Therein lies our only hope. For decades, the Republicans have been all about shoveling largess to the rich. All the crap about god, guns, gays, fetuses, foreigners, welfare queens, etc., was merely a diversion so that they could wage class war on behalf of the rich against the rest of us. And it worked like a charm for decades!

But maybe the jig is finally up—or reaching its conclusion, anyway. The day the GOP started painting teachers, cops and firemen as government teat-sucking parasites may have been the ultimate overreach. Hell, most of those people are WHITE!

As I recall the top marginal bracket at that time was about 60%.  Don’t remember how high your income needed to be before you hit that though.  St. Ronnie then oversaw an overhaul of the tax code which became the Tax Code of 1986 under which we currently operate.  They originally cast it as “simplification” of the tax code and a “flat tax” but that spun out of control very quickly resulting in the beginning of the vastly cumbersome and ludicrously complex vehicle that we have today.*  The flat tax ended up as two brackets - 15% and 28% - but a 33% or thereabouts had to be added before long.  Under Clinton the top bracket eventually went up to 39.6% which Dubya then lowered to 35% where it is today.

*Mainly because the specter of raising tax rates is so hideous that instead they lower deductions by inserting graduated phase-outs on all kinds of things at all different levels to where it became literally impossible to prepare an accurate return without a computer and not so sure how accurate a lot of them are even with.
