The Kobayashi Maru Scenario*

Not since Cadet James Tiberius Kirk pwned his Starfleet instructors by gaming the simulated “no-win scenario” in his favor has a seemingly doomed participant avoided a humiliating exposure of incompetence as cleverly as Governor Palin did last night.

It truly was a no-win situation for Palin: As she’s amply demonstrated over the past several weeks, she doesn’t know jackshit about national affairs, foreign policy or McCain’s position on key issues. She also can’t respond coherently to basic questions.  So how could she avoid a train wreck? By ignoring the questions and delivering talking points and attacks instead. And she pretty much pulled it off.

Damn, I wish such a strategy had occurred to me back when I was in college. Instead of studying for exams in dreary subjects like algebra, I could have just ignored the test questions and submitted an essay on the use of allegories as a foreshadowing device in Wuthering Heights instead. That would have showed those pointy-headed, elitist mathematics professors and their boring old numbers.

Except I would have flunked out. Luckily for Palin, debates aren’t scored objectively, and apparently, responding to the actual questions isn’t a requirement. Folksiness counts. So she did okay.

According to the snap polls I’ve seen, most viewers thought Biden won the debate. But the consensus is that Palin didn’t screw up. My sense at this point is that Palin avoided disaster but didn’t change the trajectory of the race. She made the wingnuts happy again and failed to move the center.

And it looks like the McCain campaign plans to call that good enough—Palin’s line about the mainstream media indicates to me that she’s going to finish out the remnants of the race by sticking to wingnut informercials like the Hannity and Hewitt “interviews.”

I don’t see how Palin’s preaching to the choir helps McCain pick up the independents he has to have to win the presidency.  But apparently avoiding a Palin implosion is good enough for McCain. And that has to be considered a win for Obama-Biden.

Woohoo! 1,000 Nerd Points for me! I’m psyched.

Btw, I don’t disagree with what you said, Betty, but consider the tremendous disadvantage Palin was working with last night. I mean, could you have stood for 90 minutes and fielded tough question in four-inch stilettos? Let’s give the girl some props! As Billy Crystal’s Fernando would have said, it’s not what you say but how you look. And dahling, she looked mahvelous.

Good point, J. I wouldn’t have made it to the podium in heels even half that high—I’m like a cat on stilts in anything but flats.

Was anyone else absolutely terrified when Biden teared up? It was understandable given the subject, he recovered nicely, and I think it was rightly perceived as a humanizing moment. But for a couple of seconds there, I was scared shitless he would lose it.

Yay, I get nerd points!

Can I cash them them in for real actual popularity?

Biden blew Palin away among independents in this snap poll.

1000 nerd points for me too, what does that say about this site?

I’m glad someone finally called out McCain on his “maverickyness” too.  Biden was good enough, neither one made any serious gaffes like Dole did in the ‘76 VP debate. His “democrat wars” gaffe is classic!

And I knew the reference, but only because I worked on this a million years ago.

OMG I’m a big nerd too!

I loved it when Joe choked up.  The only thing he could have done that would have topped that moment was when Sarah said his teacher wife would “get her reward in Heaven.”

I wish Biden had responded, “My first wife and my daughter are already in Heaven getting their reward, and I don’t think teachers should have to die horrible deaths to be rewarded for their work.”

Was anyone else absolutely terrified when Biden teared up? It was understandable given the subject, he recovered nicely, and I think it was rightly perceived as a humanizing moment. But for a couple of seconds there, I was scared shitless he would lose it.

Yeah, I was worried but I teared up a little too when he talked about that.  And reeled with amazement when Palin didn’t say one word to acknowledge it - just charged into talking about energy or something.  Either a) she was paying so little attention to what he was saying, just thinking of what she would say next, that it blew right past her or b) she is incapable of empathy and has never considered what it would be like to lose a child.  I don’t even want to go to the place where she wouldn’t care if she did - I just hope she’s not that plastic (or the PP as discussed a few weeks ago).  Overall I’d give her a C+ for effort but continued to feel she didn’t really have any depth of understanding of the issues she was discussing.  BTW, ABC is reporting one big gaffe of Palin’s misstating McCain’s position on homeowner mortgage work-outs. Or, as on ANWR drilling, maybe just being more mavericky than the maverick in taking an opposing position.  Or, most likely, it just sailed over her head and she didn’t know what she said.  (Have to admit it got past me.)

