So, Mitt, Didja Build It?

I know there’s some give and take going on right now with Mitt Romney following the kind of wingnutty flavor of the day regarding President Obama’s supposed “you didn’t build that” gaffe. (I say Romney knows better, but is willing to, as they say, “follow a multitude to do evil”). I’ve been fixated on Mitt’s Olympic experience this past week (or as I’ve begun thinking of it, “Bain Capital: The Missing Years”), almost to the point where I might read his book on the whole thing, if I can a) find it at the library and b) smuggle some bourbon into the library. I find it improbable that I will not want to blunt the tone of self-congratulation I’m kind of already anticipating.

But anyways, this is a thing that was on tv about a handful of months ago:

Now, that isn’t entirely fair of me. Of course, the Olympics is an old established thingie that Mitt didn’t build from the ground up—no. He rescued it. Like, with a bunch of federal money. Just like companies sometimes need federal money to keep going—even companies someone may have built themselves. I guess what I’m getting at is this particular argument—whether any man, woman, or business enterprise, is an island of “do-it-oneselfery”—might not be Romney’s best tack.

That’s all.

What did I say?

What did I say?

After two consecutive days of strong attacks on President Obama for his comments touting government’s role in fostering new businesses, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s message was decidedly more muddled on Thursday when a local television station here reported that one of the entrepreneurs selected to illustrate Romney’s point got government help.

Well, we are talking about a genius candidate and campaign that not only insisted on kicking off a bus tour at a place called Scamman, but used the occasion to blast federal funding [*snare drum roll*] at a farm that had been preserved by federal funding [*BOOM tsssss*].

Why, it’s almost as if that sort of thing were commonplace.

I need to check out where I saw this (probably TPM) but Willard not only got all that federal $$ in to beef up the infrastructure in and around the Olympics sites but he and his cronies also managed to cheaply acquire big hunks of undeveloped land in that area which also benefited from all those nice new roads and sewers and stuff which made for totally nice development opportunities for those who just *happened* to get in on the ground floor.

Funny how that stuff happens, right?

And there’s also this:

When Mitt Romney transitioned from working full-time at Bain Capital to running the Salt Lake Organizing Committee, he did not fully leave the private equity firm. That’s not just because he continued to sign documents and take a salary, or because he described himself as Bain’s CEO on the Olympics’ website, but because he brought with him Bain’s personnel, ethos and, most importantly, its clients.

“How could I walk away from the golden goose?” he asked.
He brought the golden goose with him. Camping in Utah, and confiding to colleagues that his future political career was on the line, Romney opened his Bain rolodex.

Why, it’s almost as if that sort of thing were commonplace.

The O campaign is going to need—needs now—a Hypocrisy Editor, someone whose sole full-time job is harvesting, sorting, and selecting from the endless examples of blatant hypocrisy from the life and sayings of Mitt.  I think I’m kidding but I’m not.

Come September, one of the main themes of the O campaign has got to be: YOU CAN’T BELIEVE A WORD THIS MAN SAYS.  Period.

There was an interesting piece in the Denver Post this morning about how the majority of Romney’s Bain Capital investors were wealthy foreigners looking for tax shelters for their money.  So the huge returns that Romney’s vulture capitalism generated basically all went offshore.  This bears looking into.  Unfortunately I couldn’t find the link on the website because, unsurprisingly, everything right now is devoted to covering this horrendous shooting which took place this morning at an Aurora movie theater showing Batman (Aurora is a suburb).  Gunman shot up the place, killed 12 and wounded another 50.

When, oh when, is there going to be a serious discussion about gun control in this country?

When, oh when, is there going to be a serious discussion about gun control in this country?

When our society decides to stop being defined by fear, which probably means never.

Willard not only got all that federal $$ in to beef up the infrastructure in and around the Olympics sites but he and his cronies also managed to cheaply acquire big hunks of undeveloped land in that area which also benefited from all those nice new roads and sewers and stuff

That’s what the Olympics are all about.  It’s a scam for developers.
