At risk of finding any comity with the likes of Drudge, let me say that I also am rooting for Rio. There is no way this won’t run into ridiculous cost overruns, displace a lot of poor people on the south side, and ensure that everyone gets a raw deal except Daley’s developer friends.

Of course, if I were truly a bleeding heart, I wouldn’t wish the inevitable corruption and disruption of the Olympics on Rio, either. But I don’t have to live there.

Just as the the UN is an insidious plot to undermine American sovereignty to the horrors of a one world government, so too are the Olympics merely a fifth column movement to suborn the sanctity of American football to the horrors of a one world soccer league.

I don’t live anywhere near where they’re going to be centered in the UK, and I know I’m not alone in feeling the same way, for very similar reasons to those you cite (former London Mayor Ken Livingstone even bragged about how he’d succeeded in diverting all that cash to pay for London redevelopment plans that wouldn’t otherwise have come to pass - all this at the expense of the rest of the country).

It should ensure that, though either of us could, at any given time, destroy the other through the mechanism of devastating comments and posts, the initiator would be destroyed as well.

YAFB, I think a lot of us in Chicago resent the notion that if we get the Olympics, then the city will get around to fixing transit, etc. Since, you know, we use transit all the fucking time and pay taxes, we sort of think it should be a priority anyway, not just for a two-week ego-fest for Daley (who, hundreds of years from now will be represented, according to my friend Brian, by a pair of massive feet atop a pedestal inscribed “Look upon my works, ye mighty, and despair!”)

Drudge remains an ass in a hat, but I have to agree with Oblomova, only even more generally.  More often than not the Olympics are a freakin’ blight wherever they land, from the utterly corrupt IOC city selection process to the giant sucking sound of billions of dollars draining out of the host city’s coffers, often never to return again.  The last 2 American host cities state that they turned a profit on it, but that’s still a lot of scratch for bread & circus, as opposed to, you know, doing something productive for your citizenry.  And Chicago’s a special case of course, thanks to Mayor $3 Bill.
