(via Steve Benen, who is still trapped on The World’s Oldest Blog Platform):

The GOP has been getting a lot of bad press recently, but Republicans in Congress are convinced that it’s not because of their obstruction or lack of ideas. Rather, they say, it’s all the media’s fault.

As reported by Newsmax [Rhymes with Tampax. Coincidence? -ed.], House Republicans are set to form a new caucus devoted to fighting “liberal media bias.” The group will be led by Texas Rep. Lamar Smith, who calls media bias “the greatest threat to our democracy today.”

So, to review:

Imaginary boogeys like anti-Republican media bias = Greatest threat to democracy EVAR. (And I thought it was letting two consenting adults get hitched. Or maybe it was brown people. Brown people getting hitched ... Women showing their ears? I forget.)

Republican members of Congress thinking of ways to strong arm the media into being “fair” in order to defend democracy = One exploded DickHeadDetector.

Told you to unplug it.

(via Media Matters):

...the Media Fairness Caucus will point out unfair stories, meet with members of the media, and write op-eds and letters to the editor to highlight media bias.

Op-eds and letters to the editor will be written on paper made from pulped copies of the Constitution of the United States of America.

good - they can start with Fox.

Oh, LIBERAL media bias.

They can write all the letters they want but if the audience doesn’t want to see what the rightwing wants them to broadcast they won’t get their way.

I wrote to CNN a few years ago to tell them I used to watch daily but since they had degenerated to fluff and rightwing spin I stopped watching.  Not until enough people stopped watching did they start to dial it back (somewhat).

The Fairness Doctrine always struck me as a textbook example of Democratic ineptitude at framing—-the name itself sounds like whining. But this is some next-level shit.

Robert Smith of The Cure would read that and think “man the fuck up, you wuss.”
