Rep. Joe Barton (R-TX/BP) “ashamed” about Obama’s “shakedown” of BP (W/ VIDEO)

Rep. Joseph Linus Barton (R-TX/BP)

From The Dallas Morning News:

Where are the defenders of Big Oil? Who is looking out for the millionaires who have given up vacations so that they can sorta weather the oil spill storm in the gulf? Well, finally, someone stands up for Big Oil’s right to be careless and to avoid responsibility! Our very own Joe Barton.

As CNN’s anchor just put it, covering the BP hearing, “You just had your first ‘Wow!’ of the day.”

Barton apologized to the BP CEO. He said he was “ashamed” at what took place at the White House yesterday because a private company being asked to set up a trust fund following an environmental/economic disaster is “a terrible precedent.” And he called it a “shakedown.”

UPDATE: Here’s the video…

Ha ha! America, your former country, thanks you, Linus!

Heh. What a crock. I just read on a well-informed PUMA site that Obama got “rolled” by BP.

Some dictatorial thug he turned out to be. People who moan about “Chicago politics” can STFU now…except for posters on the site I just mentioned, since they’re allowed to have it both ways.

He would also like to apologize to BP because American workers are so fragile and flammable.

We hope that the flames rising from their corpses didn’t make the fire too much worse.

I watched less than five minutes of news this morning and that’s the part I saw.  My jaw dropped and then I said, “what the fuck?”

Of course, the MSNBC anchor lady got Joe Barton’s name wrong when they cut in during Stupak’s statement.  She said it was Michael somebody.

He’s a corporatist! A socialist! A corporatist! A socialist!

My sister! *slap* My daughter! *slap* Sister *slap* Daughter! *slap*

I just read on a well-informed PUMA site that Obama got “rolled” by BP.

Starts with a “c” and ends with an “e”? (Yeah, it could be either of the possibilities…)

Bachmann said something similar yesterday. Not quite as egregious, but along those lines. I hope all Republicans take it up as their rallying cry.

The Democrats should lose big this fall: they’re the party in power, the economy sucks, the general anti-incumbent mood is as strong as I’ve ever seen, etc. But the combined brain power of the GOP is making me feel more optimistic by the day.

He and Gov. Barbour can set up a charity for poor lil’ B.P. which is going to be totally broke now.

The GOP ladies and gentlemen. The leading source of felony stupid for America, for the world.

Dick Armey, too.

I really don’t get this. Politically it’s unbelievably tone deaf. Is it just because they have to oppose everything Obama does or do they see a longterm political benefit? Or are they just flat-out corporate whores and don’t care that they make it as obvious as possible?

Kevin, what happened with the post about the self-styled Berkeley psychotherapist that was in the Chris Matthews video?

Is it just because they have to oppose everything Obama does

Yes. Bread and circuses…

These folks can get away with stupid stuff like this.  Barton’s in a safe district, Bachmann isn’t up for re-election until 2012 and it seems like she’s pretty safe, Armey isn’t an elected official.  Not sure of Barbour’s situation but if he’s running for prez in 2012 he’s either banking on time making people forget or that winning the conservative states will be enough.

Saint Sarah twitted anything yet?

@ Kevin: All of the above?

Whatever he does, they reflexively oppose it—even if today’s criticism directly contradicts the one they used yesterday. Where convenient, they’ll use conflicting attacks on the same day, just to make sure they cover the RINO-Libertarian-TeaBagger spectrum.

A couple of commenters at Wonkette have said Markey gave Barton the business.  I’m sure someone will find video of that soon.

Kevin, what happened with the post about the self-styled Berkeley psychotherapist that was in the Chris Matthews video?

Closed it because it may have been incorrect. There wasn’t much of a post without the video and didn’t want to keep it open if it was wrong. I’m a “100% sure” kinda guy and I wasn’t after I looked into it more.

Tom once again made me laugh really hard—love me a well played “Chinatown” reference!

