Ravi Shankar Dies After Heart Surgery

Sitar-king Shankar—a musician who inspired the Beatles—died yesterday following heart-valve repairs. Here he is in a recent concert clip, still pickin’ and grinnin’ those magic strings.

Fair forward, traveler. Shantih, shantih, shantih.

Mr. Shankar makes me ashamed to have struggled so mightily to learn “Stairway to Heaven” on the ukulele. I’ve never seen a sitar in person. I’m trying to figure out what relationship the dozen-plus tuner-peg-looking-things have to the strings, which don’t appear to be that numerous. It’s a mystery.

Off topic but on music: for some reason, I can’t get the song “Starship Trooper” from the Yes album out of my head. I don’t think I’ve even heard it recently. Weird.

@Betty—I’m right there with you, doll!

@Betty—Regarding STH, you’re not the only one.

Or is this you?

Shankar was a giant in the field of making memorable music.  RIP.
