Standing on the Corpses of Giants Part II: Politician Takes Responsibility—Republicans Astonished

You can’t wander far online right now without encountering fistpumping jubilation among rightwingers that four diplomats were killed and three wounded in Benghazi last month—just in time for their October Surprise!

Mitt Romney, from the Mother Jones “secret video”:

... in the Jimmy Carter election, the fact that we have hostages in Iran, I mean, that was all we talked about. And we had the two helicopters crash in the desert, I mean that’s—that was—that was the focus, and so him solving that made all the difference in the world. I’m afraid today if you said, “We got Iran to agree to stand down a nuclear weapon,” they’d go hold on. It’s really a, but…by the way, if something of that nature presents itself, I will work to find a way to take advantage of the opportunity.

YAY! Something of that nature happened! Dead Americans! Opportunity!

Form of a human—Mittbot transform!

Romney Chokes Up Recalling Fallen Navy SEAL

Mitt Romney shared a remarkable story at a campaign rally in Iowa today, his voice wavering and cracking slightly as he described the tragic death of a former Navy SEAL he’d met years earlier.  The young man was from Massachusetts; he died in Benghazi during the September 11 terrorist attack against the American consulate that claimed the life of US Ambassador Chris Stevens.  Here is Mitt’s stirring and moving tribute:

Pesky humans:

Romney was visibly emotional during the story, and the video of the speech was repeated throughout the day on network and cable news.

But one of Glen Doherty’s best friends remembered Doherty’s impression of this meeting much differently.
Ellefsen said Doherty recalled meeting Mitt Romney years ago, but the account was much different from what the Presidential candidate retold in Iowa.

According to Ellefsen, Romney introduced himself to Doherty four separate times during the gathering.

“He said it was very comical,” Ellefsen said, “Mitt Romney approached him ultimately four times, using this private gathering as a political venture to further his image. He kept introducing himself as Mitt Romney, a political figure. The same introduction, the same opening line. Glen believed it to be very insincere and stale.”

Ellefsen said Doherty remembered Romney as robotic.

“He said it was pathetic and comical to have the same person come up to you within only a half hour, have this person reintroduce himself to you, having absolutely no idea whatsoever that he just did this 20 minutes ago, and did not even recognize Glen’s face.”

The mother of Glen Doherty, a Navy SEAL who was one of four Americans killed in the Sept. 11 attack in Libya, told a Boston TV station that GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney shouldn’t politicize her son’s death.
“I don’t trust Romney,” she said. “He shouldn’t make my son’s death part of his political agenda. It’s wrong to use these brave young men, who wanted freedom for all, to degrade Obama.”

Take advantage!

A Democratic memo accuses Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) of trying to hide a fact-finding trip to Libya from Democrats.

The trip was used to gather evidence for a politically charged hearing the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee will hold Wednesday on security lapses at the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, the memo said. ...

The secretive trip, the Democratic staff memo says, is proof that Issa is looking to score political points by holding the hearing less than a month before Election Day while the investigation is still going on.

Find a way!

Congressional Hearing Accidently Reveals Location Of CIA Base In Libya

A U.S. congressional hearing accidently blew the CIA’s cover in a public hearing which was televised Wednesday according to a Reuters report.

During the hearing of the Oversight and Government Reform Committee to examine security lapses that led to the killing of U.S. Ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens and three others in Benghazi last month, the members inadvertently revealed that one of the two compounds through a photographed satellite map— formally described by the U.S. administration as a “consulate” and a nearby “annex” — was a CIA base, the Washington Post reported.

A congressman, Jason Chaffetz, pointed out that the committee was revealing classified information but by then the damage was already done.

Committee chairman Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) ordered the photo be taken down soon after Chaffetz’s objection. “Too bad he didn’t think of that before putting the CIA on C-SPAN,” Washington Post columnist Dana Milibank wrote.

Rep. Issa calls Libya a ‘mission accomplished’ moment for Obama

“We believe they didn’t want the appearance of needing the security. We want to put real security ahead of the appearance of not needing security,” Issa said Sunday on CBS’s “Face the Nation.”

“We are going through a ‘mission accomplished’ moment. Eleven years after September 11 [2001], Americans were attacked on September 11 [2012] by terrorists who pre-planned to kill Americans. That happened and we can’t be in denial, particularly when there are compounds all over the Middle East that need to be legitimately protected at a level that security professionals ask for,” Issa said of the attack in Libya.

Is that you, Jimmy? Oh. Hi, Hillary:

Clinton: I’m responsible for diplomats’ security

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Monday tried to douse a political firestorm over the deadly assault on a U.S. diplomatic mission in Libya, saying she’s responsible for the security of American diplomatic outposts.

“I take responsibility,” Clinton said during a visit to Peru. “I’m in charge of the State Department’s 60,000-plus people all over the world, 275 posts. The president and the vice president wouldn’t be knowledgeable about specific decisions that are made by security professionals. They’re the ones who weigh all of the threats and the risks and the needs and make a considered decision.”

But she said an investigation now under way will ultimately determine what happened at the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, where Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans were killed on September 11.

“I take this very personally,” Clinton said. “So we’re going to get to the bottom of it, and then we’re going to do everything we can to work to prevent it from happening again, and then we’re going to work to bring whoever did this to us to justice.”

High fives and treble bourbons all round!

Mission Accomplished!

Thanks for putting together this damning assemblage of the Vulture’s greatest bits, but unfortunately, one pressbox of idiot pigeons tweeting “He has so much energy and win now!” seems to trump truth and decency.

Truth and decency are used to getting a thorough trumping, so perhaps they can take it, I hope.

Good for Hillary, though.

Funny, isn’t it?  Watching wingers have to choose to whack on pres. Obama rather than Hillary, and when Hillary is offering herself for the whacking.  Considering how much hate they hold for Hillary, this either shows some strategic restraint on their part, or scarier still (especially to those of us who lived through the ‘Hitlery’ era), they really do hate pres Obama more.  The latter is truly scary to contemplate…

I think they fantasize they’re going to use it as a wedge issue, presumably appealing to that vital PUMA vote, wiping out the whole “GOP war on women” narrative, erasing all memory of the original 9/11 and its aftermath, and lining up a well-telegraphed “the President should man up on Libya/buck stops here” zinger they hope Mitt will deliver tonight if the opportunity arises (or even if it doesn’t).

Yeah, they think you people are that stupid. Projection again.

Romney Warned Against Pointing Fingers At Bush Administration After 9/11 Attacks

During a 2004 National Press Club luncheon, Romney was asked to address the 9/11 Commission’s finding of serious intelligence failures on the part of the US government in the run-up to the attacks. He responded that it is easy, but ultimately not particularly helpful, to blame different parts of the government for the attack:

It’s very easy, it is extraordinarily easy to point fingers and say, ‘Why, this part of government knew this and it didn’t tell that part.’ And, ‘These people here haven’t learned that.’ Well, the reason those barriers exist is for legitimate purpose in a world that was pre-September 11th. And judging our intelligence by post- September 11th conditions is something we have to do carefully. We do that to help us get better, and to the extent we find criticism in the kind of work that I’ve had to do and others are doing, it should be focused on how we can make ourselves more effective in the post-9/11 world. But trying to judge what happened pre-9/11 by post-9/11 knowledge is probably not terribly fruitful.
