Redemption: Colin Powell gets all mavericky

Surreal ...

Finally, a prominent Republican speaks the truth about how far the party has fallen. Powell rebukes McCain for spreading malicious rumors, and allowing them to stand, and rebukes him for picking Palin. He praises Obama for his intellectual capacity and his steady demeanor.

Astounding!

MORE [From Kevin K.]: Here’s Colin Powell’s press conference after he finished taping his Meet the Press interview. He’s even more forthright here, condemning the McCain campaign’s recent attempts to brand Obama a socialist and Rep. Michele Bachmann’s call for the media to expose who’s “pro-America or anti-America” in Congress.

They’re simply exploding over at the Puma Pac blog.  All of their inner racism is coming to the forefront.  What a sad and shameful bunch.

Speaking of sad and shameful, Scarbrough and Brokaw on MTP are still trying to salvage McCain. Mrs. Greenspan, and even Brooks, acknowledge the enormity of Powell’s endorsement.

I despise Scarborough, that incarnate insult to the otherwise honorable Gator Nation and continuing embarrassment to right-thinking Floridians such as myself. However, I have to give the cretin a thimbleful of credit for acknowledging that the Powell endorsement might have an impact in Florida.

this is pretty funny

I know Im being a troll here but…

hundreds of thousands of Iraqis, as well as Americans, are dead becuase Powell didnt have the balls to stand up to the President and resigning knowing that the evidence on the WMD’s was most probably sketchy. yet he put his credibility on the line and lied to the world

Maybe repudiating his own party and endorsing Obama may be a small step towards redemption…but he is gonna have to do a lot more work in convincing the American public that its America that needs to change vis a vis Climate change, war on terror, foreign policy, economic policy, weapons control, poverty, AIDS, famine, ban on torture etc..its American that will need to show leadership…

Only then will Powell be redeemed

in the words of Gandalf “All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”

Powell still has time..do the right thing General

bimbo slice, you’re not being a troll, and I agree with your sentiment. I almost went back earlier and put a question mark after (Redemption?) because I knew I was being overly emotional about it.  This is a first step for Powell, as progressives see it, and no doubt it was hard to do. I think it’s illustrative of the influence Obama has. Welcome to the big tent, Mr. Powell ... now get to work!

A lot of people have a lot to answer for regarding the build up to the war.  It wasn’t all Powell’s fault. That said, it’s good to see him making a judgment for the need to get behind someone who will bring the country together to begin solving our problems instead of being in denial about them.

I think Powell’s endorsement is pretty significant because I think he is very highly respected by a lot of middle class, moderate thinking people, a lot of whom are still undecided.  These are the people who still think McCain is basically an honorable, principled person who is just being led astray by all his nasty campaign people (as if).  Powell could very well now give them permission to let McCain go and support Obama.

If nothing else, the press attention to this for a couple of days will drown out some of McCain’s negative stuff for awhile too.

Powell was wrong on one thing. McCain is a racist. Up until recently, he referred to Asians as “gooks” and he never voted for a Martin Luther King Jr. birthday federal holiday.

Obama/Biden ‘08 & ‘12!

Wow. I just watched the update Kevin posted; powerful words in the last few minutes of the clip.

I think Colin choked up when he mentioned the soldier and his mother resting on his gravestone. I have been reading the comments posted on Washpo diary dedicated to the falled, of which a diary of Kareem exists..his mother writes to him everyday…she is still very much grieving his loss….this is too gut wrenching…I am truly ashamed of being an American when I see videos of people taunting Muslims

and Powell is being trashed now by the “right”. They have no shame and not the tiniest shred of intelligence. none.

and Powell is being trashed now by the “right”

Pat Buchanan was just despicable on Hard Ball a little while ago.  I tried to find a video but couldn’t find anything - maybe someone else will see one.  He basically said Powell owes the Republican Party everything - that he never would have had a career without them - and now he’s turning on them.  Yeah, without the Rethugs he never would have made general, never been chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, never would have been a thoughtful, intelligent and highly respected leader.  I don’t agree with Powell on many things but he is a highly accomplished person and a very decent person.  His words about our country today moved me to tears.  He also made the point at least twice that he was more than concerned about the Right Shift of the Republican Party.  Basically, the Party has abandoned him.  I would just translate Buchanan’s remarks as “If you let them get too uppity they just turn on you.”  But he definitely showed himself for the racist piece of shit he really is.

It’s been said before Donna, but I’ll repeat it: The mixed bag of nuts who now make up the GOP would attack Jesus if he endorsed Obama.
