The Sarah Palin Hype Cycle

The stages are:

1. Event trigger
2. Peak of inflated expectations
3. Trough of disillusionment
4. Brand collapse

The good news is that the peak of inflated expectations (we’re almost there) is followed by the trough of disillusionment.  As the McCain campaign pushes the Sarah Palin mythology, the story gradually falls apart. Reports about abuse of power, cronyism, political religiosity, lies, and corruption trump the initial infatuation and imagery that captured Americana. Once the peak of the hype cycle is reached, it’s all downhill, straight into the trough for the cowardly pitbull. From there, the collapse of the brand is inevitable.

I’ll try to plot the events along the hype-cycle curve over the coming days. Roasters, feel free to weigh in with any suggested plot points.

I think she peaked out yesterday.  Today, I heard members of the media displaying outright disgust at how they got sucked into the whole lipstick thing.  I suspect McCain and Palin won’t get the benefit of the doubt next time.

Plus, Palin has yet to face the press, and ignore any talk that she can dodge them forever.  Wait till the first guy shows up in a chicken suit, holding a sign that says “Palin fears the press”.  She’s going to have to handle a press conference and soon, and if she doesn’t do well, her favorability ratings are going to tank.

Next week, the moderates get over their fawning and move back into the undecided camp, and the national polls will go back to 48/44 Obama by next Friday.

And let me add one thing:  I’m 37 and I’ve been a GDI my entire adult life.  2004 was the first time I voted for a major candidate, and it was a protest vote against Bush.  I’ve been in the tank for Obama since December ‘06, but the squirming and hand wringing that comes from many Democrats when things get a little tough just makes me sick.

the squirming and hand wringing that comes from many Democrats when things get a little tough just makes me sick.

I agree. The poised and collected way that Obama responded to the lipstick crap is convincing. I think she’ll get more bounce from the Gibson puff piece biopic, but eventually Obama’s political skill and smarts will drive her into the trough. Palin is no Hillary!

I’m one Democrat who aint-a-panicking. There is no reason to. We still have a massive budget deficit, hundreds of thousands of Americans have been scammed out of their homes and we continue to wage an immoral, uncessary war in the Middle East.

Fuck Palin, fuck her welfare state, fuck her husband and fuck her family. She’s going to fold like a cheap tent in a moderate Humboldt breeze.

You can only get so far by being a lying sack of shit.

that is gold HumboldtBlue, solid gold.

Check out Stephanie Cutter on MSNBC ripping the McMoose campaign a new one.  She is good and I hope we see her every day until Nov. 4th. (link takes you to HuffPo)

And one more thing. The McCain surrogates were on teevee today saying that Obama referred to McCain as a stinky old fish. This is completely false. Obama was talking about Palin’s crotch. Really. Next time you’re around a female pitbull, take a whiff. Ewww.

I dunno if the GOP faithful will give up, it’s one rule for them, one for the rest of the plebs (example: unwed mother having it on while her mother has no clue).

On a board I’m at…this was the defense for McCain saying the lipstick/pig thing to Hillary:

“yes…but it was a different circumstance. There is a saying to that effect. He was calling her healthcare plan.

When Obama used it (judging from the reaction of the crowd) it was more of a jab at Palin because of her pitbull/hockey mom joke at the convention. While McCain wasn’t referencing Hillary personally, its obvious that Obama WAS referencing Palin. That IS disgraceful.”

See Obama didn’t have to even mention Palin’s name (unless McCain is Palin in disguise then yes he did).  There’s no getting through to people like that.

And I might add (didn’t think of this before)...if Obama is referencing Palin then surely Palin was referencing Hillary (seeing as Macca started it).

I did reply to it but it’s 50 bazillion words long (so I won’t copy) and I’m sure the person I was answering doesn’t have that kind of attention span.  I should’ve prefaced it with a “HOTTEST VP” pin and me in my underwear or something.

The election has now officially gone beyond astoundingly ridiculous thanks to ringmaster McCain and his giant ego.

Dear ‘roasters’ - just to gently point out the 4th stage of the Hype Cycle is more usually ‘the plateau of productivity’. You have the first three stages right. We are unsure whether this analytical approach, developed from observations of technology and business trends, applies to politics - but its interesting to see someone try it out.

Just points on the cycle itself - apolitical on the subject matter here.

all the best - Mark

An honor to have you stop by, Mark. For the record, the adapted curve above roughly worked to predict the collapse of Howard Dean’s campaign in 2004. Not saying it will with Sarah Palin, but since her brand is built on inflated hype, I suspect we might well see the same thing, though maybe not as pronounced as with Dean.

As to the slope of enlightenment and plateau of productivity, they aren’t really operable if the subject technology is a sham, right? When there is no real product behind the hype, it seems to me the collapse of the product or brand is the only thing that can follow the trough of disillusionment.

Again, thanks for stopping by.

To add one more aspect to Mark’s (a colleague of mine) comment above:

...just to gently point out the 4th stage of the Hype Cycle is more usually ‘the plateau of productivity’.

The Hype Cycle also provisions for an entry to be “obsolete before plateau”. And I believe that Palin squarely falls into that category.

Andy, are you saying she’ll be “obsolete before plateau” because she and McCain will lose the election?

Let’s hope the time line is something less than two months.

Let’s hope the time line is something less than two months.

This is precisely the challenge. Obama has to push the media to deconstruct the Palin hype, and he has to debunk it directly himself, all with the intent of pushing Palin out of the hype-cycle peak and into the trough of disillusionment. The media will not do it on their own.

The McCain campaign, on the other hand, will work like dogs to keep Palin a mystery icon, to hide her away from scrutiny so that any real deconstruction is delayed until after the election. In that way, the disillusionment comes after they take office. Bush-Cheney successfully did this twice to get elected, only to later disappoint (or should I say disillusion) the entire world.

Everyone see the interview yet?

I was right.  She peaked out yesterday, and now that everyone’s has a chance to see how she handles questions from the press, the moderates and independents are going to start jumping off the wagon in a hurry.

Next Friday, it will be back to 48-44 Obama nationwide.

She was horrible, and gotta hand it to Gibson, he set her up with the Bush doctrine question and made her look like a, well, uh, like a hockey mom pretending she could someday be president. Really, really pathetic.

Someplace near the peak and just before the downward plunge comes the stage:

Takes up semi-permanent residency on the cover of National Enquirer.

Oh look, she’s already there!

Ok guys and gals….lets give the Palin topic a break.  The more you feed it, the larger it will become.  McCain is the one we need to talk about in detail…and it’s up to us (yes, US!) to get this campaign on the right track!

McCain is the REAL problem…Palin is an afterthought….

Feel free to email me…I’m on a mission in Phoenix, AZ, which isn’t easy!!

OK Laura .... fuck off.

As an Obama supporter I can tell you that watching Stephanie Cutter makes me sick!!!! Her relentless Whining and sniveling is hurting Obama in my opinion. She comes across as a rabid dog when she is confronted on any issue. For god’s sake, I thought you were a lawyer? What happened to your debating skills? Someone please hide her in a closet before the rabid dog bits, causes irreversible damage.
