Quote of the (Yester)day

Yep, Steve M. again:

If GOP governors reject stimulus money, especially for the neediest, it’s because that’s how they want to be seen—not as public servants but as ruthless embodiments of pure will.

Read it all. If you’re not reading No More Mister Nice Blog on a daily basis, you’re making a big mistake.

Couldn’t agree more. This is all being done in the name of ideological purity, nothing else. I’m glad to see the GOP ensuring their continued irrelevance, but it will unfortunately come at the expense of their constituents.

Well, in our case (texas), it’s about the primary in 2010.

I wish they had made the release of stimulus funds subject to a public pledge by governors/mayors/etc… “I swear to God and on my American flag lapel pin that I am wholeheartedly in favor of this legislation, both philosophically and practically.. now give me my money” ..

Anyone not willing to make that pledge would forfeit their funds and it would go back to be redistributed to those who did make the pledge.

I read that Bobby Jindal is one of the governors saying his state won’t take the money.  As if the residents of Louisiana haven’t suffered enough the last few years.  I hope they rise up and overthrow him if he really follows through on that.  But I have a feeling that, as frequently happens, rhetoric will be one thing; reality will be another.

I wish the media wouldn’t take the bait on this.  I wish a reporter would just say, “You’re thinking of rejecting the money?  Ok, call me when you’ve decided to actually do so..”

Jindal’s refusal is the sickest example of this - did the lower 9th ward suddenly spring back to life?

I can’t help but think about the disparity of money flow - “red” states getting more federal money back than they pay in taxes, “blue” states paying more in federal taxes than they receive.

Perhaps the republican governors refusing bailout money are just trying to repay that disparity?

My only quibble is that he uses the word will as a synonym for idiocy.

We know they’ll take the money, the only question is how hard we’ll laugh when they deny that they did take the money. I wouldn’t put it past these knobs to ask Admin to stuff unmarked, non-sequential $100 bills in garbage bags and deliver them via midnight air drop.

You know, I almost posted that as a QOTD myself today.  Second the endorsement of No More Mister Nice Blog—it’s consistently one of the best.
