Sonia Sotomayor

From The NY Times:

President Obama will nominate Judge Sonia Sotomayor of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit as his first appointment to the court, officials said Tuesday, and has scheduled an announcement for 10:15 a.m. at the White House.

I can’t believe he’s pandering to the PUMAs on this.

Did we suddenly run out of qualified white men?

Interesting round-up of Judge Sotomayor’s civil court opinions on SCOTUSblog.

Cue wingnut meltdown.

Sotamayor’s positions on affirmative action are going to drive the GOP batshit insane (as if they weren’t already). Kyl is already lining up as the designated hitter.

Cue wingnut meltdown.

From your lips to God’s ears, Tom. They can further alienate the fastest-growing demographic in the US, more firmly entrench themselves in the Limbaugh-Minuteman wing of the party and piss off women. A hat-trick!

Count on it, Betty. They can’t help themselves.

K-Lo has already answered the call:

You’d think the president would have put at least a day between Memorial Day and nominating a judge to the Supreme Court who would bury the claims of firefighters — men who put their lives on the line in service for others — on the altar of political correctness.

I can’t believe he’s pandering to the PUMAs on this.

If he was really pandering to them he would have picked Mimi Planas ... or Harriet Christian.

K-Lo has already answered the call

Good christ.

Wow. K-Lo shot the whole right-wing wad in one horribly misleading sentence.

Ricci v. DeStefano was an affirmative action case which involved a complaint within the New Haven fire department. She makes it sound like Sotomayor denied cancer benefits and pensions to the 9-11 heroes.

It’s Hillary or nobody!

Poor kitties. They won’t have their opportunity to rage against the selection of Deval Patrick.

She ended the 1994 baseball strike, so I’m in her corner.

Of course, one of the first puma to oppose the nom has a fish in it’s name.

Mixing it up a bit — after reading this I thought she either needs 1) therapy or 2) should move to Puerto Rico

to quote a friend - she sounds very much like “Michelle Obama” - Cracks me up to listen to people like her….how unfair this country has been to “minorities”…..uh, em, eh, ah, Sonia….how did you get to where you are today? What a crock o’ shit.

assclown.

Did we suddenly run out of qualified white men?

Suddenly? Try years ago. I suspect Dockers give off some kind of neural toxin.

Just because simofish is a lesbian doesn’t mean she can’t be a racist Freeper.

simofish is chaneling K-Lo.

DWP — what about the 2003 ruling? Connecticut fireman who, in 2003, had scored well on the test which the fire department administered to determine promotions to such positions as lieutenant and captain. But when it was revealed that black firefighters had, on average, scored much lower on that test, the New Haven Fire Department, reasoning that the exam itself must have been racially biased, discarded the results and granted no promotions that year.

The Appeals Court declined to hear the case en banc, and let stand a District Court decision that found the Plaintiffs could not prove that the New Haven Fire Department had a more sinister motive than maintaining compliance with Federal hiring requirements.

You can debate the merits of the District Court’s decision or the Appeals Court’s refusal to re-hear it, but the conclusion that Sotormayor supports subversive hiring policies on account of her racist agenda is pure booga-booga.

Fish of a feather…

I too will reserve judgment until I learn more about Sotomayor. The information Simo posted makes one wonder if she has an underlying agenda. Also, the video that was posted here last week where was she was flippantly joking about policy being made in the courts was disturbing to me.

Please remember that PUMA is not a Republican front group.

I meant to say that PUMA is neither Republican nor racist.

murphy I’m so disappointed by Sotomayor’s appointment.

The SC didn’t need an affirmative action advocate-that is not their role.

I hope Justice Roberts kicks her ass.

What is scary is that Obama will most likely get to appoint another justice.
He could really pack the court with “bench legislators”-not good for America, IMO.

dances-read the Ricci stuff-it’s disturbing. quiz later ;-)

PUMA supports ALL women…except the ones it doesn’t.

If only Bill Donohue had answered that 3AM phone call…

[cue: wailing, gnashing of teeth, rending of garments, eating of vomit, spewing of talking points]

BTW, saw Jim Wallis in the crowd at the announcement today.

Minorities are always unqualified compared to white people! That’s why even though Barack Obama had more legislative experience than either Edwards or Hillary Clinton, and even though none of the three had any significant experience running governmental departments or other large organizations (corporate law and First Lady ceremonial duties in HRC’s case with a few board memberships—which Obama also had—and longtime plaintiff’s attorney in Edwards’ case with,I think, some board membership stuff as well, which is pretty much de rigeur for politicians and lawyers), only Obama could be dismissed as the “empty suit” and the “affirmative action candidate.”

And that’s not racist! That’s just the way it is. And the Kool-Aid drinkers just wanted a cool black guy to be president and didn’t bother researching his record!(The fact that he apparently didn’t put race on his Harvard law application and that the Harvard Law Review doesn’t really choose editors on the the basis of squishy feel-goodism is beside the point, natch.)

As for Sotomayor being just like Michelle, I’m waiting for the next charming PUMA epithet du jour. Anyone wanna bet “beaner” will be in there someplace? It’s not like I expect the PUMAs to be more creative than Cheech and Chong.

For all lurking lamberts (and kitties!) disappointed by Greenwald’s praise of an Oblahblah pick: you just need to find a better whiner.

So this would make it six Catholics out of nine?
Excuse me if I’m less than enthusiastic.

I found out about this story around noon. By 8 PM, it felt like it had already been a week. Can’t the conservatives pace themselves (they’ll lose this one anyhow) instead of always just barging in, screaming LEEROOOOOOOOOOOY nhdJJJJENKIIYYYYYNS!!
