A former colleague of mine used to talk about how the Mexicans were slipping over the border and taking our jobs. I would point out that it was very unlikely that PhD physicists were slipping over the border to threaten his job security.

Then he would point out that it was a known fact that 9.11 was an inside job.

Come to think of it, he was soft on the whole idea of global warming. And, he thought that the biggest problem in our society, after the people slipping over the border, was we didn’t have enough roads.

I’m 38, and in the past decade I’ve moved from a libertarian-leaning independent to a raging progressive, largely because of Bush’s presidency and Obama’s campaign.

People in my generation (especially males) have been, for lack of a better word, indoctrinated into the whole “government is bad” mindset thanks to growing up in the Reagan administration.

It’s tough to get them to break from this thinking, especially when they are too busy trying to earn a living and raise their kids.

@jeffinfremont—Libertarianism is one of those ideologies like Communism that looks great on paper but doesn’t take human nature into account so it tends to fail miserably when tried.
