The Obama camp takes McCain/Palin to obedience school

The Obama’s camp’s quickfire (and shrewdly back-pocketed) response to Sarah Palin’s desperate William Ayers smear this weekend was one of the all-time great rolled-up-newspaper-to-the-nose political responses in modern American history. Axelrod and crew got it goin’ on.

I pointed out that Obama surely had a closer connection to the Rev. Jeremiah Wright than to Ayers — and so, I asked, if Ayers is a legitimate issue, what about Reverend Wright?

[Sarah Palin] didn’t hesitate: “To tell you the truth, Bill, I don’t know why that association isn’t discussed more, because those were appalling things that that pastor had said about our great country, and to have sat in the pews for 20 years and listened to that — with, I don’t know, a sense of condoning it, I guess, because he didn’t get up and leave — to me, that does say something about character. But, you know, I guess that would be a John McCain call on whether he wants to bring that up.”

Bring it. Thwaaaaap!

UPDATE: As Betty Cracker reminded me in comments, here’s another reason why Palin might not want to talk about Rev. Wright.

And let’s not forget those nutty Jews for Jesus types you mentioned awhile back who told Palin and her church (while she was there, unlike Obama during Wright’s “goddamn America rant”) that terrorism in Israel is God’s judgment on Jews for their “disbelief.” Why didn’t Palin walk out? Why does she hate Israel so much?

And why is she married to a former secessionist, and why was she telling the anti-American group to “keep up the good work” as recently as this year and in her capacity as governor?

The McCain campaign is going to pull out all the sleazy stops between now and November 4. They have nothing else. But they are heaving stones from glass houses, and it looks like the Obama campaign isn’t going to make the mistake Kerry made. Good for them.

Here’s another issue to hit McCain and Palin with. Culture of life my ass.

The McCain campaign is going to pull out all the sleazy stops between now and November 4. They have nothing else.

Even Scarborough, who was trying desperately this morning to defend Palin’s use of Ayers, admitted it wouldn’t end up working for them. The only thing that worries me is that Chucky T pointed out this bullshit could play well for them in PA, but also noted that there are several states in play for Obama that normally go red.

Culture of life my ass.

Morse, I may be wrong, but not sure how much of a negative that will be with the indie/undecided voters.  Tina Fey threw it out this weekend, so it’s guaranteed to get a lot more attention, though. We’ll see.

No doubt those attacks will be aimed squarely at portions of swing states like Ohio and PA—Bitterville? But there are a couple of problems for McCain, aside from the fact that he and Palin have many more questionable associates than Obama.

For one thing, McCain is on record—video, even, I think—admitting that Rev. Wright is not a fair issue with which to attack Obama. Don’t remember exactly when he said it—probably when Hillary Clinton was using Wright against Obama, to make him (McCain) look like a reasonable, above-it-all non-partisan. At any rate, he’s on record disavowing Wright attacks, contra Palin.

I guess Palin is serving as McCain’s sockpuppet on the Wright issue since McCain said it wasn’t a valid issue back in the day. But if the campaign or one of their shady outside groups launch a Wright attack ad, the Obama team’s response is already in the can—featuring McCain’s own words.

The 2nd reason I don’t see this working out for them is that everybody knows about Wright already. Even people who weren’t paying that much attention during the primaries heard about it, so it’s old news. The Ayers and Rezko connections didn’t receive the wall-to-wall attention the Wright tie did, but they are much more tenuous.

On the other hand, Muthee and the Jews for Jesus loons have yet to make a prime-time debut on the world stage. This could totally blow up in McCain’s face.

There is no greater demonstration of the Republican team’s contempt for the voters than their vow to “turn the page on the economy,” which is the most important thing to voters in this country.  That’s just the latest demonstration that McCain doesn’t mind insulting our collective intelligence.

McCain and Palin, along with the rest of the Republican Party, are completely bereft of ideas on how to fix the economy because their intention is to do the same things GW Bush and company have been doing the last 8 years.  So, they are trying to use the same kind of fear-mongering that has worked before.

What makes this whole thing even more ridiculous is that both of them are throwing rocks when they live in glass houses.  They have taken “guilt by association” to a level of almost unprecedented absurdity.  The association with Ayers is tenuous—they might as well blame even the Republicans who are part of the Chicago political scene for brushing shoulders with Ayers.

Rezko only sold Obama a house, long before he was ever indicted.  And Jeremiah Wright is totally irrelevant since Obama denounced him.  He received a lot of death threats after his performance here in D.C, so he is one scared old man.

What about Todd Palin’s membership in the Alaska Independent Party, which wants to secede from the United States?  Think about Palin having a religious nut from Kenya laying hands on her, someone who is proud of persecuting a defenseless woman in his own country because he thought she was a “witch.”  The laying of hands on Palin was supposed to protect her from witchcraft.

And let’s not even get started on McCain, who treated his first wife like trash after she waited for him more than 5 years, raising their kids alone and being badly injured and disfigured in an auto accident.  Think about his embrace of people like Jerry Falwell and Hagee, whom he once called agents of intolerance.  Just today, his brother Joe referred to Northern Virginia supporters of Obama as “communists.”

They realize they are losing on the issues, so they have to revert and resort to the kind of tactics that characterize what I think of as one of the ugliest presidential campaigns in recent history. I hope, and believe, that they will receive the trouncing in the election that they so richly deserve.
