Sean Hannity’s Happy Dance [UPDATED]

No wonder Sean Hannity looked so happy in this video recorded at one of his Freedom Concerts last year. Apparently he was dancing on money he stole from his rubes. Heh, tonight should be interesting...  [Media Matters has more.]

UPDATE: Okay, I hate to defend Hannity, but then it is the even more reprehensible Schlussel we’re talking about, so linking to this is a win-win for me. Hey, all that matters is that I found an excuse to post the video of Hannity dancing like a little girl again.

Doesn’t Debbie Schlussel frequently report seeing the face of Osama bin Laden in her own poop? Yes! But if the numbers check out, they check out—regardless of the source. I’m sure Fox will reveal the whole truth.

Yes, Schlussel isn’t the most reliable source but she’s taking those numbers straight off the IRS forms (which are public information) and it looks bad.  Generally speaking legitimate charities should have less than 25% of their revenues going to admin costs and theirs are much, much higher than that.  Apparently they gave a defense that most of the kids they intend to help with scholarships are not old enough for college yet (so there!) but, hey, investing the money in scholarship funds so it will grow is a much better alternative than spending $3+M on postage and printing!  I mean, how do you even do that?

I’m a little surprised, didn’t know Cyrus played these shows.
I used to live near his hometown,Flatwoods,KY.  Cyrus was(last time checked)a democrat, his father Ron was a longtime dem in the KY state leg(and a high-ranking AFL-CIO official).
Only thing I can guess is (A)he got sucked in by the “charity for veterans’kids” angle or (B)his principles are less important than getting “exposure”.

Sorry about the scholarships, dude, but the Han-Man lives BIG.

Besides, Sean’s teaching those kids an important lesson about capitalism, fools and money.

There’s been several diaries at dKos regarding this charity <koff> and its disbursement of funds.  I’m not sure why Schlussel is on this, of a sudden, but she’s a good year behind the investigative curve.

Oh, and for added laughs, Ollie North is involved, iirc.

The Freedom Alliance responds.

I would only note that “Program Activities” is rather a nebulous heading.

I think that’s supposed to be “Charity related program activities”.

OK, so I’m a little bored so I just spent some time reading their 2008 Form 990 (2009 not yet available).  And trust me, I know how to read a 990 - I prepare or review over 50 of them every year. :-)

They do spend the bulk of their revenue on their exempt activities which consist of mass mailings of pro-war propaganda*; support for the troops (including direct grants to injured veterans); scholarships and running some summer program to convince high school kids to join up.

By far the bulk of the spending went to the propaganda campaign (44%).  The scholarships got about 15% (which averaged about $4,000 per recipient)and the direct assistance to wounded vets a little under 10%.  So I guess the issue is they’re pushing their organization as being all about the scholarships when that’s a relatively small part of the real picture.

I could not find any indication that Hannity benefits personally from any of this (unless he’s got an ownership in the direct mail companies that they’re spending $2-$3 mil on every year) and the new version of the 990 which came out last year requires immensely more disclosure and detail than the former one, so Schlussel probably did defame him on that charge.

*This would probably loosely come under the definition of “education” which is an exempt purpose as opposed to lobbying which they say they do not do.