OMG, Allan, that would have been a big booyah moment fer sure!

Marindenver, I thought Palin’s non-reaction to Biden’s tearing up was kind of stunning too. I can’t remember exactly what subject she glommed onto next, but the chirpy tone was definitely jarring. I think she was just waiting for him to stop speaking so she could cross the next talking point off the list; I don’t think she even heard him. In a way, I was relieved. It moved Biden past a painful subject and didn’t reflect well on Palin.

Wait . . . did Gillian Anderson name her daughter “Piper Maru” in part as an homage to “Star Trek?”

Whoa!

Also, Palin’s lack of empathy really astonished me. Except not really, because I long ago learned that Republicans have all the feelings in the world—for themselves. Anyone else just doesn’t matter. Didn’t we learn that from Katrina?

Was anyone else absolutely terrified when Biden teared up?

Yes!  I sat here and moaned, “noooooo!”.  I don’t know what that says about me….I felt bad the minute i did it.

oh and I get the nerd points, too.  Jeez, Cracks, we need to get together.

The Sarah Palin Debate Flow Chart illustrates where her head was those 90 minutes.

I get no nerd points, prolly because as a kid I abhorred anything remotely related to sci-fi and Star Trek.

But doggone it, I gonna learn me some Star Trek trivia so’s I can keeps hanging wit yiz.

Bravo Allan! GREAT point.

However, Palin DID react to Biden’s choking up and speech. When the camera panned on her, she was teared up. I’m not defending her, but both the spouse and I saw it. There were definitely tears in her eyes and her voice was a bit shaky there for a minute. I just don’t think she knew the enemy had feelings and didn’t know how to react.

Wow, J, I totally missed Palin tearing up! It’s possible I had my head buried in my hands for a second there, as consumed with anxiety as I was for Biden. Will have to review that tape. But I do recall her moving on to a new talking point without verbally acknowledging it. Maybe the charitable interpretation is that she feared she’d get too emotional.

I am a Democrat, and I am so ashamed at the insults, fabrication, lies and misinformation that continue with the Obama Supporters.  They have no respect for fellow Democrats and no respect for themselves.  They are so filthy, and I believe this is coming from the leadership of Obama, I will not be able to vote for him.  I have had enough of smear, lies and misinformation.  I am not going to vote for another poser in the Whitehouse.  Obama has absolutely no experience in foreign relations, executive, or the ecomony.  Liars think they can go far, not this time with me.

They have no respect for fellow Democrats

No dipshit, we have no respect for you. There’s a big diff4erence between willfully-stupid dipshits such as yourself and Democrats.

So here’s one for the road, have a coke and a smile and shut the fuck up.

Yo Sandi, if you’re gonna chide others for engaging in “insults, fabrications, lies and misinformation,” it helps not to insult, fabricate, misinform and lie about your audience when delivering your tirade.

Adding points to support your view rather than indulging in scatter-shot hysteria and Olympic-caliber conclusion-leaping might help as well. In other words, COMMENT FAIL.

PS: What Humboldt said.

Wow! Sandi-who-dots-her-i-with-a-heart is using the GOP-approved ratfuck magnetic fridge poetry kit!  What’s a matter, Troll?  Did one of your 50 cats get ahold of the “uppity” ERRRRRR “elite” tile?  Yeah, you’re a Democrat and I’m a Juilliard trained ballerina.  Enjoy your asswhuppin’ come November.  I’ll be right here to teabag you on the 5th. Now, excuse me while I execute a port de bras...

I’ll be right here to teabag you on the 5th. Now, excuse me while I execute a port de bras…

Can you really do both things simultaneously?

However, Palin DID react to Biden’s choking up and speech. When the camera panned on her, she was teared up.

J. I think you’re pulling our legs but I’ll look at the tape too when I get home.

Lady P. that Sarah Palin debate chart is hysterical.  I wish we’d had it before to follow along!

Sandi, the Republican liars have apparently gone all the way with you.

Oh, my. I think I may have encouraged Sandi by linking here at AOL.

If I did, my sincerest apologies.

I think Sandi has drunk too many six packs.

I wonder how the Carl Cameron´s slobbing of Palin is going to play with the media.  With everyday she begins to move closer to Bush/Cheney bubble status.

Barack should wait until the McCain starts throwning the slim and call him on the townhalls…I´m just happy the geezer isn´t using the damn townhall as his multi-excuse this month.