And yeah, even my far-right family members who think Obama is a Muslim socialist have posted the thing on Facebook about contacting the BP dunderhead who said that Louisiana isn’t the only place to get shrimp, so I tentatively am hopeful that the “feel sorry for Big Oil” line will backfire. But hey—Bush got elected twice so who knows?

Nope, nothing yet about the $20b fund. She just tweeted this:

Barton’s staff is feisty.

And he called it a “shakedown.”

Fine. Let them set up street collections for Big Oil.

And, right on cue, Pat Buchanan says Barton was “courageous” to stand up for BP.

It’s official: Rush says it’s a lawless “shakedown.”

Boner just threw Barton under the bus.

Another campaign ad: the live feed from underwater while Barton apologizes.

Just saw that myself, Allan.

Lotsa larfs.

What an interesting mind-fuck for these ‘baggers!

Of course it was only a matter of time before the Teabaggers started rooting for the Oil.

Agreed with gimme.  HTP, a winner is you!

Elizabeth - M. Bachmann as a U.S. Rep has to stand for election every 2 years, so she’s up for reelection this year like all the others.  Don’t know what she’s drawn in the way of opposition though…

Don’t know what she’s drawn in the way of opposition though…

That would be Tarryl Clark.  Send her some love if you can.

I think we should just let Joe Barton keep the mike always.

And before the evening news hour, Barton has apologized if you were offended because you misunderstood his apology.

Wheee!

I think this is what you might call momentum.

And if anything I said this morning has been misconstrued in an opposite effect I want to apologize for that misconstruction.

Wow. That wins the prize for the most incoherent GOP nonapology ever, full stop, the end.

misconstruction

Shouldn’t that be “misconstruesement”?

Who is this guy, Leo Gorcey?

And before the evening news hour, Barton has apologized if you were offended because you misunderstood his apology.

The management wishes to convey that the people responsible for Joe Barton’s apology have been sacked, and Joe Barton wishes to retract his apology and say just how wonderful BP is as a corporation and that they should be all given ponies.

The people responsible for Joe Barton’s retraction of his apology saying how great and awesome BP is have been sacked, but not before saying how cool BP is and how smexy Tony Hayward’s hair is.

The people responsible for sacking the people responsible for Joe Barton’s retraction to his apology to BP have been in fact crushed by Barack Obama’s huge Kenyan penis.

I see that others have already noted the apology for the apology. I’m sorry, but that’s just sorry.
(more at my place)

We live in an age of miracles. Barton’s even managed to cast Hayward in a favorable light (albeit temporarily):

BP CEO Tony Hayward disavowed a top Republican’s characterization of a $20 billion relief fund the company will establish as a “slush fund.”

Hayward rejected the controversial remarks Rep. Joe Barton (R-Texas) made Thursday morning, in which he criticized the account in escrow the oil company will create to pay out damages to victims of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

“I certainly didn’t think it was a slush fund,” Hayward said this afternoon during an appearance before a congressional committee.

Barton had said earlier today that he was “ashamed” of President Barack Obama and his administration’s efforts to pressure BP into creating the relief fund. The Texas congressman apologized to Hayward for the way the company had been treated by the government.

“As we said yesterday, the fund is a signal of our commitment to do right to ensure ... everyone who’s been impacted by this is kept whole,” Hayward said. “That is what I’ve said from the beginning of this, and that’s what we intend to do.”

Congressman Barton’s statements this morning were wrong.

That is verbatim from a statement issued by Boehner, Cantor and Pence.

God help us, I think this may be the end times.

God help us, I think this may be the end times.

Well, love ‘em or hate ‘em (and I’m in the latter camp) they are all, at least, pretty astute politicians who understand that the nation’s anger at BP is not a partisan issue and don’t want to make it one.

Well Marin, get ready for some white-hot hate being directed at Colorado (and you) because of this ... this ... monstrosity ... this crime against ear drums ... this abomination of abominable proportions.

Thanks a fucking lot, Colorado.
