The “U” word

Add this to the list of things I didn’t see coming:

Iowa – Iowa’s Supreme Court unanimously struck down the state’s gay marriage ban on Friday, making Iowa the third state where same-sex couples can tie the knot.

Perhaps more when my head stops spinning.

Update:

Maybe I shouldn’t be so completely gobsmacked:

Barack Obama and Mike Huckabee have claimed victories in Iowa’s first-in-the-nation caucuses.

With all Democratic precincts reporting, Obama had the support of 38 percent of voters, compared to 30 percent for John Edwards and 29 percent for Hillary Clinton.

Still, it’s fairly frickin’ stunning and the fact it was unanimous makes it more so. Also from Kevin’s post:

“Equal protection under the Iowa Constitution is essentially a direction that all persons similarly situated should be treated alike. Since territorial times, Iowa has given meaning to this constitutional provision, striking blows to slavery and segregation, and recognizing women’s rights. The court found the issue of same-sex marriage comes to it with the same importance as the landmark cases of the past.”

They get it, they really get it.

Yes, I’m babbling.

Go, Iowa!  Go, Iowa Supreme Court! And now, cue wingnutter groups to immediately push a version of Prop 8 on Iowa’s next ballot in 3. . 2. .

But to have a unanimous decision and focus on the equal protection clause of the Constitution is great.  The momentum continues to build.  I want to grab everyone’s hands and sing a rousing chorus of “We Shall Overcome”!  And that is NOT snark.

That’s the only conclusion possible when homosexuals are acknowledged to be full citizens! Of course, now Iowa gays will have to stop taking the life/liberty/happiness exemption discount off their state tax.

The best news is, to get a constitutional amendment on the Iowa ballot, it has to pass in TWO successive legislative sessions.  And the Democrats control the legislature and have no intention of allowing such a bill to come to a vote this session.  This is not going away anytime soon…

Are you listening CA Supreme Court?  Will you have the courage to uphold the rationale by which you overturned our ban last year now that another state has ruled similarly?

Wait….when did Iowa move to one of the coasts?

As a native Iowan I can let y’all in on a small secret: most folks there are decent, thoughtful and well educated. The south end of the state, not so much. There’s a joke that if you added southern Iowa to Missouri you’d increase both state’s average IQs.

I suspect the usual noisy pushback will be from a rather small minority. It’s just hard to imagine the Lutherans are going to be terribly up in arms about this (even the Missouri Synod).

Now that I’m in California it’s amusing to compare and contrast with Iowa. All I can say is the nutballs here are well enough organized and funded to frequently get their way versus a poorly focused majority. That said, I can’t wait to see this in person:

Hey trollhattan, I live in Folsom.  I might be going to their little teabagging party to point, laugh, and collect pictures of ungrammatical and misspelled signs.

Bravo, Iowa!

I am in Iowa (Eastern) and didn’t even know/hear of this lawsuit or pending SC decision til today.  I find it amusing that in Darragh’s PUMAland on today’s thread there has only been passing mention of this awesome decision. D’ya suppose they hate Iowa given our ‘crowning’ of Obama in the caucuses?  Any of you sockpuppeting over there care to bring that up?  Many of them are out lesbians, so wondering where the celebration is.  Also, something that just struck me today… If Hillary was doing exactly as Obama is policy-wise, I’d bet they’d applaud her every move.  They would have had a similar cabinet, yes?

It’s a no-brainer.

Down here in TX, we’ll be trying to drink oil while praising Jesus. Up north they’ll be sittin’ in rubble, skinning rats by the barrel fire and passing around Bukowski, Burroughs and appropriate ‘pre-economic collape’ literature.

While IOWA is border to border bed and breakfast, Justice of the Peace, the whole goddamm state will be an audacious, yet tasteful, mix of earthtones and subtle but flirtacious pastels.

It ain’t Nevada, remember it takes the better part of a week to get a marriage liscense in real states, that’s a tourist trade, and the dykes will be leaving motorcycle oilstains on the sidewalks faster than the wine and cheese merchant fellows can soak ‘em up with sourdough baggettes.

It’ll be festive, and happy, and devil may care and…..

what’s the word I’m looking for?

No offense to Iowans, but I heard about the county court official who started allowing any pair of adults to marry a couple of years ago and assumed he’d be dead in a matter of days.

No offense to Iowans, really. You all grow some awesome judges out there.
