but who the fuck knows).

So yes—this isn’t about advancing his career or saving his ass in the Senate. He is purely a vindictive little shitstain on the drawers of history.

I say we attach single-payer to an appropriations bill for aid to Israel.

Oh, geez, Allan. Wouldn’t it be more satisfying to name the Aetna execs enemy combatants?
