Temporary Self-Imposed Exile

As a lefty blogger it’s bad enough that you have to read wretched rants from wingnuts, but when you start encountering fetid, nonsensical mewling on an hourly (or even minute-by-minute) basis from players on your own team it’s too much to process without going batshit crazy. I’m taking a break for a couple of days (I more or less started yesterday).  I don’t know how a newly-minted Democrat like John Cole doesn’t curl up in a ball and cry himself to sleep every night after surveying the landscape and seeing that he’s signed on with a contingent of self-defeating, irrational, barking-mad lunatics.

To all of the books and films I’ve neglected in favor of reading a steady stream of bug-eyed blogosphere bullshit, come to poppa.

I just re-watched How High. It holds up well and I highly recommend it.

Bob Dylan : lyric-driven rock :: Jesse Dylan : stoner comedy

Going Galt, are ye? In addition to books and films, a renewed focus on household pets can be restorative.

You’ve earned it. Crank up some good music, kick back, cuddle the spouse and the cat and get yourself back into a good place.

Never even heard of that film.  I’ll have to look it up. My list of neglected films is pretty endless at this point, which is why I need a break from reading crap (including the comments) like this and this (and those are just two of many examples).

Cenk’s ego is so big you’d almost think he’d accomplished something.

Jeebus, it takes me back to the old Naderite Usenet groups.

The road to hell is paved with people whose opinions I respect agreeing with the Firebaggers.

Can’t fool me, Kevin. I know you are really just saving all your energy to root for the Jets this Sunday. :-)

Well if your version of going galt is like John Cole’s I shall expect three new posts up before lunchtime.  He said he was going galt before he broke his shoulder and he’s been more prolific than ever even typing one handed.

Can’t fool me, Kevin. I know you are really just saving all your energy to root for the Jets this Sunday. :-)

My shining beacon of hope. As an added bonus, it’s on at the same time as UConn’s game, so I don’t have to watch that. If I have to suffer through another loss from them I’ll hurl myself in front of a bus.

Heh.  I had visited that talkleft thread for some reason just yesterday.  Haven’t been there in months, but for some reason I clicked on a blogroll link.

BIG MISTAKE!  Those people have lost it.  I just find it so interesting how many people seem to enjoy going through life perpetually outraged.  Find somewhere small where you can make a difference and get to it.  That’s what makes you feel better.

Anyway, I agree with the break.  We all need to do that from time to time.  Just come back snarkier than ever.

The voice of inexperience:

Most of the Tea Bagging rank and file probably agree with us on taxation when it is explained to them.

Oh yes! And most of them probably agree with us on the universal brotherhood of man when we leave out black people.

Enjoy your vacation, Kevin. “Exile” doesn’t quite cover it.

I feel like a fortune cookie: It is a good time to recharge your batteries, doing what you have put off.

So, I read this article, which got me interested in the book Lost City of Z. Which, I’ll mention, is a Kindle book.

It’s like a non-fiction adventure novel, I can’t put it down. So, that’s my recharge the batteries recommendation.

If you haven’t already, give Fear And Loathing On The Campaign Trail ‘72 a read.

Don’t apologize for taking a time-out. Most of my heroes turn out to be weaklings, eventually.

AltHippo, that was a great article! I’ve got the book on order, too. Found the link at Boing Boing, where I’ve been spending more time, as I have been here and at Sadly No. (hope I’m not intruding…) It’s gotten so silly out there, I might as well read the amusing people rather than just point and laugh at the unintentionally funny doom and gloomers. Too depressing after a while!

I guess I need to turn off my Echofon Firefox Twitter add-on so I don’t see stuff like this.

So. Fucking. Retarded.

*HEAD EXPLOSION*

Time out is good. Between the opportunist PUMA/PUMAoids, genuinely aggrieved but currently aimless, and downright ratfuckers, I think there are scads of people bloviating online right now who’d be far better stepping back and away from the keyboard for a little to get some perspective. I feel like a rubbernecker (no offense, big guy) at an outbreak of ergotism. One could point and laugh, but that just risks adding to the hysteria to no good effect.

Myself, I’ve been more or less speechless online for a month or so. It’s a luxury because all the co-bloggers and commenters here do such a sterling job of filtering sense and humor out of the hubbub that it’s fun/illuminating just to read for a while without getting sucked too far into the madness.

I just find it so interesting how many people seem to enjoy going through life perpetually outraged.  Find somewhere small where you can make a difference and get to it.  That’s what makes you feel better.

This, as they say. I’ve hung around in and with lefty groups over here for years. A proportion feel that perpetual outrage is the only true mark of the radical, and anyone who’s got a cooler take on matters is a sellout etc., if not The Ultimate Enemy. Challenging such people to actually figure out how to do something constructive about their complaints is just about the only way to get them to STFU.

How bad is it getting? I’m ready to start reading theater blogs again, for god’s sake! I’m re-reading Studs Terkel’s Hard Times to cheer myself up!

And yeah, these people who want to make common cause with the teabaggers? I give them this challenge—show up at the next teabagger event carrying a big sign proclaiming

Single-Payer Universal Healthcare NOW!

C’mon, Cenk, show us what a tough fightin’ man you are. Be sure to post the pictures of yourself with the “OBAMACARE” Witch Doctor sign broken upon your pate.

Don’t just talk the talk in your safe widdle online womb, kiddies! Walk the walk!

Anyway: I just got Bamboozled from Netflix, a film I’ve been curious about for years but somehow have never seen. Will let you know what I think.

Since America’s team, the Bears, didn’t make the playoffs I am filling my time reading a history of salt and planning a road trip camping down the Pacific Coast Highway.

And there’s that pesky job stuff too.

Kevin, I know you have a very long movie queue but I would highly recommend watching The Bad News Bears (the original from 76 of course). It’s not just a movie it is a time capsule. Then maybe follow it up with Watchmen to see the grown up Kelly Leak as Rorschach.  Actually, skip Watchmen and just watch The Bad News Bears like 12 times.  Think of it as a palette cleanser.

The road to hell is paved with the opinions of people I respect using terms like “firebaggers”.

Sure willf. It’s the nasty labels those mean know-it-all liberals make up that are ruining this country.

You’re not alone!  I’m so depressed by the high school bullshit being played out—I hated high school!
