The Hand Wringing Continues

Jeebus, now the wingnuts are bleating that the Chrysler dealerships being closed were being politically targeted by the Obamabot thugs because they donated money to the Republicans in the past and not to the Democrat Fascistosocialists.  92% of political contributions made by dealerships marked for closure was given to Republicans therefore this MUST be a partisan spanking!

Only one problem with that theory says Nate Silver:

Overall, 88 percent of the contributions from [all] car dealers went to Republican candidates and just 12 percent to Democratic candidates. By comparison, the list of dealers on Doug Ross’s list (which I haven’t vetted, but I assume is fine) gave 92 percent of their money to Republicans—not really a significant difference.

There’s no conspiracy here, folks—just some bad math.

He then goes on to point out that it’s no mystery car dealers tend to be Republican.  Most of them are older white males who are relatively affluent and live in the suburbs.  Duh.

Meanwhile via No More Mister Nice Blog, Rushbo has compared conservatives today to an “oppressed minority”, relegated to sit at the back of the bus.  O.M.G.

Chrysler is an “old white-guy” car, which is why Obama is hammering them into the ground.

In contrast, the Black President has taken a controlling interest in Cadillac.

Plain as fucking day.

Imagine the wailing when they start closing down Buick dealerships

I notice all the wingers are being rather cagey about the donation breakdown for the dealerships that weren’t bagged. I get the distinct impression that no one has run the numbers on the retained dealerships, because they already have the numbers the want.

Doug Ross, who instigated the controversy, links to this doc which purports to be a comprehensive list of all dealerships and donations, with an invitation to “take a deeper dive” if you care to do the comparative legwork he’d rather you didn’t. Unfortunately, the list is huge and doesn’t break out the winners and losers, so he’s probably pretty confident that no one will bother to perform the due diligence he should have.

Also, beware of anecdotal “evidence” from unhappy dealers and their attorneys, who are trying to lay the foundation for a big-cash-lottery lawsuit.

If ever a civil rights movement was needed in America, it is for the Republican Party. If ever we needed to start marching for freedom and constitutional rights, it’s for the Republican Party.

So sayeth a man who, in his lifetime, has never been denied so much as a snack cake.

As Jon Stewart so eloquently put it, “You’re confusing ‘tyranny’ with ‘losing.’”

Update: Both lists (retained and released dealerships) appear to be linked on this page as PDFs.

I’m on dialup, so it may take a while to snag the Winners List, but I’ll try to do a side-by-side once I have it to see if the unpurged dealers tranched cash to the Obama campaign.

Oh please oh please oh please!

Sure, we all know that at the last minute Jabba teh Rush will present a doctor’s note excusing him from anything more strenous than popping a pill, but it would still be hi-larious.

(Did ya notice that I totally refrained from making cracks about Klan rallies? I’m classy that way.)

Thank God we have a man (or bloated simulacrum formed from Crisco and oxycodone) who understands, and can burp and fart so eloquently on the struggle of rich white men in America.  Free at last, free at last, thank Reagan Almighty we’re free at last.

I look forward to Rush’s Rosa Parks moment, when he refuses to surrender his bus seat to a Negro, because, well, he’s stuck.

You win an internet, sir.
