PUMAs in Denver: Taking issue with the issues

Just found this on Flickr from NPR’s “The Takeaway”:

The streets of Denver have a lot of people out and protesting… and a very large, very visible police presence. Most of the protesters I’ve seen so far have been on the left - anti-war, anti-Bush, with a sprinkling of Nader supporters. I’ve seen one pro-McCain group (eliciting surprisingly little overt response from what seems a largely Democratic crowd) and a pair of pro-Hillary PUMAs. I asked them what it meant to them that Hillary was encouraging her supporters to vote for Obama. “I think she’s putting the issues before herself,” said one, “but I won’t.”

And then I found this photo from tbergen12:

I’m guessing those are the same two women Hirsch ran into.  That’s the egregiously awful PUMA PAC logo on the woman’s sign on the right.

Roar.

There’s nothing hotter than grandma in gladiator sandals.

I think she’s putting the issues before herself,” said one, “but I won’t

Irony!

a pair of pro-Hillary PUMAs

I wonder if they’re still connected by the Internet, since that what Darragh said binds the PUMAs together.

“Hi, we’re here for the Revolution. We were told there’d be ‘punch and pie.’”

“I think she’s putting the issues before herself,” said one, “but I won’t.”

That’s an unintentionally perfect distillation of PUMA/JSND (discluding the GOP strategists like Will Bower).

“Fuck America!  The only people who matter are Hillary and a handful of noisy hangers-on!  Us! Us!”

Dimwits…

“Fuck America!  The only people who matter are Hillary and a handful of noisy hangers-on!  Us! Us!”

Exactly.  I don’t even think it’s about Hillary much at this point either.  These are all folks who, for the most part, weren’t very politically engaged and have been pretty much ignored their whole lives who are now juiced up on PUMA “power.”  Their “message” is a jumbled mess of irrational anger directed at Obama (who’s somehow to blame for every bad thing that’s happened to them in their lives) and nonsensical spurts about how they’re “saving democracy.” The only coherent argument they seem to have is that there needs to be caucus reform (or complete eradication), but everything else is one big steaming pile of mush.  It’s all about them being heard, but what they’re saying doesn’t make a hell of a lot of sense. The convention should drive a stake into the black heart of this movement.  They’ll still holler and stamp their little PUMA paws, but after the last balloon drops in Denver, they’ll amount to nothing more than a handful of douchebags pulling the lever for McCain in Denver.

(who’s somehow to blame for every bad thing that’s happened to them in their lives)

Kevin don’t you realize that everything wrong in America is the black mans’ fault?  Jeez, has Geraldine Ferraro taught you nothing?

The only coherent argument they seem to have is that there needs to be caucus reform

Wish these vocal “millions” felt the same about the Electoral College especially in 2000.  The PUMA roars back then sounded a hell of a lot like crickets.

I have learned to love these little dead enders and to be honest I will miss them when they are gone….Rooaaarrrr.

I will miss them when they are gone

I’ve been thinking about this, too. What will we do for laughs once the last PUMA is neutered?

What will we do for laughs once the last PUMA is neutered?

Kevin K. was practically crying the other night about this….I’m only sort of kidding.

The only coherent argument they seem to have is that there needs to be caucus reform (or complete eradication),

And even there, I’m dead set against them.  Some degree of reform to allow for greater absentee participation (for those caucuses that don’t allow it - many already do)?  Fine.

But as a Democratic activist, as someone that pounds the pavement every summer and fall - even when I don’t get my choice atop the ticket - as someone that donates money, time, and support to the party… you know what?  In a partisan CANDIDATE—not elected official, but candidate selection process, my vote should count for more… and so should yours, if you give up your free time for the party, if you use up vacation days so you can help drive folks to the polls on election day… if you’re the type of person that DOES caucus.

Without caucuses, you might as well just let a couple of America Idol-type judges score the field on the name recognition and maybe CoH - and forget the whole damn primary process.

I’d actually prefer to see a Texas style system go nationwide… 2/3 delegates apportioned by popular vote, 1/3 by caucus.  To me - that strikes the perfect balance between heeding the will of the party regulars and the will of the party activists.

I didn’t see those two yesterday but the three I saw were sitting in the same cafe that you see there on the right.  Must have been getting together for a massive strategy session!  But don’t cry yet. I don’t remember where I saw this - but, assuming the inevitable happens and Obama wrests the nomination from Hillary’s clenching fists - they are strategizing over a big write-in campaign so Hillary can still win in November. roar, roar, roar.  Also in 48 page special section of the Rocky Mtn News today about the DNC not a single mention of PUMAs.  One line devoted to rally by other maybe not quite so fringy group 18 Million Voices: Rise Hillary Rise.  (Is Hillary Jesus now?)

known troublemaker:  I agree with you about the caucus system.  It may not be perfect but I agree it has a place in the system.  I’ve been going to caucuses for years and never once imagined the kind of energy that would occur this year.  That can only be good for the political system.

Kevin K. was practically crying the other night about this

Maybe Kev needs a bottle of Catharsis! I know I’m going to invest in one. By the way, do you drink it, or wear it?

marindriver - thanks for posting that very insightful comment. Makes really good sense.

What will we do for laughs once the last PUMA is neutered?

They’ll re-emerge in another guise. No group that has ever managed to con a few bucks out of a gullible audience gets off the gravy train willingly. My money is on The New Agenda. More on that later.

Sorry ... meant to direct the latter comment about the caucus system to known troublemaker’s original comment.

Betty Cracker—Have you ever thought about the inevitable acronym for “The New Agenda”?

TNA. You Can Never See Enough of That.

LOL, that didn’t occur to me, SA8. Scary thought.

does anyone else think the pumapac logo looks disturbingly…scrotal?

I’m certainly not agreeing with them about killing caucuses, just that it seems to be their only semi-coherent line of attack.
