The last word at the Inauguration goes to Rev. Joseph Lowery

As upset as some of us are about Rick Warren, it’s a pity that everyone’s forgetting that, as terry from positively Barack noted in the comments down below, “the last word at the Inauguration goes to Rev. Joseph Lowery.” Here he is speaking at Coretta Scott King’s funeral in 2006.

Terry’s got more on Lowery here.

I truly wish that everyone who is angry over Warren would do some research on Lowery. I’ve met Lowery on several occasions and he is just a wonderful guy,he never failed to take time for me when he came into the store I worked for. Perhaps Obama wants people to compare and contrast the two? Maybe?

From DL last night, the number 1 issue was the Rick Warren business, and folks were pissed.  That Lowery was giving the benediction didn’t compensate for Warren.  And, I think most folks here will agree that Warren is a freakasaurus.

The one thing that seemed to cheer people up was that the folks at NRO were still very upset.  Surfing over there this morning I saw this: (NRO)

Defenders of marriage shouldn’t be conned by President-elect Obama’s selection of evangelical pastor Rick Warren to deliver the invocation at the inauguration. Although Obama claims to be against same-sex marriage, his opposition to California’s Proposition 8—which overturned the California supreme court’s invention of a state constitutional right to same-sex marriage—shows that he is content to acquiesce in judicial imposition of same-sex marriage. Further, it’s a safe bet that Obama’s appointees to the Supreme Court will support the invention of a federal constitutional right to same-sex marriage.

As a general rule, any situation where NRO is wailing and gnashing their teeth is good news for progressives.

AltHippo, the fact that the evangelical right is just as or even more upset by the Warren selection was the tipping point for me.  I still wish he hadn’t picked Warren, for all the obvious reasons, but I love me some pissed off right wingers.  The more they alienate themselves in their bat shit crazy universe the better off the rest of the world is. Plus Lowery seems like a cool dude.

I still say there’s a 99% probability Obama will use this to pants the TalEvan.

There’s also a 50% change pRick will be arrested for public indecency in Larry Craig’s favorite stall at Union Station.

I was actually hoping Jeremiah Wright would get up and say “God Damn America!” right after Obama was sworn in, just to piss off the right wing!

I think we’d all be better off not paying attention to what that sector of the right thinks anymore.  it’s wasted energy, we know they are a day late and a dollars short on too many issues to name.  I am of the belief that Obama was not trying to curry favor with evangelicals, he is simply trying to pluck-off yet another rational thinking majority of a subgroup to OUR side.

And what better way to do that…really people?

This is just Rick Warren, a widely known figure, being grabbed by the ear and being put right on the fire.  He will be tamed, he will apologize, in a sense house-trained.  Essentially he is just the conduit which pe-Obama wants in his place to allow the rest of the non-crazies to assimilate and contribute.  We need this misguided souls.

And we also really need to keep the heat on the Scarborough’s of the media…not by simply complaining but applying forward moving alternatives to these MIS-issues.  Seriously Mika is a lost soul and needs our help, we would do better than to beat her passive ass over the head daily with talking points…hell edit-down for her in her own passive-type-deferential lingo.  Do not be afraid of the term “talking points” because Fox made a mockery of it…hell rename whatever you want.

Ambitious sort like Morning Joseph are dictating the entire day, and the dark side knows this…follow that with another misguided fool in Noron, and you get us talking about, “why’d Obama do this?”

Meaning the onus on this story should have always been on Warren, like; “are you going to apologize to gays”...which is how I’m guessing the Obama communications team thought the narrative would go.  Like they thought the wire-tapped bashing of Obama by Blago would stand by itself as reason why there was no back door dealing between the two factions.

in short, separate the crap meant as right wing obstacles for BO from true forward-thinking feet to fire issues we want the incoming admin to tackle and respect.

Okay, that -is- more like it.  Wow.  That’s…I’ll tune in for that speech, at least.  I expect that that’s more where Obama’s real beliefs lie; I just hope it’s a lot more reflected in his policies than, well, the Rick Warren faction.

As for why he invited Warren: I think he was basically being a politician, because, surprise, that’s what he is.  Maybe he thinks he can get Warren to piss outside the tent instead of in, but…wevs.

I did some archive surfing and noticed that there was already a fair bit of grumbling at Warren for being too soft on the ‘mos—something about a meeting with Soulforce, which Warren then swore he had -not- agreed to, did not support their homosexualist agenda, and he wouldn’t be welcoming them.

And then World Nut Daily was screaming about Warren inviting Obama (the pro this inauguration invite is quidding for): you know, Obama is Satan.  What can this mean?!  Warren is VERY SUSPICIOUS, NOW.

It’ll be interesting to watch him continue to maneuver that.  I suspect…yeah, thing is, he can’t tip too far outside his current message, especially wrt Teh Gay, Warren, even if he wants to (I see no reason to believe he does, much, but admittedly I haven’t been following his trajectory closely), or his base will eat him.  He has to answer to constituents at least as much as a (secular) politician, after all.  I suspect if he does end up finding himself getting it too hard from both ends, he will not thank Obama for it.  Who the fuck knows, though.

Anyway, it’s lovely to speculate that Obama wanted Warren to “apologize to gays,” much less that any such apology might be forthcoming, but I’m not exactly holding my breath.  Look, I still like the guy, but it doesn’t mean I can’t also hold a fair amount of cynicism about him: at the end of the day he’s just this politician, you know?

Well, I do share your breath-holding sentiments, I feel like the script has already been written.  This is a with us or against us senario, and speech-wise I would dare say there is some wiggle-room…but the sheer size and energy of the crowd is a factor none of us can calculate.  Or their reaction…I´ll just say I´m gonna bring my popcorn…my representative has yet to get back to me on my tickets…I´m definitely not holding my breath on that one as I submitted over a month ago.

I was actually hoping Jeremiah Wright would get up and say “God Damn America!” right after Obama was sworn in, just to piss off the right wing!
