RIP Al Weisel (aka the blogger Jon Swift)

Al Weisel

Very sad news. Al Weisel, freelance writer and the blogger known as Jon Swift, has passed away due to a sudden aortic aneurysm. He was a great guy and a wonderfully witty writer. He will be sorely missed. Tom Watson has more information here.

MORE: If you’re unfamiliar with Al’s faux conservative prowess, this is a good place to start. One of my fairly recent favorites was his “10 Best Conservative Movies” post.  There are many great entries to choose from, so in honor of Al please leave links to your favorite Jon Swift posts or copy ‘n’ paste some of your favorite quotes in the comments.

UPDATE: You can join the “Friends of Al Weisel, Unite!” Facebook group here.

God, how horrible! And how very awful for his family to have lost a son and brother as well as a husband and father in such a short time.

Jon Swift was hilarious. I think he invented Stephen Colbert.

I think he invented Stephen Colbert.

Good point.  He had that niche covered long before Colbert did.

Oh my God. Terrible news.

Aw, shit.

Oh jeez, this sucks ass.

It’s funny, his blog led to one of my most embarrassing moments as a blogger when I failed to realize his site was parody. I went ballistic on his write up of Mr. Wizard’s death and all of his readers came to inform me, some nicely, some not so nicely (and I deserved it).

In the end, he was a real good sport about it and later that year he helped us raise money for a charity fundraiser for the troops.

Good people. Funny, and in the blogosphere where hits are more precious than money, generous too.

Condolences.

I am so, so sorry.  He was one of my favorite writers.  Irreplaceable.  RIP Jon Swift.

Yeah, I got to “know” him via email during one of my dustups with Protein Wisdom that he jumped in on. He was always very good to his fellow bloggers.

One of my earliest Web heroes.

Not dead, just uploaded and cached-in-perpetuity on the Master Server.

Goodbye, Jon.

Very sad news. I read his blog intermittently, but always admired his writing. And it is just so horrible for his family to have two big losses like that in a row. My thoughts are with all of them.

Very sad news. I loved his work. Would have loved to have met him in person.  My thoughts are with his family. Its a terrible loss.

Sad.  His writing was fantifico.  He’ll be missed.

His blog was the best political satire I have ever read.

For days my friend Bella was pouring her heart out on Facebook about her dear friend Al Weisel—even started a group to keep people informed of his condition. I had no idea Al was the blogger Jon Swift, with whom I corresponded. In fact, I was sure “Jon” was someone in the Obama administration as he had stopped blogging shortly after Obama took office. What an awful, sad story—and end to a young life. I feel sick.

Sad news indeed, but thanks for passing it along, Kevin.

I was already missing him, due to how quite the Jon Swift blog had gone, but this still hurts a lot, for some reason.  And man, his poor mother.

^quite^quiet

Also, I propose that this phrase be enshrined in his honor: “I have not actually read this book.

Haha, those were great ‘reviews’, weren’t they?

Good guy.  Sorry he’s gone, and way too soon.
