John Cole in response to Peter Daou:

Just go the full emo and cut yourself, for chrissakes.

I couldn’t handle some of the EmoPants crowd that Cole gets. They seem to stay out of these parts for the most part. But man—I’ve got the two people I care most about in the world fighting cancer, and I’m not as depressed and pathetic and whiny as some of those assholes who still seem to think that “no public option” means “it’s all over, man!”

I love this series of Daou self-portraits.

The FinReg bill could be better but it’s many times better than the NO REGULATION AT ALL climate that almost collapsed our financial system just a short time ago.

But BTD and the crowd are full on Emo that it wasn’t a lot better.  Do they even follow ANY of the legislative process on these things?  At all?

Hahahaha!
I’ve been occasionally seeing “emo this” and “emo that” for several months, and kinda-sorta knowing what it meant. That most excellent photo montage of Emo Dad you linked to makes it crystal clear.

Having seen Emo Phillips recently, I can say that he distances himself from the Emo movement, pointing out that he was Emo before they were Emo.

There’s a lot of hacks out there, many of them with agendas. Dauo even admitted he’s not over the 2008 primaries in comments here, for gawd’s sake.

I’d really go for a hack-free vacation period about now.

You know, I don’t have anything against Peter Daou.  I really don’t.  I like his twitter feed because he does highlight a lot of good stuff about human rights, women’s rights, and other things on the international scene.

But christ on a fucking crutch, I just can’t take the overwhelming need to shit all over everything positive.  BTD accuses me of wanting everyone to think Obama is great, but what I really want is for the fringe of the progressive movement to spend less time trying to convince everyone Obama sucks.

In the real world, you look at where we were 18 months ago, and where we are now, and you calculate if we are better off.  You factor in things like the 100 egomaniacal assholes in the Senate as to what is fucking possible.

You don’t just fire up the sad trombone every your dream bill didn’t pass.  Hell, I’d like Russ Feingold’s bill to pass!  But I’m John Cole, and I have precisely 1 fewer vote in the Senate than Russ Feingold, and I’m not under the impression that if Obama just emoted properly and banged the podium there would be more than my non-existent vote and Russ Feingold’s one vote to make it pass.

Feh.  Whatever.  I ate a healthy dinner tonight, I’m going to go allow myself to have a few fingers of scotch and trash David Frum on twitter.  Hitchens made it to 60, I bet I can to, and if not, what’s another torpedo in a sinking ship.

It would be a very serious cut.

Ha, John, I think we’re all on the same page!  Enjoy your well deserved Scotch.

But I’m John Cole

And I approved this message.

Alt, I grew up in the same town as Emo. Yes, I know all about “Shopping in Downtown Downers Grove.” And yes, he does distance himself from “emo.”

He also used to have a FAQ on the site containing the following series of questions:

Q: Are you going to do a new album called “Finding Emo?”
Q: Are you going to do a concert film called “Finding Emo?”
Q: Are you going to write a memoir called “Finding Emo?”
Q: Why the twitching?

And John, I think the thing that pissed me off the most about that Daou tweet was his use of “legacy” when describing an administration that isn’t halfway through its first term. I guess the black ones don’t even get 3/5ths as much time as white presidents to get shit done before being declared failures.

... what I really want is for the fringe of the progressive movement to spend less time trying to convince everyone Obama sucks.

From this remove, it strikes me that if they did that, spent more time and energy identifying and pressurizing those who actually are obstructing and warping things (both Repubs and Dems, along with the media and some blogospherites etc.) rather than cooking up unsubstantiated conspiracy theories about what’s going on behind the scenes and being totally obnoxious to those ostensibly from the same side or at least thereabouts (FFS, if you can’t convince people who’re at least within the same ballpark ideologically, what hope is there of convincing the public at large?), and acknowledged and used the successes there’ve been to actively encourage people to think bigger, rather than spreading disillusionment and despair everywhere they post and comment, it might show some positive results.

But what do I know?

yup, obama’s more extreme critics from the left are lookin’ kinda douche-y. funnily enough, critics of obama’s critics from the left are also startin’ to look kinda douche-y.

And critics of the critics of Obama’s critics from the left are looking like concern trolls with syphilitic chancres. Whee! This is fun!
